how do you re-enable renown when you get to the patrol area? for me it just makes the game seem sort of pointless, becuse you can do whatever you want.

In the basic.cfg file there is the following lines:
[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=0
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=0
Just set those to whatever values you feel is appropiate to justify you hanging around. I go for 250/500.
Get to know this file, there's a lot of tweaks you can do to make the game more enjoyable for you.

^ :yep:
To be more specific:
The first line is for how much renown you get just for going to the assigned grid.
The second line is for how much renown you get for patrolling there for the "required" 24 hours.
Goes without saying that you should make a backup copy of the "basic" basic.cfg in case you ever make a bad edit that gives you problems, or at the very least just as a reference.
If you use SH3 Commander you can also use the "Static Settings.cfg" file in its Cfg folder to make selected edits to the basic.cfg only when you launch the game via Commander (if you open the file, there are instructions on how to set it up right at the top). And if you have auto-rollback selected in the Commander options, it undoes the edits when you exit the game - so you always have the original file in place if you need to refer to it in between gaming sessions. That's become the only way I make those kinds of edits.

Good to know this, I think I'll re-enable it too (but only for reaching the grid) :)
Is there also a way to re-enable the hull integrity display in GWX?

I believe there is an option for this in Commander, to either show or hide the hull integrity %. The default is to hide it so you have to go in and change that if you want it to show up in the game.

Frau's belief is correct. Click 'SH3 Options' (the wrench at the bottom of the Commander screen) and choose the third option 'Text Settings'. There will find the option to show or hide 'Hull Integrity'.

Aaah, I knew of this option in SHIII, but thought GWX overrules it anyway. How silly of me to not even try it

Well, welcome to the club. I make it a habit to do stupid/crazy/silly things every chance I get. :D

First, do these files open up or do U need another program to open them,... the ones for changing renown. Second, I am on like my 7th patrol, my men have quite a bit experiance and have yet to recieve promotions. What is this about??? I remember in VANILLa they would GET promotions when THEIR experiance went above certain levels.:06:

A .cfg should be just a text file, you can open it in Notepad.

If you are using SH3 Commander, you can promote them within their class whenever they have enough experience.
Otherwise, with stock or GWX, the game will offer you promotions at the end of fairly successful patrols.
Stock, as far as I remember, does not automatically promote people. It simply gives you a few use-it-or-lose-it chances.

U are very gracious with Ur knowledge. I do use commander, but out of 7 patrols with a IIA and a IID, I've managed to sink around 63,000 tons. Historically that would probably be amazing. But O'well, I'll take what they give me. Maybe after I complete a regular campain in GWX, which I know is unrealistic because of the length of a career, I will try the Commander. If I am right, I think it gives U like what, a 2 year career??....
Wulfgar44

I meant to say that I DO NOT use Commander.

Commander is well worth a try...believe me it can enhance the game to quite a substantial degree.

It does give you a realistically short career, but that is an option you can turn on and off, and even if you have it turned on it gives you an option to "unretire" and go back to service.
It also lets you promote crew and give them medals and qualifications, as many as you want instead of the one that SH3 does.
It lets some crew leave the ship, and new ones come aboard, without costing you any renown. Sometimes they leave due to transfers, and sometimes for..."other reasons".
:rotfl2:
It will give your new captain an appropriate German name if you want, and there are over 1.7 billion crew names possible, so you won't see the same names over and over.
It lets you adjust the reload speed of the deck gun.
It gives a real name to every ship you sink, and it lists what cargo the ship was carrying, and how many crew were aboard and how many died.
It lets you turn the Hull Integrity meter on and off.
It does a lot of other things, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
As Jimbuna says: SH3 Commander - don't leave port without it. :sunny:

With all these advancements in the game, I'll never get through a Campain. I had to start over from Vanilla with GWX. Of course I could never go back to Vanilla. I just want to play through one. The thing as I have said about Commander that has held me off, is the limited Career time. Not that I want to be UNREALISTIC,... I just don't want the game to end. But I would like to make it past 1941, which is about as far as I ever get before I have to restart it due to an improvement. I do LOVE all the MOD people and their DEVOTION and and lack of SELFISHNESS.:yeah: What MAKES COMMANDER so GREAT????? I mean I was already BLOWN away by GWX. THANK U.:salute:

Well, Sailor Steve answered that question. And I must say too well. Guess I'll be starting another Campain. Oh, My Goodness!!!! Back to '39 again. It must be GROUNDHOG Day, and I am Bill Murray. Ok,... so how do I install this with GWX and SHGEN??? Man, I wish I could put this into my Campain now,... but whatever.

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
Wulfgar, you must be my long-lost brother (or son, but we won't go into that here)!
From the introduction of SH3 I have done exactly that same thing. Every new mod (especially the ones that improve the appearance of the ports) has forced me to start over from scratch. Rubini's original Harbor Traffic mod? Start over. Advanced AI mods? Start over. Realistic Depth Charges? Start over? RUB (the first supermod)? Start over. GWX? Start over. BBW's improved Wilhelmshaven? Start over.
Since SH1 my habit has been to run simultaneous careers, one from each Flotilla. When a career ends, due to death or retirement, I start a new one at the same place and time, so sooner or later some of my kaleuns will reach the end of the war.
But...
Six years now, and I've never gotten past mid-1940. Starting over is a pain. It's also an addiction.
I'm currently not playing at all, until I have the money for a computer that will run things like FlakMonkey's New Interiors and IABL's Merchant Fleet Mod Pack. And now there's Hans Witteman's new mod coming.
So, on one hand I truly empathize with your plight. On the other, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT! :O:

Like SH3 Gen, Commander is an external tool. It lets you control SH3 from the outside, so it doesn't conflict with any mods. Just download it and read the User Guide. That will explain everything.

Does that mean I have to start my Campain over. I didn't when I installed SHGEN. Please tell me I don't. PLEASE!!!! I am on my 6th year too. Between all that Sailor Steve said, work, and then getting married. It slowed my patrols down. Like Him as well, I don't won't to Hear THINGS either,....like FLAKMONKEY's or whatever. After I get SH Commander installed and working, U guy's may not see me till Jan.1,1943. I don't even want to know about any other mods until I FINISH and then am DEPRESSED because the SIM( my wife call's it a GAME) is over and need NEW LIFE to it. I thank U all so much. I mean if people were like U GUYS, and Gals( Frau Kaleun), in everyday life, this would be a very different world.

Technically no. Whether you really have to is up to your personality. Mine seems to be sick.
I am on my 6th year too.
Yours too, apparently. Good luck with that.
( my wife call's it a GAME)
They tend to do things like that. Then again, it seems to be part of the job description.

What's this download all about??? I've downloaded version 2.7 for Commander and the GWX3 Config for SH3 Commander. Can anyone tell me what to expect or do??? I will not be able to actually install it till about 9:30pm tonight. Figured I'd get some advice while I had some time. I was just going to RUN the Commander but now the Config has me "wondering".

You'll need that CFG to enable you to fully utilise GWX with Commander.

I've never done it (that "starting over" thing rings a few bells :haha:) but I'm pretty sure that when you install Commander and direct it to your existing game installation, it will read the files that are already there and recognize any careers already in progress.

That's Good. I just want to get on into the SIM( not game). Mods like that are friendly to me. I have no friends locally who play this. I don't know anyone who does. All my friends and wife think I'm :88)CRAZY:haha: for sailing around and not doing anything but sailing. They always ask me if I'm UNDER the Water, when they Phone. At least now, I can continue to move forward and not starting over. I hope all goes well.

Commander is up to v3.2. V2.7 is old old old. Get the latest one here:

I am not sure how U open or Install this file to work. I downloaded the Config to. They say they need a program to open them.

The downloaded files are compressed files (.zip, .rar, .7z, some type of compressed format). You need to extract the files contained in the compressed files you downloaded, when you do so you will find (in both cases) .exe files to run for setup and installation.
Right click on the compressed file and choose Extract or Extract To... and extract them to some location on your hard drive, then run the .exe files. Install Commander first, then run the self-installer for the config files.

7zip is better than most and it is free:
