View Full Version : Smoking 'causes damage in minutes', US experts claim
Smoking damages the body in minutes rather than years, according to research in the US.The report, published in Chemical Research in Toxicology, shows that chemicals which cause cancer form rapidly after smoking.Scientists involved in the small-scale study described the results as a stark warning to people considering smoking.Anti-smoking charity Ash described the research as "chilling" and as a warning that it is never too early to quit.

And next year some one else will say there research shows this not to be the case. Welcome to the gravy train of research and backhanders. ;)

well, i refuse to smoke cigarettes, i find the smell of many brands to be unpleasant.
cigars on the other hand, i will smoke.
however, ask any connoisseur and he will tell you cigars are not to be inhaled only drawn into the mouth, flavored, and expelled. admired for their flavor and aroma rather than some intoxicating effect.
everyone has their vices, chewing tobacco, cigarettes, cigars or alcohol... and im sure that everyone is well aware of the risks of those vices.
from my point of view, sometimes i wish those organizations like "ash" would just shut up.
if someone over 18 wants to smoke a cigarette, let them, they are grown up enough to know better.;)
then again, my grandfather smoked cigarettes from the time he was about 8 or 9 years old up until he was about 40. He died at the ripe old age of 86.
My other grandfather was a sea captain who was hardly ever seen without a cigar. he died at about 65 due to a condition associated with long term industrial petroleum exposure.
the bottom line that i have adopted in the last 3 or 4 years is that something has to kill you. I have known a LOT of young people in the 20-30 age group who have been killed by being hit by cars, car accidents, plane crashes, acts of war or terrorism, aortic dissection and the list goes on...
fact is my roof could cave in killing me as soon as i finish typing this post.
i could die, literally at any minute.
so... may as well live a little while one has the chance. :yep:

Regretfully, the author of the previous post was found deceased at his keyboard shortly after his last post was made. The investigation into the cause of death is ongoing, but preliminary reports indicate that the author was already dead of carpal tunnel syndrome long before the roof fell in on him.

Same with me, I find cigarettes disgusting, but the smoke never bothered me. Only the smell of the clothes :x
But cigars I find enjoyable, pure tobacco and the anger of the cigarette smokers who find cigar smoke offensive... now that boils my blood

Same goes for me :yep:
However it's worth pointing out that while cigars aren't a big risk for lung cancer, they're known to increase chances of mouth cancers.
But hey, as something that you savour only very rarely and in good company, that small risk is well-justified imho. Most cigar smokers are not compulsive and as most things done for taste, it's something that is best done only occasionally.
Smoking Cigarettes is indeed a pretty crappy habit, I've tried cigarettes and personally got no high from them...
Though if offered something similar to a cigarette with a more ... ahem... illegal substance... in it then tobacco I will hit that without a second thought.:O: (Not like you need to smoke that substance to use it however)

I almost started smoking because the trains were always running late. It was mid january, -10 celcius, I was freezing my butt of waiting for a train that already was 20min late, and next to me some guy smoking a cigarate as cool as he was on a beach somewhere looking at passing ships... and what am I supposed to do, eat pretzels ??
And yes, cigars are a mouth cancer risk, Sigmund Freud died because of it and he was a chain cigar smoker. But alas, I cannot be a chain cigar smoker, I cant afford them

Ditto.
one or two a month perhaps. but several a day or even per week... no way.
EDIT:
I have 8 in my humidor, unless i share with friends, those should last me until mid march if not early April.
I smoke maybe a half-dozen cigars a year at most, always on vacation with friends when we can just sit down and puff away with a glass of the good stuff, like the classy gentlemen we are :|\\
Everyone knows well that smoking is not the best, the thread was, however, if additional side effects that have a greater impact, as a research proven, but this, did you know already.
