Another thread got me thinking, so what were your favorite cars you owned in the past. I was driving in the late 70's, so muscle cars from the late 60's were still big. My first car was a 69 Olds Cutlass..paid $350 for it. Heater didn't work, so I defrosted it and warmed it up with a blowdryer every morning, mainly cause a cute girl rode to school with me.

My favorites were a 66 Charger, 69 Ford Torino..429 Cobra Jet, 69 Chevelle..wrecked it. and a 72 Charger, 440 mag, also total loss street racing.... Don't think I paid over 2K for any of them, course that was still some money.

My first car was my father's 1972 Ford Mustang (black). It was kind of a dog in the amount of work that it took in upkeep, but damn if it wasn't cool. I sold it to pay for grad school, which I regret doing. I love my little Civic now, but there are days that I long for the old Mustang.

My absolute favorite was my 1973 Buick Estate Wagon. Nine passenger Porche. Tank. Urban Assault Vehicle. 455 CID/4 barrel. Simply a kick butt car to have in my college days. She could carry a keg or two! :03:

Yes sir. I drove the car over 200 miles with a whining transmission. I found the filter in the tranny was clogged. Replaced same and new fluid. Whining gone and shifted like butter. Bullet proof! I used to take her to the drag strip. I dropped on some dual exhaust. Lots of fun. Made it from Baltimore Inner Harber to College Park MD in 30 minutes. That is normally a 60 minute drive. I was not driving. My college bud was. I said your ticket if you get pulled over. You see that car coming up in the rear view mirror, you move over fast! It was a real urban assault vehicle. Hummer ain't got nothing on it. Had the motor to back it up. The thing flew for such a tank.

1999 WS6 Trans Am, by far my favorite to date

5.7L LS1 V8 cranking out 320 HP

Took it to a track once, my best run out of three yielded a 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds with a quarter mile track time of 12.7 seconds... all stock, no mods.

I had to save money for several months in anticipation of getting new tires and still had to borrow a couple of hundred dollars. the car used the Goodyear Eagle F1 P275/40ZR17 tires which, at the time ran at a cost of about $320+ each after taxes and shop costs were applied... thats over $1,200 to change the freaking tires :o

probably wasnt the best buying decision ever, expensive car, and every dime i earned at the time went toward it (i was single and working every day).

eventually i sold it on ebay to pay for additional flight training which was needed for a higher rating than i held.

I miss the hell out of that ride.

as i have grown older... i require something more practical

the Nissan Frontier, probably my second favorite vehicle

My mother drove a 1990 Lincoln Town Car up until her death. You didn't feel a thing when you drove it; it was the most luxurious ride I have ever had. The major downsides were twofold: It was rear wheel drive, so it handled like crap in the snow, and it required a lot of work as it got older. I ended up selling it after she died.

I got pulled over for the infraction of not having a front license plate once.

called the court to set up an appearance date, and i was informed that if they received a photograph that showed a front license plate on the vehicle there would be a no need for an appearance and the ticket would be dismissed.

so...

1. I promptly took a picture of the front and rear of my car that evening.

2. I loaded up microsoft paint

3. I copied the license plate from the image of the back of the car

4. I pasted the license plate onto the front of the car

5. printed the resulting image and faxed it to the court

ticket dismissed!:har:

My coworker will not put the plate on the front of his either. Said he would prefer the ticket. Hates to have a tag on the front of his car. Truly though, the tag on the nose of the Firefird looks ugly.

GoldenRivet
01-20-11, 01:54 PM
not only that but if memory serves correctly, you have to get the dealer to order you a front license plate mounting kit.

this removes the flaming chicken emblem and replaces it with a little boxy frame you attach your license plate to.

I'm sure the cost of this kit is probably more than the cost of the ticket.

My most favorite car that I have ever owned was a turquoise 1973 Oldsmobile Toronado (http://encyclopedia.classicoldsmobile.com/toronado/73.html), purchased in early 2006 for 4,000$ USD from a guy in Missouri. Turns out, the original owner was a low-level mafia guy in Nevada during the 1970s who died in the 1980s. Anyway, it's a great and stylish car, still have it and it runs great. Not to mention, purchased for a great price. ;)

One of my favorite cars from back in the day was a beige 2000 Lincoln Navigator (http://www.edmunds.com/lincoln/navigator/2000/) purchased in late 1999 for 50,000$ USD. Great car all-around, but it broke down in late 2007 and was sold to a junk/scrap yard in mid-2010 for around 900 dollars. The only downside was bad gas mileage. This didn't matter in the late 1990s and early 2000s when fuel prices were low, but into the mid-to-late 2000s, as fuel prices rose, let's say the car burned a hole in one's wallet. :(

I'm currently looking to buy a mid-to-late 1970s Cadillac Eldorado right now, but with the economy being the way it is, it's been hard to find one at a low and reasonable price and in decent condition.

My dream cars that I would love to have for all time would be a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_Cutlass_Supreme#Second_generation:_1968 .E2.80.931972), and a 1996 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport (http://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/impala/1996/).

What a great thread! Nice to see so many great cars and first cars. Except for Steve's. His is totally lame. :DL

I jest, of course. My first car was some kind of blue Ford tractor, assuming that counts. I don't know how old it was, just that my grandfather used it for work at some point. It ceased to function long before I was old enough to work the gears. I'd post a picture but it would be a terrible waste of ones and zeros.

My next vehicle was a horse, and I am proud to say that I still own one today. It's a black and brown 93' Morgan. The grass mileage is terrible and it's a compact, but it handles superbly and the acceleration is great. Also, it's a total chick magnet. Well, not for me, but for guys chicks are attracted to.

My first real car was a 1979 Triumph Spitfire.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o264/charlie143james/Spitfire-1500.jpg

It was just like this one, but without the hood decal. I looked like an idiot driving it because the thing was really tiny and my head pushed up the convertible cover a bit, but nobody cared because it looked like a Porsche, and many people didn't know what it was. Also, it was very, very slow on the top end. These things have only a 4-cylinder engine (non-GT), they accerlerate quickly because they are light, but they have no guts. Also, they are designed impossibly poorly. Were it possible for an engine or drive system to be designed in such an awful way as to have the removal of any component require the removal of three others, I would swear that this car managed it.

First car, though in a worse state then shown in this pic when I got it (but with the same dull grey, hehe). Put a lot of work into. Back then I had a friend with a garage, which made the upkeep pretty easy. Sadly I had to sell it when I moved. But the heck, I was the star of every parking lot.

I don't have any memorable cars...I've only had three under my name since I got my license, two of those are the same model and make.
my first car was a 1993 Eagle Summit with a 5 speed standard. I made a point to get a standard shift car as my first.
This isn't MY car...mine was a darker grey in the body color but it was in about this same 'going-to-fall-apart-any-second' condition
http://www.reidonly.net/summit/images/P1050899.JPG
Then I drove a white 1992 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme SL for a while. it had a 3.1 liter V6, and one night I hit a patch of Black Ice and sideswiped a telephone pole less than 200 yards from my house. I held the hood and cried waiting for my dad to spot me out of the ditch. I'll admit that I loved that car.
I went back to the Eagle for a while, then, something incredible hhappened...I got anoter Olds. This one was better, a 1995 model with a 3.4 liter DOHC, in this shade of red. I tore apart the 1992 to fix everything on it. I've replaced the entire cooling system, fixed the drivers side door handle which broke off, the rear brakes corroded and I replaced them with the help of my dad. I replaced the starter by myself, the front struts were broken when we got it, we replaced those, dad and I. believe it or not it still drive it after I picked it up with 375,000 miles on the Odometer
http://www.specialtycarcompany.com/car_images/SPEC-SITE_7-4-06_092.jpg

EDIT: Forgot to add the irony...Right after I got the new Olds, I bought an air freshener for it. The name of the scent? Black Ice.

Followed by Ford Escort:

Found this one that looked exactly like mine, 72 SE, same black, top, wheels. I paid $1300.00 for mine in 79, this one is for sale for $26K....dang, I would almost make an offer to relive the moment in my old age. I'll never forget going down the road about 100mphs, came around a curve and a lady turned in front of me off a side road. I couldn't slow down, so had to pass, but another car was coming head on, turned off the road...woke up later upside down in the backyard of someone in our neighborhood. He said I rolled it several times...Other than banging my head, I walked home...bout 20 minutes later cops banging on the door.

Had a hard time hanging with some muscle cars first 1/4 mile, but after that....gone. Had 180 on the speedometer and I canned past that several times.
I've got wrecked photos of it somewhere I'll have to post, you'll see why I cried.

I used to have a 1973 Volve 164E. It had a 3 litre straight 6 engine that was wonderful. over 5,000 pounds of steel and this thing could scoot.

My other favourite car was the '87 Toyota FX-16. Let's put the MR2 engine in to a small hatch back and then stand back! It was actually a rather dangerous car as the powertrain could easily surpass the capability of the suspension. That thing was a true pocket-rocket! I did many really dumb things in my FX-16 :yep:

My pop had one of these.

Get me a 1979 one and then we'll talk. Until then, you're in the office, baby. ;)

I paid 500 bucks for mine in 1985, saw one on a used carlot late last year with a pricetag of 18 GRAND!

Cars that went for 300.00$ dollars twenty years ago are now going for 30,000$ dollars today. :o

A completely stock 1996 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport that cost 24,000$ in 1996 now costs 50,000$ dollars in 2011. :nope:

Theives, the whole lot of 'em (no pun intended). :O:

i loved the big 2 door fords, mainly the cougar but also the T-Birds in the 72-77 years

my car was a mint green 74 cougar with white interior, power bucket seats and center console with the oval peep windows in the back corners. i got it when it was 6 yrs old (garage kept) for $1,000 with 70,000 miles on it and put another 100,000 on it with only an occassional tuneup and new tires. :D

plus i got rear ended twice and both times i had no damage yet the other car needed a new front end. :O:

something about those solid boxed beam 1/4" thick steel bumpers made it as solid as a tank no matter what you hit. :hmmm:

i think it got like 12 miles per gallon but i cant remember :06:

My first car was one like this, a Ford Fiesta (1980 model) that my father was going to sell but decided to give it to me
http://static.cargurus.com/images/site/2009/09/08/11/09/1979_ford_fiesta-pic-8699712704554326350.jpeg
The second one was a Seat Ibiza (1995 model), a second-hand car that I enjoyed for 5 years (until a drunk man hit me on the driver side and I had to buy a new one. Nobody got injured on the accident, even though the other car was a 4x4)
http://coches.cozot.es/coches/es/2010/04/27/103406.jpg

After the accident I bought this beauty, a Fiat Stylo 16v (2002 model), my unique brand new car
http://www.carsplusplus.com/pictures/2007/79688/photo.jpg

In 2008, when I was in Madrid for a weekend, one friend told me that his mechanic was selling this amazing car for just 12.000 euros. A Mercedes Benz CLK 320 (only 120.000 kmts), and I couldnīt resist
http://images03.olx.com/ui/1/77/05/3807205_1.jpg

Then, 5 months after buying it, a "very nice person" stole it just to use it in a jewelry robbery (smashing it against the main window of the jewelry), but, with the money of the insurance I managed to find and buy my actual car, a Mercedes Benz SLK 230 Kompressor. Very funny to drive, fast as hell and a real beauty

I drove an '85 Bronco II for a few years, then switched down to a Dodge Stratus. I miss that old beast. She was a bitch to drive in high wind but I could take her just about anywhere and be able to get back out again. I miss being able to downshift at will to help me slow down in a hurry or to ease my way down a steep grade. I miss the roar of the engine when I'd fire it up in the morning, and the way the throttle would get stuck in high idle when the big freeze would settle in.

More than anything I miss flying down the back roads in the summer with both windows down, the sounds of the undercarriage rattling away over the washboards, and spending weekends trying to figure out how to fix or replace the next part that had just gone kaput.

Her time in this world would have been a bit longer if I hadn't taken the job delivering pizza. I had driven the Bronco for over six years with few problems, but within just a few months of working that job the truck really started showing her age. Didn't take long to kill her. Poor old Beauty.

Back in '74 a friend of mine owned an original Bronco. Very nice li'l trucklet. I wanted one but my wife wanted something sportier, so the only new car I ever had was a Mustang II.

I like the original Broncos, at least looking in from the outside. I've never driven one but every so often I see one that's been kept in good condition by its owner.

A good friend of mine owned a used Mustang II shortly after he graduated high school. He kept it running for close to a year or so before a gasket somewhere on the engine blew out - that was an afternoon I will never forget. Driving anywhere with him was memorable anyway, but that afternoon was the only time he'd ever left a smokescreen. He had just changed the oil and when he turned the engine over again it started acting up. Next thing we knew we were all standing in a cloud of smoke. Well he figured that was the end of the line for his car, so we loaded up and drove halfway across town to the JB's restaurant for coffee. The smoke trail we left on the way was so thick that the police had trouble keeping track of us. Once they drove out of the smoke trail they realized that we had turned off into a parking lot. It wasn't but a minute later that they caught up and politely asked him not to start the engine again until he got it fixed. :har:

Seeing that car reminded me a lot of the Honda CVCC wagon that my grandparents owned. They bought it new in the late 70's and kept it running long enough to pass on to my mother, who in turn passed it down to me. That car served three generations of our family over the course of more than twenty years.

Almost the same color. :)

Interesting part of our car's history: my grandparents were living in the Idaho panhandle when St. Helen's erupted. The ash that came downwind afterward ruined the engine and they had to have it replaced. So Honda, being the awesome company that it was back then, put a new engine in for them free of charge. Anyway, the CVCC wagon was my very first car. The first time I drove her I hadn't quite figured out how to use the clutch...

and there I was, hurtling along at 40mph in second gear. *wwwwhhHHHIIIIIIRRRR!!!!* "Oh crap! I'd better shift now." :o:DL

It looks like it was a badass little car. Must be the fog lights and rims tricking me. :88)

I wasn't able to trade the Honda in. Once the time came for major repairs there wasn't anybody in town willing to guarantee the work. The car was so old that the repairs would have cost more than it was actually worth, so I drove it till it died. When it finally kicked the bucket I had enough money saved up to buy another clunker. :)

No don't get me wrong, that isn't a photo of the actual car I owned....it/they only had an 1100cc engine, you could probably cycle as fast :DL

My last car was a 1994 Escort wagon

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a325/SailorSteve/97-99_Ford_Escort_wagon.jpg

Stock photo. Mine was Teal Green, about the same color as hospital scrubs.

Great car, if you didn't mind going from 0-60 in a week. A whopping 88 horsepower. Got 32 MPG in town and 44 on the open road, unless you had a headwind, in which case it was about 30, or a tailwind, which boosted it up to around 50. I lost it in a wreck, and I still miss it.

:rotfl2:

Ours was a hatchback. Looked good, but it was heavy and clunky and came with a German-built V-6. Low power, terrible gas mileage, but it looked good and my wife loved it. The Germans are famous for their engineering, but this one must have been designed by Bernard. I had to change the water pump in both it and my '65 Chevy truck within about a month of each other. The truck had four 1/2" bolts for the fan and four more for the pump itself. The whole job took half-an-hour.

With the Mustang you had to take off the entire front of the engine - thirty-five 7mm bolts and a long spaghetti-thin gasket. I couldn't get the gasket on right and I stripped one of those tiny bolts. What a nightmare! Luckily my mother's husband at the time knew how to save me from my folly.

There there was the clutch pedal. The pedals were mounted to a single overhead bar. There was a mount to the right of the gas pedal, and one to the left, and there was a third mount to the left of the brake pedal. Unfortuantely there was no mount to the outside of the clutch pedal, on the far left, and the thing broke like clockwork about once every two years. Start the car with it in first gear, shift without the clutch, shut if off in neutral at every stop sign and light and repeat the procedure until I could reach the shop.

Did I mention it looked good?

No. The reason was my siblings could not say our dad just gave me a car thus creating ill will. I can say I paid for it which I did. All be it 1 dollar. There is always a method to the madness. :DL
