View Full Version : Blizzard/Activision pissed off about a mod...
...for being too good? Well, that's what the maker of the Starcraft 2 mod called 'World of Starcraft' thinks.
Can you believe this man? They put out a tool to let us do anything and then shut us down when we get too good with it?

The name "World of Starcraft" is actually owned by Blizzard so, might be more than an idea. :nope:

Er from what I gathered as this unfolded that's the point: copyright infringement of the name. It's nothing about quality of the mod or something like that.
In a statement released to all sorts of places last night, they confirmed they’re not going to block the mod’s ongoing development.http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/01/21/blizzard-offers-mmo-modder-mercy/
Ah, thanks Arc, didn't do much of an research on it. :O:

Well the guy does deserve credit for getting Activison all up in arms over a bloody youtube video.
I mean, they could have sent him a letter asking for a name-change on the project, instead of cracking open a tin of lawyers and threatening the poor bugger with all kinds of lawsuits. :-?
Weee bit of a knee-jerk reaction there (or just a jerky reaction).
Aye, true that. Well, atleast the modder got a possible job.

Good on Riot for offering, not sure he accepted though. :hmmm:
Aye, haven't accepted it yet AFAIK.
Seems I forgot some words from my last post, I shall blame the now non-existent hangover for it. :O:

You have it easy: always a hangover to blame. :O:
Julia did the trick I take it?
Julia did the trick I take it?
:yep:
Wait so some guy (Or team of guys) goes out of their way and devotes their time to improving the longevity of your game, possibly making it funner and possibly even causing some to buy your game and you repay him/them by shutting the mod down :hmmm:

Actually, the guy making it choose a name that was just asking for trouble (clear copyright infringement) and got slapped with lawsuits, which were dismissed shortly after the situation was cleared up. The mod is continuing development under a new title, and Riot Games (League of Legends) offered the guy a job.
Oh, and it was a preview-trailer posted on YT that triggered it, the mod itself came under discusion a bit later on, to make sure it was dependant on SC2 rather than a stand-alone product (if it was standalone, it would be more copyright infringement, considering the art resources used and the lore it builds upon).
tl;dr: No.

Yes its a good name just the timing was wrong. World of Warcraft, World of Starcraft of course blizzard/activision are going retarded all over it. Its got copyrights written all over it. Thumbs up to the guy who made the mod, just change the name.
Besides there have been a few mods for WoW over the years some so good that Blizzard copied them into their game just made a few adjustments so its not an exact copy but the similarities are there. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same with WoS mod. :shifty:
