I don't understand the damage model anymore... After playing the game tricked out with mods, I still have a very difficult time... well... dying...

Just for ****s and giggles, I turned on the "Bismark" single mission and surfaced for a gun battle between two battleships and two destroyers.

The results were nothing short of amazing... It quite literally required the entire battlegroup to sink me... a measly U-boat.
True... I was holed like swiss cheese, but I took dozens of 5.5 inch shells and a few 14 inch shells from the battleships before being destroyed...

Noticing the crazy amount of firepower needed to bring me down, I went into a training exercise where I was attacked by the dreaded airforce.
I didn't record the results, but I must have taken 6 direct bomb hits (I don't know what the poundage was on those bombs) and I was still chugging along... I always thought that just one... two at most would bring me to the bottom of the sea.

Is this realistic at all? If it isn't, is there a mod that makes damage more realistic?

Try GWX3.0

Try GWX3.0

I am... GWX + SH3 commander with longer repair times... but these "tests" with the battleships and bombs were done before longer repair times mod was installed.

Try GWX 3-0 in career mode

Strange. My boat seems to be lousy built then - last time I've put it in harm's way it was down to 50% hull integrity after 2 shells from 4 inch bow cannon on Flower corvette (and perhaps a bunch of AA rounds). And that's with stock SH3 damage model, which is considered much more forgiving than GWX's...

What... what did I do?

I tried it again... did some "tests" with the damage model... My hull integrity display off, which may be a crucial tool in these tests... but I kept them off...

What I discovered was that after a few good shell hits, or a direct hit from a bomb or two... submerging was a death sentence... Just kept sinking until the "destroyed due to flooding." came on... Even flank speed with blowing ballasts didn't keep me afloat... and once I was submerged, the rate of flooding increased quite a bit.

I still think it's a bit unrealistic. I was hit in the engine compartment with a bomb dropped by the RAF, but the diesel engine was still working... I was expecting the whole engine to be absolutely unusable...

Update: I turned on the hull integrity display and after a direct bomb hit, the hull integrity went down by 6%...
Yes... 6%... a direct hit from a bomb only took away 6%... this may have something to do with the Longer repair Time mod. The LRT mod increases the HP of a U-boat in order to prevent the endgame screen from triggering too soon while your U-boat is under repair... or something...

I also detect the Aroma of Troll*... I've _NEVER_ had a problem getting sunk (in ANY iteration of the SH series).

* Available in the Woman's section many fine department stores.

I guess it's the LRT mod, but how to solve this invincibility problem?

The point is... I'm not trying to troll but is there a line of code in the DATA folder I can change in order to get the U-boat hitpoints to GWX standards?

Your not running GWX but your running LRT? Thought you said you were running GWX?

Boats like to float until you put holes into them. Surface attacks are most likely going to hit the top of the boat, and not sink it...... Until you try to dive.......

Try rolling back everything, uninstalling, etc etc, and reinstall. I'd bet theres an error somewhere in one of your data files.

No no no... I am running all three. GWX3, SH3 Commander and LRT at the same time....
And I did discover that diving after being blasted is a surefire way to sink helplessly to the bottom.
I'm just surprised that I need to be hit by dozens of bombs, or a few 14 inch shells before any crew members inside my sub get wounded or killed. That and that this firepower is needed before I'm officially considered "destroyed".
There's no errors as far as I can tell. I've uninstalled LRT and noticed that cannon fire does more hull integrity damage without LRT than with LRT... this is because the mod programmer increased the hit points for all subs to prevent premature death screens before the longer repair times began kicking in and benefiting the sub's condition, (such as engine and hydrophone damages. Not HP, since HP are not recoverable).

Which LRT mod are you running, the older one or h.sie's realistic repair times? h.sie doesn't have seemed to made any changed in the ship damage, (my ship wasn't any stronger than before) which seems to be what you're experiencing for some unknown reason. The mod itself does a lot of different things beyong making the repair times more realistic:

In my experience, the damage model is flawed with or without LRT.

Winning gun duels with destroyers and armed merchant cruisers is possibly and hardly risky under some circumstances, but torpedo boats are a massive pain (several waterline 105mm and scores of 37mm hits and they're still circling...). Our own boat also refuses to sink after ridiculous punishment, although it gets battered easily enough.

I'm aware that the damage model shouldn't be simple and immediately intuitive (e.g. some shells could go right through a flimsy target, compartmentalisation and reserve buoyancy are often more important than size or armour etc) but things do feel very off.

I'm using LRT v2.04 full for GWX3, but now that you've notified me about h.sie's RRT... I've never seen this page before...

I'll give it a go.

Update: Realistic repair times from h.sie seems much better than LRT that I have... considering that flooding is nearly impossible to stop in LRT.
It's frustrating that Ubisoft was unwilling to fix some simple coding in order to get the same realistic effect (and that the company can get away with broken products like that) compounded by copywrite laws that's forcing h.sie to make a complicated solution to our (or my, depending on how you look at it) problem with realistic repair times.

I have no idea how to implement h.sie's fix. I will continue to read through the forum, trying to find a way to install the fix without uninstalling the entire SH3, SH3 Commander, GWX mods.

But if there is a knowledgeable computer whiz out there, here is a captain hoping for a quick rescue by detailed instructions.
Using Vista 64x
Geforce 9800 GS
Intel Centrino 2
