View Full Version : Methode used to sink a lot of ships

Hi guys,

I will describe here the most acurate method (in my opinion) that i use to sink ships in sh5.

Note: You must to have installed:

1) MO or new UIs by TDW
2) Manos scope

Lets start - we have in our periscope sight a ship:

1) lock the target
2) identify the target
3) put your vertical line of the scope in the front of the target and start the clock (cronometer)
4) stop the clock when the ship just pased your vertical line of the periscope

Open the SOAN and check the lenght of the ship: we supose the lenght of the ship is 149 metters and the clock show us 19 sec

We aplie the math: speed of the ship = lenght of the ship/time*1.94

speed = 149/19*1.94=15.21 knots - we will consider 15 knots

This is an acurate method to find the speed! (in my opinion) - for best result i recommand a distance around 3000 meters and an angle not to far from 90 degrees (20 degree less or more) - if not maybe you will mistake around 0.5 knots:hmmm:

so, untill now we know the speed = 15 knots

5) use the stadimeter and find the distance from the ship.

we supouse that we have distance=3000 metters

6) now we will find the AOB using a methode called ,,AOB aproaces zero'' - wich is the most acurate metode to find the AOB of a ship.

AOB=degrees(asin(ARobserved/ARreference))

AR= aspect ratio

How this is working:

ARreference= lenght of the ship/mast hight of the ship

6.1) Open the SOAN and find the ARreference

We supose that we have lenght of the ship = 149 and mast hight of the ship 49,66 (i know that is to big but is just an example:D)

ARreference = lenght of the ship/mast height of the ship

ARreference = 149/49.66=3

6.2) open RAOFB and find ARobserved

ARobserved=number of lenghts marks/numbers of height marks (no need to convert)

Using ,,manos scope,, we will have an acurate reading of RAOFB

We supose that we count on horizontal line 12 marks (that is the number of lenght marks) and on the vertical 3 marks (that is the number of height marks)

ARobserved=12/3=4

Normaly now we must to calculate the formula:
AOB=degrees(asin(ARobserved/ARreference))

but now he comes the tricky thing:

We use the AOB SLIDE RULLER (i have a printable jpeg image and in 2 seconds we find the most acurate AOB of the target).

Here is the AOB slide ruller:http://www.filefront.com/17868255/AOB approaches zero.bmp

So, untill now we have

ARreference=3
ARobeserved=4

AOB=ARreference *100/ARobserved=3*100/4=75

We read where is 75 on the AOB SLIDE RULLER and we find an
AOB=49 degrees

If the ship is heading to us then AOB=49 degrees
if the ship is going away we have an AOB= 49+90=139 degrees

So we have now all the data we need:

speed = 15 knots
distance=3000 metters
AOB=49 degrees

6) Put all the data in TDC and fire torpedo.

Have fun:woot:

Note: that method is used for playing in an area close to 100% realism

Note: all that i have writted here it is not my original ideea. I readed from all of these things on the internet and books and i puted all togheter in 1 pack.
Note: when TDW will use the toniloCoyote work in his MO, this method will become more acurate and we will have then a small number of ,,mised torpedos''
Note: thanks to TDW and Manos for theirs wonderful work!

Best regards!:salute:

P.S. I also know a method (i used 2 monts ago when i was playing at 40% realism) to hit almost all the target at a distance of 6000 meters - in few seconds - but it is like cheating.

If you mean the bmp, then it is accurate. You could also print a table of sinus:

Overall the method you propose is fast and accurate.

Thanks!

I know that is acurate the bmp. - what i meant is to play with ,,map contact update - on'', use RAOFB and bmp to determine the AOB and then compare with the real one (find the real one by drawing an angle from the target cource - then the target - and the Uboat - on the map). How close is from the ,,real AOB,,?

Thanks for the table of sinus - i did not had that!:up:

I added a "tell me range and AOB" script. You can use it to test your slide:up:

I also tried added the slide to the front cover of TDWs SOAN. It did not work.
I have no idea why.

Good summary Stoianm, but if I can add a few additional pointers:

1) lock the target
2) identify the target
3) put your vertical line of the scope in the front of the target and start the clock (cronometer)
4) stop the clock when the ship just pased your vertical line of the periscope

As you point out, this method is only really accurate if the target is at an AOB of around 90 degrees to your sub. The rest of the time, it will not give you an accurate speed reading.

Another method which is independent of AOB is the map plot method, namely:

1) determine Range, Bearing, plot on TAI/NAV map(Mark #1);
2) run chrono for a fixed time period;
3) determine Range, Bearing, plot on TAI/NAV map(Mark #2);
4) draw a line from Mark #1 to Mark #2, measure distance with ruler.

You can then determine speed with the following formula:

-distance measured on map x (factor to convert to distance travelled over an hour, for example if you ran chrono for 1 min, you would multiply by 60) divided by 1852;or

-if you run the chrono for 3min 15 seconds, you can just drop the last 2 digits from the distance measured to get the speed in knots.

5) use the stadimeter and find the distance from the ship.

we supouse that we have distance=3000 metters

If you have one of the realistic periscope mods (I use Arclight's mod), you can also measure range by eye as follows:

1) identify target and determine mast height;
2) measure mast height in number of Horizontal Bars on the scope;

you can then measure the range based on a formula, for example with Arclight's MRP, the formula is:

1.5x - MastHeight x 100 / horizontal bars = Range

6x - MastHeight x 400 / horizontal bars = Range

for example, a Liberty Ship has a mast height of 27.1 meters, if the measured height is 4 bars at 6x, the range would be 2,710 meters.

i.e. 27.1 x 400= 10,840 divided by 4= 2,710 meters.

How this is working:

ARreference= lenght of the ship/mast hight of the ship

if you using the map plot method, you will also have the accurate course of the target on the map. You can then easily determine the AOB by using the protactor to measure it.

You now have Range, Bearing, Speed and AOB which can plug into the TDC. Best of all, you just need the scope, map and a calculator.

I know this method ( i think i readed in Wazoo's Manual ploting). You are right there are not related to AOB but with the one that i described i had an area of wron calculation aroun 0.5 knot when the AOB was far away from 90 degree - so, not so big deal (with the one that you described i had almoust the same area of wrong calculation) - i use this one because is fastes.:up:

I know ,,manual targeting by Hitaman''.
We use now the ,,manos scope'' (tested also the arlight scope - manos had more acurate readings). Almoust the same thing like you find in Hitmans posts you can find in Trevally tutorials but he use the real RAOFB - very good tutorial.

Thanks for your advice: anyway like i said this method is not my ideea - i tested so many methods and i chosed one that worked better for me.
All the other advices are very wellcomed!:up:

P.S. (if you are interested i can tell you how you can make to have displayed on your tai/nav map the real cource of a target when you put your scope on the ship - but this is like cheating:D)

Hi Mate !

P.S. My 1000th Post.....

Congrats on 1000 posts, friend. I'm downloading the Tactics Manual now.

Seems to me if a ship is 3000m away at a 90 track, going 15 knots, you can kiss it goodbye!

I'm looking for a good method, cause I'm getting more with the cannon than the torpedoes. I can't figure the TDC out. That damned XO panel is right in the middle of my scope and I can't see the target. So I get rid of TDC and miss most of the time.

I haven't got SH5, but is there a rev/speed chart available here.
This method was used by both sides, and it's a simple matter of ship(engine) ID and prop rev count = approx speed. A 3 torp spread is usually more than enough.

I've nailed a ship at about 3-4K in visibility conditions of 50m, rain sleet and snow. This was definitely the luckiest shot.. but a good amount of calcs and obervations went into the aiming.
:)

stoianm How to use RAOFB with Real navigation and Manual TDC in SH5

1)How to use RAOFB to find course, AOB, range etc from a ship or convoy with real navigation and realism 100%
2)How to choose the best position before making the final attack on a ship or convoy using Real navigation
3)How to add all the data in the TDC and how and when to fire your torpedoes
4)How to use AOB slide ruller to find AOB
5)How to use Navigator abilities to calculate the speed of a ship
5)This methode is the most fast and acurate methode that i tested so far in SH5 using Real nav, Manual TDC and Realism 100%
6)The time that we need to find all the data (range, course, AOB, and speed) for a ship or a convoy it takes less than 2 minutes
6)In this methode we will do less ploting on the map and we will use more visuals methodes

To play in this manner you need to have installed this mods:

1)NewUIs_TDC_6_4_0_ByTheDarkWraith or Magnum Opus

2)NewUIs_TDC_6_4_0_Real_Navigation

3)AOB slide ruller for TDW UIs and MO by stoianm ===>> DOWNLOAD (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=3106)

AOB=(Aro/Arr)*100===>> read value in AOB slide ruller

Arr = horizontal marks/vertical marks (use RAOFB to obtain the marks - i recomand Manos scopes from TDW UIs)

Aro = Ship Lenght/Ship mast (use the SOAN to find these values)

If the ship is heading to your direction than AOB = value from AOB slide ruller
If the ship is heading away to your direction than AOB = value from AOB slide ruller + 90 degrees

I also recomand for those wich like to play realistic to use the sobers settings from mai.cfg filles (C:\Users\Administrator\Documents\SH5\data\cfg)

You can change with these settings:

TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=1,32
CriticalDamage=1,32
CrewEfficiency=256
AirEnemyDetected=1,32
SoundEffects=8
CharacterAnim=32
FriendDetected=1,32
EnemyDetected=1,32
RadioReport=1,32
Particles=32
PrayState=1,32
HunterState=1,32
3DRender=32
Maximum=256,32

When you patroling an area do not use TC travel mode and put TC1 for each message in box message as i did in game... it is very important

Ok. Thanks.

I also noticed you have the same "animation sutter" problem that I have Towards the end of your second video on GPU care, when your sub is leaving the pen, you can see the deck water splashing over the side at a much slower rate than the rest of the framerate. It even stops moving completely at times. This is the same damn problem I have. The only way I've been able to fix it is to alt-tab out, open task manager and change the sh5.exe priority to realtime. This fixes the problem but is a pain to do every time I play.

Thanks for getting so involved in the process sto! Your tutorials are really good too!

But I'm going to call it now, I've got dibs on the comedic "Subsim mods Silent Hunter 5" video.:D I've been wanting to make this for awhile, so I'd better get on it before someone beats me to it!

Personally I think its going to be hilarious.

Its a bit of a rip-off of the "das boot plays silent hunter 4" movies made awhile ago. "Dynamic weather fronts my ass! Its been raining for a month now!" Soo funny. But alas, since no one's grabbed at the chance to make one for SH5, i'm going to :arrgh!:

Hey Stoi,

I watched these TDC tutorials again. (I'm still having a hard time getting used to the uboat after playing US Fleetboats so much :doh:). Anyway, I notice in all your tutorials and many others' that you always attack at 90 degrees to teh target track. Is this because the AOB dial will not persist. I see how it makes it easier to make last minute adjustments to AOB when you are at 90 degrees. That is the advantage of Fast 90 Attack / Dick O'Kane methods. Are we stuck with 90 degree attacks until the AOB persistence bug is fixed?

Also, can you not be moving when entering TDC solutions? Sometimes the tactical situation calls for my sub to be moving and not at 90 degrees so I'm trying to figure out how forgiving/adaptable the uboat TDC is for those situations.

By the way, I saw the first part of the Das Boot movie. Very well done. Looking forward to the rest. :yeah:

I made 90 fast because 2 aspects:

1) in 90 degree angle you have a little space for errors (like range for example)
2) because of the AOB wich is reset... but in the tutorial tat i shoot ships in same row i used to relate the AOB at periscope bering... and i put myself in 90 degrees because only in this case you can relate AOB ai scope bearing

i do not know a ploting solution that can be made while you are moving... the only one is the new 4 bearing methode but this one is for hydro only... and you can shoot if you want from your position that you made the ploting... but you need to move fast... find speed first... than take range and take AOB last and shoot ... the time interval between range - AOB - and FIRE torpedo must be max 2-3 seconds if you want to not have problems... but you can use another methode... the one that you can put data in tdc and waith the victim to be in that spoot... not need to be at 90 degrees... i will make an tutorial for that:D

stoianm Let's learn to use RAOFB wheel in SH5 video tutorial

1)How to use attack periscope to find course, AOB, range etc from an ship or convoy with the help of RAOFB wheel

2)How to learn to play SH5 with the help of TDW interface using tutorials

I readed that in WWII the submariners used often the RAOFB wheel to find all the data and put in the Manual TDC - so this is a very immersive method.

Now at this moment of the SH5 modding we can use this RAOFB wheel in our SH5 and we will have accurate results

To play like this you need to install:

1) TDW UI mod version 6.4 - he had in his interface the RAOFB wheel and you can play tutorials using the automations - also he use in his interface the real ship dimensions to have acurate results in game

2) The manos scope mod - i recomand this mod because is very acurate and the RAOFB marks are very acurate also... the mod is in the TDW UI mod version 6.4 - just install the patch related at your monitor resolution

3) Trevally tutorials - you need this mod to learn a lot of methods and also to learn to use the RAOFB wheel - is very helpful because you can learn in same time plaing the game .. and he will help you with explanations and he will guide you step by step... excelent tutorial mod

1)How to use attack periscope to find course, AOB, range etc from an ship or convoy with the help of RAOFB wheel

2)How toput you youboat in the best position before making the final attack

This is the most immersive method in SH5 and i think that all players that like to play realistic should use the RAOFB wheel to find the needed data for Manual TDC - this RAOFB wheel and the attack disck were the only tools used in the WWII by submariner... so if you want to be a good Uboat Captain you should to be able to easy use the RAOFB wheel

stoianm How to use the U-Jagd Chrono in SH5 video tutorial

1)How to use the U-Jagd Chrono in SH5 to find the speed of a ship

2)How the U-Jagd Chrono in SH5 to find the estimation torpedo time impact

This is the most immersive and fast method in SH5 to find a target speed

To play like this you need to install:

1) NewUIs_TDC_6_5_1_ByTheDarkWraith

2) NewUIs_TDC_6_5_0_U-Jagd_Chrono

This chrono was used by the german submariners in WWII and i think is a very useful and immersive tool

stoianm How to use only the RAOFB whell with Real nav and Realism 100% in SH5 video tutorial

1)How to use attack periscope to find course, AOB, range etc from an ship or convoy with the help of RAOFB wheel

2)How toput you youboat in the best position before making the final attack

Thanks Stoianm for this tutorial :up:, I would like to make a side note:
This tutorial was based in observations using zoom scope at 6, but If you use x1.5 zoom:
a) The vertical reading ( in this video 4.2 ) must be align with the black bottom right wedge and not the top black wedge.
b) The horizontal reading ( in this video 15.8 ) must be multiplied by 4 before used in the inside part of the middle ring ( 6x divided by 1.5x = 4)
c) Any “mark one eyeball, or the time she takes to cross the vertical line” calculation of target’s speed, in order to get fairly accurate values, our AOB (the bearing to our submarine from the targeted ship) must be between 60 and 120 degrees.
By now, probably all players already know this but… :03:

In same example i explained how you must to do if you use scope zoom at 1.5 - watch again the video and you will see it... about the speed calculation with vertical line if you use u-jagd chrono ... the angle can be between 15 - 175 ... i tested and i had very acurate speed readings

I will see them again :) its always a pleasure.

About the angle, I remember that values fom one old thread from Karamazov, but, quoting Karamazov`s KiUB User Guide "I usually calculate the speed when the target is at 45/315 degrees and, if she’s slow enough". But if you say you tested it at 15 - 175 I believe it.

Btw, I read that RAOBF weels at Manos scopes, and TDW UI are not accurate and are not giving the correct values for range and AOB! Is that true :hmmm: ?

Stoianm, are you going to release a video tutorial about attack disk? Come on mate ... :03:

it's only true if you don't use the correct scope patch for your screen aspect ratio.

The TDW interface with the Manos Scope i used in all my video tutorials... see them and you will see i never miss a target... the problem is that they are too acurate:DL... and as tdw said is very important to use the corect scope mod patch for your rate in game... i will go back at tutorials soon when i will have some free time
btw... where you readed this?

EDIT: I made a misteake... i tested between 15 and 165 degrees and i had very acurate readings using U_jagd chrono.... if the AOB is between 0 and 15 or between 165 and 180 you must to start the crono in front of ship and stop the crono in the middle... but i did not had all the time the corect speed readind results... so i take the speed of a ship only between 15 and 165 degrees... see this tutorial from here: 26) How to use the U-Jags Chrono in SH5 ==> Link (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1655674&postcount=54)

A bit off topic perhaps but just a note on the importance of the Manos Scopes -

I can't use Manos scopes - so I am stucking using the regular periscopes when using RAOFB method - which i generally use if I come upon a ship that I havent been able to track with hydrophones using the regular 4 bearing method - or to check my speed and aob calculations - or in a convoy that I have already attacked and all the ships have started evasive manuevers. Even with the stock periscopes I usally find the method very useful and fairly accurate.

However -where i think it does make a difference is where that extra bit of accuracy is required - at long range or if the ship is heading away from you and the AOB is a negative figure. I almost always miss in this situation - as someone said earlier you can basically kissi it goodbye if its at this solution and at 15 knots or greater.

Anyway - Im just trying to make the point that the RAOFB method can certainly be used without Manos scopes (and generally used very effectively if you are careful) - but yes it seems to me that its not 100 per cent accurate - for all the times folks talk about the game being too easy and not realistic enough I think this actually adds an extra dimension of immersion - surely it wasnt as easy as it is in game to target ships (even at 100 percent realism as I play)??

Why can't you use manos scopes? :06:

Stoianm, I really appreciate your SH5 Youtube videos. I've watched a lot of them and I'm working through more of them to get better at SH5.

However, in the one quoted below, as well in the text, I believe you have a couple of mistakes.

1. In the first formula for AOB you have Aro/Arr when you should have Arr/Aro.

The ratio Arr = horizontal marks/vertical marks will always be smaller than or equal to (if on the target's beam) Aro = Ship Length/Ship mast so you need to use the ratio Arr/Aro.

2. If the contact is heading away from you, its AOB is:

AOB = 180 degrees - value from AOB slide ruller

That's because the ratio you calculate is the sine of the AOB:

sine AOB = Arr / Aro = sine (180 degress - AOB)

These are called supplementary angles (they add together to equal 180 degrees and their sines are equal).

The AOB is either the arcsine (inverse sine function return values from -90 to +90 degrees) of the ratio Aro/Arr (if approaching) or its supplementary angle (if moving away):

AOB = arcsine (Arr / Aro) [approaching]

AOB = 180 degrees - arcsine (Arr / Aro) [moving away]

where your slide rule takes the ratio as a percentage and gives the arcsine.

stoianm How to use RAOFB with Real navigation and Manual TDC in SH5

1)How to use RAOFB to find course, AOB, range etc from a ship or convoy with real navigation and realism 100%
2)How to choose the best position before making the final attack on a ship or convoy using Real navigation
3)How to add all the data in the TDC and how and when to fire your torpedoes
4)How to use AOB slide ruller to find AOB
5)How to use Navigator abilities to calculate the speed of a ship
5)This methode is the most fast and acurate methode that i tested so far in SH5 using Real nav, Manual TDCand Realism 100%

Iam sure that the painstaking method of AOB and getting your data is boring .. It takes to Much time to track your target witout consistant accuracie .. did our U boat kaluens feel the same ?

nope... this is a game to play long time and i love realism.. i play when i have time and i do not get bored... even is data is no so acurate i reduce some erors because i hunt all time fast 90 degree and around 1 km distance... i do not have manny misssing torps... like in real life:03:

Maybe try to download these vids? By YTD YouTube Downloader & Converter http://www.youtubedownloadersite.com/ After that you can watch and even convert flv files to avi.
Strange I saw this video (Poland) and I really don't know what is the reason. Some stupid restrictions :nope:

It's only a guess, but is the Nazi flag displayed in the video? Prehaps in the bunker or as the sub's flag? I believe it's forbidden in present day Germany.

I tought that was a reason too - but no. In this vids stoianm showed JSGME and the desktop. There is no any signs. Have a look on the thumbnail at the bottom (8:49).

Most of the various tutorials that I can access here on SUBSIM have pictures which seem not to show in the area inside the frame where the picture should be as all black, i.e., no picture. These excellent tutorials are less than helpful without their accompanying images.

I've talked to the chief engineer of my boat but he hasn't a clue as to what to do.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the pictures back in the tutorials?

Thanks,
Quink
