Sorry to start with such a lame question. I am trying to do SHIII. I cannot seem to complete the 1st navigation mission. I achieve all goals and told as soon as I surface I am done. I surface. Nothing happens. If I hit 'esc' and quit mission that doesn't seem to be the right thing to do (or was it somehow?). I did some surfing and looking at FAQs:
1) Did in "exam" mode
2) Put engine at full stop
How do I in fact succeed in this silly mission? I've done it 4 times now and can't complete (or not sure if I have).
Sorry.

Yep, you want to hit escape and exit the "mission" once you get the message that you've completed your objectives.
It always throws me for a loop because if I remember correctly the popup when you do that asks if you want to *abandon* the mission, which makes it seem like you're doing something wrong if you answer 'yes' - but it's okay, because as long as you completed the objectives you're fine.
You can confirm your success as well once you get out of there and go back to the screens you started from, if you passed the test your "grade" will show up in the results.
Oh and welcome aboard!

This is the most welcoming, friendly MB I've ever seen. Wow. I'm impressed.
I've been reading about the Battle of the Atlantic (I'm designing a WWII board game) and become interested in the U-Boats. This led to my reading Night Raider of the Atlantic. Then I head about SHIII and the Grey Wolves. So while I'm not much of a sim guy (I tend to like turn based wargames) I thought I'd try out the experience. I've committed myself to a minimum of 20 hours to really try something like this out.
A question since folks are so helpful. I'm planning to do the tutorials in straight forward SHIII (as downloaded from Steam). Then immediately install Grey Wolves and try a campaign. Would folks suggest a different course of learning/installing for a newbie?
Thanks again,
Luke

There's lots of threads here that will introduce yet more for you to read, information and links, and if that's not enough just ask away and you'll (usually) get some great answers.
I've said this before, but it's worth repeating - I don't do forum as a rule, I'll nip on to the odd one for some tech info for work, but I don't subscribe to any with any heart. Until subsim came into my life. It's so friendly and welcoming, a wonderful community that's willing to help, share, and have fun along the way. (Apart from the uber-hard working mods, creating all the little (and big) add-on goodies to improve our lives) :smug:

Some people will tell you to play the stock game for a while, until you get the hang of the basics, before installing a supermod like GWX3.
Other people will tell you that the supermods are so awesome that you shouldn't waste any time playing the stock game at all.
So, it's up to you. Personally I played very little of the stock game except for the Academy stuff and then came here and ended up with GWX3. Whether or not it took me longer to get the hang of things because of that I don't know, but IMO when I did what I got the hang of was GWX, so it's all good. :yep:
I don't know anything about Steam versions of the game but a lot of players keep multiple installations of it, one that's still the stock game and others that get 'upgraded' to GWX3 or another supermod version. It's just a matter of copying the game folder into another location and using a little utility called MultiSH3 (can be found in the Downloads here or possibly at the Filefront link in Jimbuna's signature above).
Again, I don't know if that's possible with Steam but if it is someone here has done it and can tell you how, so if you want to have more than one 'flavor' of SH3 to choose from at any given moment, just ask around.

The multi link is appreciated too. Did the convoy stalking tutorial. Exciting!
My goal is to try out night surface attacks as per Night Raider of the Atlantic....
I am going to punt on doing torpedo calculations right now. My thought is to pay U-Boat Commander right now.. is it right to think the commander would not be doing the targeting computer but rather picking target?

Depends.
For submerged attacks, the commander would be at the periscope, calling out the relevant numbers (range, speed, AOB, running depth for eels, etc.) and those would be fed into the system.
For surface attacks, typically the 1WO (first officer, US equiv would be XO) would be at the UZO focusing on the targets and calling out that stuff while the commander remained in charge of the overall tactical situation.

WELCOME ABOARD! :sunny:
is it right to think the commander would not be doing the targeting computer but rather picking target?
The Captain looks through the periscope and the Exec reads the stadimeter and notes the bearing. The Captain focuses the periscope and the Exec notes the range. Together they double-check the calculations. While the Captain does have help, everything depends on him using the periscope properly. If he has the wrong settings then the calculations will be wrong no matter who does them.
The targeting computer is like a modern computer - Garbage In, Garbage Out.

Thanks folks. For surface attacks I won't feel bad then using 'assist'. Eventually I'll try to learn to use the 'computer' for submerged attacks.

I use WE Assistance for everything. I dislike that he's so perfect, but I just can't get manual targeting.
And thank you for posting. That may sound silly on the face of it, but you'd be amazed at how many post that one greeting and are never heard from again. We appreciate everyone who actually gets involved.
