Monday I go back to school and begin my freshman year of college. I'm taking a course to get a A.A.S. degree in Visual Communications Technology (Graphic Arts/Printing). 64 credit hours in all, 15 this semester.

This semester I'm taking English, Math, Intro to 2D Graphics, Astronomy, and WWII History. Taking the Sci and His courses to try and pad my GPA my first year since I already know quite a bit about those subjects (very little of it from schooling HA!).

I just got my books Friday:
Victory at Stalingrad
Benito Mussolini: The First Fascist
Harlem at War: the Black experience of WWII (guess they have to appease the minorities...)
Major Problems in the History of WWII
The Cosmos: Astronomy in the new millennium (most expensive book I got; $119 used)
Enhanced InSite for Composition (a online thing for English instead of books)
A Survey of Mathematics with Applications
Student's Solutions Manual (for above)
(About $300 in all, paid for by a Pell Grant which also covers all my tuition etc this semester.)

Jeebus. The Pell grant covered less than half of my tuition when I was in. Still owe major dollars on student loans. Meh. :shifty:

I can't imagine why you would be majoring in Graphic Arts, TLAM. :O:

No electives in freelance intel? :-?

All kidding aside: Congratulations, TLAM. You hold a lot of promise with those skills of yours. :)

I notice Hotel and Restaurant Management on there, just curious what that entails Neal?
I'm in that 'game' and have been for years.
BTW, Congrats.
Edit: all the best, TLAM Strike

Jeebus, the Pell grant covered less than half of my tuition when I was in. Still owe major dollars on student loans. Meh. :shifty: I just did the math and at the end of the year I will have something like $600 left over in grant money, assuming that I don't get a NYS TAP award for my second semester (but I think I do) the first basically paid for my 1st semester's tuition. I guess that's an advantage of having such a low paying job.

I can't imagine why you would be majoring in Graphic Arts, TLAM. :O:

No electives in freelance intel? :-? There is some awesome stuff down the street at the Rochester Institute of Technology but I don't have the $15,000 a semester to pay for it. Plus I would need some kind of undergrad degree to start off there. :damn:

But if I did got to RIT I would no doubt sign up for the Computer Gaming Degree course.

All kidding aside: Congratulations, TLAM. You hold a lot of promise with those skills of yours. :) Thanks Krash!

Inserting in to photoshop now...

Oh and if you open a place in upstate NY and need a cook who is NYS Department of Health Certified (Level A) look me up. ;)

Have fun, study hard, and good luck! :salute: Thanks Frau! :shucks:

Feuer, aside from the core classes of English, history, govt, etc. the degree includes a broad array of studies, such as economics, hospitality law, HR, 16 hours of accounting and finance, business calculus, several culinary classes (I got to play with knives!), and a lot of business and management classes. Oh, and leadership, facilities & operations, and food safety (that got me ServSafe certified). I took 8 hours of Chemistry as my science. The one class that they seem to have overlooked, psychology as it relates to guest relations, that would really be nice.

The degree program is here. (http://www.hrm.uh.edu/ACADEMICS/Degree-Requirements/Undergraduate/)

Awesome! Good luck with that. =)

You may also want see how far the financial aid will take you, credit hour wise. Here in Frederick County (Maryland) they pay for 96 credit hours towars your A.A at a community college. Which basically means, I could take whatever I wanted as long as I finish the curriculum and get the degree with these 96 credits.

As for the text books, we try to either get used ones, older editions or 'International' editions. That cuts down the cost tremendously.

I want to study astrophysics in University, what do you think about astronomy? Yea its a Natural Science elective.

I imagine you would have to take intro to astronomy for an astrophysics degree. But that would depend on the school.

Awesome! Good luck with that. =)

CONGRATS in a big way, mate!! Good luck, stick to it, and if there's anything this non-traditional college sophomore can do to help, let me know; if I can help, I'll be happy to.

How was your first day in the new world? It was ok, I wrote a schedule out and mixed up the the titles for my two classes so I thought I was going to English when I was in my Math class, the time and rooms I wrote down were right so that worked out.

Tomorrow is the big day I got my intro to graphic arts class.

When I had my design classes, I found Hillman Curtis' book "MTIV" quite interesting. It is from 2002, so some chapter like webdesign are a bit outdated. However his process of thinking and looking for inspirations are quite good - and he is not an artsy-fartsy guy, the book is well written. The guy was inspired by WW2 propaganda posters when he was a kid - can't be a bad guy ;)
