TOKYO – Toyota is recalling nearly 1.7 million vehicles around the world for various defects that may cause fuel leakage — the latest in quality control woes for the Japanese automaker.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it was recalling a wide range of models, including the IS and GS Lexus luxury models in North America and the Avensis sedan and station wagon models in Europe.

Yes, 139 different recalls last year, 6 were Toyota/Lexus.

Been driving my 2000 Camry for eight years. @195K miles, no problems. Total maintenance beyond normal usage: @US$1200, not counting body work from a deer strike.

Wife's been driving a 2002 Echo for seven years. @100K, no problems. Total maintenance cost (beyond normal oil, tires, wiper blades) @US$800.

I trust the brand. I trust the repairs. I base this trust on my experience with the cars. Your mileage may vary.

Toyota's been at the top of the game for a long time; it was inevitable that something would fail to live up to high (and wholly justified) global expectations for the brand. Whoever's next at the top of the heap will have the same thing happen. Nobody's stays number One all the time. They had a good run. They've made some mistakes. And I will probably buy from them again, regardless of recent recall drama being played out in the press.
