WASHINGTON -- Beleagured GOP Chairman Michael Steele on Friday dropped his bid to stay atop the party for another two years after falling further behind top challenger Reince Priebus in several rounds of voting.
"At this time, I will step aside for others to lead," Steele told RNC members at the Gaylord Resort in National Harbor, Md.
Steele got a standing ovation after his announcement following a tenure marked by controversy and embarrassment despite huge Republican gains in the fall. Steele is now urging supporters to vote for Maria Cino.
