WASHINGTON -- Beleagured GOP Chairman Michael Steele on Friday dropped his bid to stay atop the party for another two years after falling further behind top challenger Reince Priebus in several rounds of voting.

"At this time, I will step aside for others to lead," Steele told RNC members at the Gaylord Resort in National Harbor, Md.

Steele got a standing ovation after his announcement following a tenure marked by controversy and embarrassment despite huge Republican gains in the fall. Steele is now urging supporters to vote for Maria Cino.

Stepping aside is racist? Odd... :hmmm:

I'm not sure if Steeles heart is in it anymore. I thought he was ok.

Just trying to get it out there before others.

I would have expected the RNC to pick a woman.

Well I hope this guy can do better than Steele. Good luck to him.

The GOP has a lot to do. Good RNC leadership is what is needed.
