Met With Bipartisan Dissent. At least three Democrats in the Senate and several more in the House are voicing opposition to a proposed regulation from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that would require about 8,500 gun dealers in four states – California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas – to report gun sales of two or more high-powered rifles sold within five consecutive business days. The proposal isn't connected in any way to the mass shooting in Arizona last weekend that left six people dead and 14 others wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., because the suspect used a handgun, which is already covered under these reporting requirements.

As with pretty much any proposed gun laws, I ask the question: Are we enforcing our existing laws to the best of our ability?

If not, then new legislation is not the best solution.

New legislation should only be enacted when it can be demonstrated that enforcing our existing laws does not solve the problem.

Do these knuckleheads honestly think that doing something like this is going to prevent illegal firearms trades?

this is ridiculous.

it becomes more and more a point of the government to punish the law abiding citizens

I'm not sure how increased reporting burdens on gun dealers will prevent anything. Do they think the guys buying these guns won't figure out how to get around it by using different buyers or stores?
