View Full Version : U-Boat Torpedo Room Data Plates
I have some U-boat data plates that came from a Type VIIC or Type IX that has the following words. The plates are circular. Does anyone have an idea of what they mean or know of where in any of those pictures these would have been located?
"Notklappe bei Gefahr" this is a circular ID plate.
around it is another plate with words such as:
- Fuhrungsrohr lagerbock, Mundungsklappe Lagerbock oben, Mundungsklappe Lagerbock unten, Schubslagengeb Stopfbuchse, Schubslagengeb Gleitbahn

I like a good mystery, so I'll bite. :)
Babel Fish gives me this for translation:
Emergency flap with danger
Driving pipe clevis mounting, mouth flap clevis mounting above, mouth flap clevis mounting down, Schubslagengeb stuffing box, Schubslagengeb guideway
Broke Schubslagengeb down to:
Schubs = thrust
lageneng = lay narrow
The mechanical parts:
Clevis mounts/fasteners: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clevis_fastener
Stuffing box: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuffing_box
The 'stuffing box' part I can almost picture in my head. It's supposed to help keep water from leaking in around parts of machinery. I haven't the foggiest idea as to what the clevis mounts would have attached to. Mouth flap/driving pipe to what, I wonder? :hmmm:
Is it from an aft compartment? The 'Schubs', or 'thrust', part makes me wonder if this plate of yours belonged to part of a propulsion system. Or maybe 'thrust' indicates a pusher shaft, as opposed to a revolving shaft. :06:
There has to be someone here who knows this stuff. :ping: :ping: :ping: :ping:

A picture of said item would probably help...
Führungsrohr is not a driving pipe, I'd translate it with leading pipe or probably more accurate guiding pipe, if that makes any sense to you.
Also a Lagerbock, is not a clevis fastener, I guess you could translate it with (ball/roll)bearing mount.

Sorry for that oversized pic
Mündungsklappe, is the torpedo tube door, I guess the Lagerböcke served as hinges for that

Krashkart, what did I tell you about online translators?:timeout: Never trust a computer...
I've got some really funny google translation stories, but I won't tell you them in an open forum here as they will ruffle some feathers.:03:
If you really want to hear them, tell me and I'll pm you.:|\\
