Running v1.5 with RFB & RSRD. I am cruising off Formosa, and I can't seem to find very much in the way of targets. I could raid the harbor, but I would hate to lose my boat on my first patrol. Suggestions?

I have those maps, but I don't want to just go around and cherry pick task forces, especially since I know when and where they are.

They can still be a chore to find, unless you pick ambush points. RSRD is historical, so your gonna find traffic in historical places. I do understand the want to just find things, played RSRD that way for over a year. Still, at the beginning of the war you know the Philippines is being invaded, so hunt around ports there. The japs then work south towards Java, in 42 the Solomons.
The best you can do is place yourself where the game tells you campaigns are happening. Course if you know history and know traffic will be there and don't want to go there, then you'll miss the biggest groups in RSRD. So watch the lil intel movies when you dock and see where intel thinks major action is coming, go there instead of your patrol zone. You'll get flash messages and be close enough to intercept.
One good things about RSRD is most of the patrol zones have something major coming through, but it's a matter of timing. Whatever is coming through doesn't care about your patrol star being yellow or gray. Simply, you get to your patrol zone early and the star goes gray and you leave, you may miss something scheduled for the next day. If you're gonna do patrol zones, go there by the quickest route and hange around for a few days after the star grays out.
You're next bet is to hang around the outside of straits where large naval bases exist.

Are there any preferred tactics for taking down a task force? Forgive me for my n00bness.

Depends on what kind of task force you're talking about. If it's a large task force with BBs and CVs in it, chances are pretty good that you're only going to have time for one shot. Such task forces generally have numerous escorts and you won't get much time to shoot. Pick one target out and go for it. The situation will dictate how many or how few targets you can shoot at. Also remember that capaital ships take more torpedoes to sink them, especially the BBs.
Hope this helps you out some. :D

I was there late 1942 just south and on the eastern side of the Island. Lots of single ships running around, no convoys, running TMO w RSRD.

Yeah, I'm there in early 42 and I wouldn't even day there were a bunch of single ships.
