Does anyone have any advice for torpedo depth? I know how to set it, and how to get the target ship's cut-section displayed on the torpedo depth chart but not really sure what difference it makes. Up till now I've been aiming my torpedos quite shallow in order to hit the verticle sections of hull in order to get a less glancing angle and hopefully decrease the chance it will not explode. I also tend to go impact pistol if I'm confident of hitting at a nice ~90 degree angle as I would assume this explodes closer to the ship than magnetics, and out of my observation it seems magnetics are much more likely to be duds than impact pistols. I use magnetics if its at a more glancing angle or I am not confident that I will hit the target.

What difference does the torpedo depth have?

Am I using the impact/magnetic pistols correctly?

Impact pistols will blow a hole at the place of contact. Magnetics will go off when its near the hull. You can use this to your advange by setting the depth just below the keel. When the torpedo explodes it will bust the main structure of the ship. In essence you are busting its back and may split the hull in two.

Is this actually modeled in SHV? Is there a high chance of failure for the magnetic detonator?

I remember using it in the first campaign mission and getting no detonations.

My answer is no, it doesn't work. But if you want to test that theory, line up a good shot, save the game, then try a magnetic detonation with torpedo depth equivalent to draft + 1 metre. After you watch it sail under the hull and onward to nothingness, you can reload the game.

I hope a modder can get this to work some day because in SHIII, it was a very effective method of attack.

I managed to get it to work, lining up the torpedo with the very bottom edge on magnetic seems to be very effective. Althought initially after the explosion there does not appear to be much damage (visually or using the two "health bars" which go down about 1/4 on the AMCs) but it seems to cause some sort of structural failiure and the water level kept slowly going up and structure continually degraded until the ship sunk. Out of 3 of the AMCs I was targeting 2 were taken down with 2 torpedos, the last with just one. Comparing this to the 2-4 it was taking me to sink AMCs using shallow impact pistol torpedos, its quite an improvement.
