View Full Version : Fireworks may have caused Arkansas bird deaths
Scores of dead birds have been sent off for scientific analysis to determine the cause of death.US scientists believe fireworks may have caused thousands of birds to fall from the sky over an Arkansas town on New Year's Eve.Karen Rowe, of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said the red-winged blackbirds probably flew low to avoid explosions and collided with objects. However, she stopped short of declaring the mystery solved, saying further tests on the dead birds are planned.Officials say more than 3,000 birds fell over the city of Beebe.

That'd have to be a lot of fireworks to bring down that many birds even if they were flying together.
It is a plausible explanation, :yep:
my bet is on heartattacks, fireworks are scary.

They said on the news last night the birds had showed signs of trauma. That don't sound like a heart attack to me...
Seems there is a lot of dead fish too over there?

Initially I was thinking of a leak of toxic gas into the atmosphere but perhaps early testing of a Martian death ray :hmmm:

Again several hundred birds fell dead from the sky, in Louisianna.
The first bird strike at new years eve was accompanied by a massive dying of fishes in a little river just 150 km away.
The new bird dying took place 600 km south of the first.
If there were volcanoes nearby, I would say volcanic activity and gas intoxication. But so... Anyway, the firwork thoery I do not buy. It would be happening more often, and one would expect the more events the more populated the area is. Which means in the vicinity of major cities birds should not stop falling down form the sky like raindrops there.
Military experiments? Environmental intoxication? Poison garbage? A moving toxic cloud that also is effective when mixing with water?
Events like these are very rare over land, say ornothologists, and another strange thing is why so many birds flocked together - while it is no wandering season.

German media now report that in Falköping, a small town in Southern Sweden, also a mass dying of birds, which then fell from the sky, has taken place yesterday. Around 100 birds, (in German called "Dolen") were found.
If all these cases have the same causes, then a weather phenomenon is the most likely explanation, even mores ionce it was said that the birds already were hurt when falling down.
But it still is unanswered why outside any season for mass migration of birds, so many birds flocked together in the incidents in the US.

I thought of that too but the reports i've heard is that the trauma was sustained before they died and they were dead before they hit the ground.
I don't buy the fireworks theory. Especially now that it's happened again.
Finnish news say that a truck driver has reported in and said he had driven over the birds in Sweden.

The first comment by people in the online newspaper site, with the louisiana birds were all about the end of the world, birds using the magnetic poles for orientation and the planet poles have shifted a lot this year (yes in 5 days...)etc.
It's the end of the world I say....

Take that with a grain of salt. They're still guessing about what happened so I'm not putting too much stock in the accuracy of these early reports.

I suppose the fireworks idea could have some merit.
There are several things of interest in different reports though.
Some say the birds were spooked from their roost by the pro type fireworks that were set off near by, ones much more powerful than the standard bottle rocket.
That caused them to take flight and other fireworks in the area kept them flying in the air and being having poor night vision (do they?) they crashed into dwellings and the like.
They were reported to have damage to their breast caused by this, other reports stated massive internal damage to their internal organs.
What bothers me about this is that none of the reports mention damage to their heads or necks. They should have this I should think, possibly some snapped neck bones. If they crashed into something they would hit their heads and necks before their breasts.
Also I don't think "massive internal damage to their internal organs" would result from flying into something, especially if no damage was noted on their beaks, heads, or necks.
Were any found in vast, open areas? If so, dwellings could not have been a factor.
I once saw a bird fly into a window. It fell to the ground dead. I assumed it snapped its neck.
And now it has happened again only 300 miles away. Same species of bird too.

Kinda waters down the fireworks thing, doesn't it?
Could be toxic summer grain (fungus or mold).
What makes me say this is that during WW2 many starving Russians died from eating corn that had been left in the field all that winter and on into the spring. Can't remember if it was fungus or mold, I read of this many years ago.
Of course at this time of year corn wouldn't apply, just a thought that perhaps some sort of summer grain planted as a cover crop could have been a factor.
I really deep down don't think this was the reason, but it sounds like a better possibility than the fireworks.

I don't think it's any creepier than fish falling out of the sky in central Australia, or bits of someone's double-wide trailer home landing in ten counties across the Eastern Seaboard after a freak storm. :)
If you'll pardon the phrase: Nature Does Some Really Weird Stuff Sometimes.

What speaks against intoxication via food is that one muist ask why then all the deads birds died simultaneously within a short time. Exposure to toxines only makes sense when it was a cloud of gas or popison they flew through.
And still: ornithologists say it is strange thast so many birds of these species flock togfether in one swarm outside the wandering season.
The swarm being hit by thundertstorms in midair or the birds getting smitten by hail is an often mentioned theory.

A comment said they could have been hit by a radar sweep. Early reports on the very first incident mentioned - though rarely - burn-like injuries. I myself wonder if maybe some secret satellite projecting a beam - for terrestric measurments via radar or microwaves - also could have something to do with it.
But it seems to be always just one species in one place being effected. Maybe they share a biological feature that is unique to them. Like whales or dolphins being irritated by sonars, and then hitting a beach.
Changes in the magnetic field...? - Just a far-fetched speculation of mine.
Solar radiation phenomenon? Also far-fetched, I know.
Bird flu...? :timeout:
I saw it before, but I find it hard to believe a potential bird flu, but because it has happened in many places worldwide, there is reason to make a proper inquiry into the atmosphere with infrared technology and the help of satellites that can measure other important sources of information

Around 2 million dead fishes discovered at Chesapeake Bay, Maryland.
I wonder if these many incidents really are connected and are correctly attributed to a shared cause. Maybe they are just a statistic anomality - that could happen. There is no guarantee for a pattern of always normal distribution.
Strange phenomena, but even historically has such events occurred in the past

'Aflockalypse' Not Now: Mass Bird Deaths Rare, Not End of World, Experts Say.
Birds falling from the sky worldwide - like the 700 turtledoves that mysteriously fell in the northwestern Italian city of Faenza - are freak events without unusual but not apocalyptic causes, experts say.Storms, hail or lightning can kill birds while tornadoes or waterspouts may suck up small fish or frogs and drop them far away. Human causes, such as fireworks, power lines or a collision with a truck, may explain avian deaths. That hasn't stopped doomsday theorists from dubbing the incidents "aflockalypse," however, or limited the end-of-the world talk. In the latest incident, turtledoves that are often seen throughout the area left behind a scene evocative of a Hitchcock movie as their carcasses piled up over the last five days, according to local news agency Corriere della Sera.
