So their servers are down, AGAIN. Can't log on to play my game. Do their tech support drown in their coffee? Have they no back-up servers for just this event?

"Guess who died on the bus today..doodah doodah!!"... Ahem, whoops... err hello!!!.
Would somebody like to film the backroom scenes in UBI's server room in moments like these.. I'd really like to see the panic and pain they've caused themselves.

This gets me thinking what a realy 'bad business model' that this is, that UBI adopted.
First of all, people who see UBI as opposition (and there probably many), would encourage/turn a blind eye to attacks on UBI DRM servers.
UBI, to save money, has probably extended their IT employees duties to include the DRM servers. This could be streching their staff capabilities which will result in resignations, resulting further in lower expertise... and more DRM server downtime.
With the final result is that nobody will touch DRM games/servers. Once again UBI has shot themselves in both feet.
They seem to be going in the right direction of making games more moddable, but 1 step forward, and with DRM 2 steps backward. The pirates don't have to do a thing except sit back and watch the circus.

Everything would have been fine, had Ubi done this:

Everything would have been fine, had Ubi done this:or if...
Install game with first time online authentication
Then for each DLC I buy/download - like a new sub, new ships, towns, landscapes, vehicles, planes and what not - I gladly authenticate again.
Like Microsoft do with Windows and other programs....
SHV is a story of missed opportunities... imho...

Yeah. Truthfully I think they had the right idea with SH5 conceptually (RPG + Sim in an effort to grab a larger audience - only way this genre was going to survive IMO), but they lowballed it with (im assuming) a limited budget, really short development and QA time, and then saddled it with a DRM scheme that made PC gamers the world over angry. So what could brought sub sim's back into the public mainstream, instead put the final nail in the coffin.
Just my opinion.

I see it the opposite way. Sky posted an interview with a group of sim devs on GT a few weeks ago, and they remained committed to producing quality simulations. I also think that the simulation community remains enthusiastic. Just look at the buzz around a potential new sim from SCS; and what would likely be a hardcore sim.
Where I think SHV went wrong was essentially the watering down of the sim elements to accomodate the gamey-er RPG elements. The result was a product that neither casual gamers nor hardcore simmers were happy with.
Of course, as you said, the DRM didn't help either.

Where I think SHV went wrong was essentially the watering down of the sim elements...Nah, that's easy to live with. Only a matter of patching or/and some creative modding... :D
I would have bought it pre-released and in several copies, but couldn't with the DRM method chosen...

Agreed, the idea could have been good, but it was poorly implemented.
Thankfully, there are now many mods available to carve out the RPG elements, while keeping all the SH5 specific innovations. I still have a SH4+RFB+RSRDC instal, but with all the great work TDW and the other modders are doing, I now feel like I am downgrading when I fire up SH4.
Btw, I had no problem logging on to launch the game yesterday or today. :arrgh!:

Not really. I could be mistaken, but aside from a few changes , I don't think the sim elements are any different then in Sh4. (Attack, evasion, operating the sub, shooting torpedos, etc) They are however, buried, and not on the games veneer. What is on the games veneer, is the graphics and RPG elements.
Personally, i would have preferred they expanded on the sim elements, but they really haven't done that since SH4 with the inclusion of thermal layers.
edit:
What i find funny though is this rejection of the RPG elements by several folks. It's funny to me, because if you peruse the SH3 forums for any length of time, there's plenty of role playing that goes on there. You'd think they'd love it. I mean seriously, for alot of people, its all about das boot. You can' tell me this game isn't trying to deliver that.

I would have also like to have seen something done about the acoustics. It remains a ridiculously simplified model that operates at any speed and in any sea state, let alone the modeling of things like convergence zones.

You're right there. I was speaking more for myself. I never really thought of it that way, although deep down I really 'knew' that. People wanted Das Boot in video game form. It's all that a lot of people talk about; likely most of the community. So, yes, I guess that the devs were really giving the people what they wanted after all.
I'd never really thought about it that way.

Yay! Why does that ALWAYS have to happen on my day off duty?
*Is grumpy now* I'm grumpy too! This was the day that I planned to finish my new sound mod update, but no! I had no issues with DRM before this but now... Offline for a half and hour, ok, not being to play the game for 8 hours, not ok!

Well, that's the price we pay for being stupid enough to buy games with DRM's like this ;)

Now there are no ETA on when they come back online. Way to go ubi!:damn:

Happy to be SHIV player :D:D Well, mainly because my comp can't run SHV... :nope:
My opinion may be pretty rough but..
Only thing that they win with the DRM (or however it's called) is ~3 months without illegal and/or cracked copies of the game going around the internet. People who want to crack games and publish them have just a bit harder bean to bite but it isn't impossible. I bet that you can find working cracked Assassins Creed 2 from some site even if it uses DRM too.
SHIV + U-boot expansion perhaps? :D Cheaper and surely works without internet :yeah:
BTW, about "Everything's down at Ubisoft", when their registration site has been online last time?? I've been trying to register there to play SHIV multiplayer like 3 months but no luck.. :o

Oh well , just think of all the new ideas TDW would have thought up while not modding SH5 .
So I finally bought this game after so long wait!
And this is the first thing I encounter!
LoL!
Just tried to start SH5.... no go, server still down at 6:33pm. What a revoltin development this is! :nope:

Suppose this is a good time as any to play some SH3 GWX, I kinda missed puttering about in a little type IIA.
Plus...it runs like a dream on my new system.
I just hope they get this fixed tonight so I can continue my campaign tomarrow.

After reading threads here and figuring that SH5 was finally worth a shot I downloaded it... and cant even setup an Ubisoft account to play the game I just bought... Classic

Call me Captain Obvious if you you want, or even Major Smartass if you like, but you shouldn't have had to wait to play a legitimately purchased single player game to begin with.
If you own the CD, and it's installed on your machine, there is no excuse for not being able to play it, whenever you feel like it. Regardless of what the status is of your ISP, it's upstream provider, whatever major backbone you cross, back down to ubi's upstream provider, ISP, and to ubi's servers.
Ofcourse I agree with that, I mean I never had any trouble with GTA IV. Even though the whole concept is a total disaster.

I'll admit. I bought this game solely because of screenshots I saw on another forum...could almost taste the salt in the air....definitely gorgeous, but the game is not all I had hoped to be...
