I was finding the game pretty easy even though i play with 100% realsim and use alot of mods to simulate historical accuracy. I wondered how this could be then it dawned on me. I have access to one thing a real skipper does not, a reload button.
I started playing with no savegame files, in other words once I load my savegame, I delete the savegame file. This considerably changes the dynamic of the game. Every decision has a real consequence, if you make a mistake there's no going back.
I currently do this for patrols but I'm not brave enough to delete the entire campaign savegame... yet. I doubt anyone would make it passed 1941 without reloading at least once.
The only hickup with sh5 is that damn immersion killing autosave feature. I have to continually delete savegame files as they are created. thanks ubi ;)

Well you could go all hardcore and play the game locked at x1 compression. :DL I know a few have done this over the years here with previous SH.

If you want harder game play then i suggest a few of my mods .
sobers fog : more realistic gameplay , its awesome in a convoy .
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2925
sobers underwater blur: no more looking at ships underwater
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2750
May i suggest no ship wakes: no more spotting ship wakes thru waves
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1719
Also i turn down the gamma so on a moonless night i can only bearly see the crew standing next to me .
Only works if you have a darkened room or a cardboard box surrounding the screen LOL . I find the in game gamma useless , adjust the gamma on the moniter.
Also try my TC settings . Apply to the SH5 folder in my documents .

Yes many of us play this way. We like to call it Dead is Dead. When I get killed I start a new campaign with a new name. I think I'm on my third time out from base as a new captain.
Also once I come in contact I go real-time. This usual takes hours of play once I call battle stations.
You may also want to try Real Navigation. This takes you sub mark off the map. I do this but I have my navigator get me a fix every 12 hours using celestrial navigation. I use dead reckoning for more frequent marks.

If you want to play with real fear in your eyes, bind yourself to a real dead-is-dead promise. No, don't kill yourself. Just determine that if you die you'll put the game away and not touch it again for a year. You'll think twice about every decision after that.

And here I though I came up with this idea.

Someone should make a mod that uninstalls SH5, installs a virus then deletes your UBI account if you die on a patrol.

I've played tabletop wargames all my life. A major part of the fun is painting figures, tanks, planes and ships. A very long time ago someone suggested that it might feel more real if your opponent got to take a hammer and smash every piece he "killed". A bit extreme, but we still joke about it.

Well then, everybody would be attacking task forces on the surface... what am I talking about, the surface fleet won't even see you.. There must be another way to get rid of a UBI account :)
