What other great free / open source games are out there?
I've found Free Falcon 5 (http://www.freefalcon.com/forum/forum.php) (nd old favorite of mine)
And that transportation game that was mentioned in the screen shot thread. Complicated as heck.
Any other good ones out there?
On a very restricted budget, and just rebuilt my machine, so I'm looking for new toys to go with it.

Well, let's see...
There are three different versions of Steel Panthers (Steel Panthers: World at War by Matrix Games, WinSPWW2 and WinSPMBT by The Camo Workshop) out there which are all free.
There's a very good remake of the original Panzer General and Allied General (With the Kaiser General and K.u.K. General mods thrown in) called Panzer General Forever which is also free.
That's all I can think of for now.
EDIT: Oh, right, MechWarrior 4 came out for free a while ago as well.

Now why didn't i know about this?
Thanks for letting me know this is around, Raptor1
I played PG and Allied religiously on PS1, then on the PC with PS1 emulator.
Here is the link for PG Forever:

I used to run YSFlight on my work PC, it's a basic flight sim - not in the league of FlightGear, but still good fun, and quite a lot of add-on stuff for it, and an easy(-ish) map creator. Best of all it doesn't need a great deal of CPU or GPU power - hence had it at work (I sit alone in a large office most of the time...), and better than stock FSX it has weapons! :yeah:

There is also Orbiter 2010:

It's a free space sim, with tons of add-ons. Have yet to actually play it myself, but interested in trying out the Apollo and Vostok add ons.

I'm running a great WW2 game entirely by email. No software. No cost.
Check the url address in the sig below.
Download the rules and see if it appeals.

If you like space dogfighting there's the FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project (http://hard-light.net/). If you've just built a new computer it should look beautiful, lots of mods you can try out too.
Also, MekTek (mektek.net) just released a new version of their Mekpak for MW4.
Just 2 free/open source games I play alot.

Ehh... let me say, rebuilt. HDD Raid 5 complete failure... just upgraded to a 3 x 1tb Raid 5 (1.85 tb total). But it's a decent machine... I'll give it a try.

Ah, well, if you have a decent graphics card you should be fine. TBH there's not all that much that'll put a strain, I was able to play up until the last couple of graphical updates :yep:

Free full game - America's Army 3.
Though AA2 was far better imo. AA3 has improved graphics and larger maps but it just doesn't feel the same. My favorite maps in AA2 was Bridge crossing and Pipeline they are both in AA3 to those that know the maps. And AA3 is downloadable from Steam

Then you're trying the wrong things obviously, OTTD is excellent, Dwarf Fortress addicting, Orbiter spectacular and hard, Panzer General Forever is also excellent, so is Steel Beasts.
So...yeah, there's a few bad eggs out there but these days the freeware scene is booming, particularly in comparison to...say...five years ago.

"Anything fun costs at least 8 dollars."
That's quite accurate really, I bought GTA IV on a Steam sale for 8 Euro, which is not the same as a dollar but hey, the number was right!:D (and the game WAS fun!)
On the other hand, I bought Crysis Warhead at a similar sale for 2 (!) Euro...I soon realized why it was so cheap...didn't even finish it.
One wishes Steel Beasts was free... :O:
:damn: It was one or the other and I just had to pick the wrong name didn't I?
And yes, I wish Steel Beasts was free too...

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun is available as a free download now, IIRC.
And I do believe that one or two of the older Battlecruiser games are also freebies now, as well as Universal Combat. :hmmm:
If you can find it, Hardwar is a lot of fun. It's slipped further into the deep recesses of the net since I last looked around for it.

Oh right, original GTA, Hidden&Dangerous and Full Spectrum Warrior are free too.
Tried H&D and FSW in the past; FSW had rather horrible performance and H&D... can't remember, think I just had a disagreement with the controls. :hmmm:
