Hi all,

I found this old game (SH 4) on an old resurrected computer in the basement. Silent Service II was my original love with sub sims. That won't run on this computer. I remember the frustration :damn: with SH 2 & SH 4. A lot of the features not working properly, and a complete lack of instructional detail in the manual. In game tutorials were a joke.

A few weeks ago I stumbled onto this site out of curiosity. The posts I read described a whole new game. It seems all the parts UbiSoft left out, or were broken, are now finding their way into the game.
You site has revived my interest in this game to take Silent Service to the next level.

Thank you for all your great work!!!:rock::rock:

P.S. One quick question.

I tried loading SH 4 on a laptop with Vista. No go. Error with D3D9. Will SH 4 run under DX 10 after patching up to 1.5?

Thanks again... OleGrey Ghost

Hi Matey....it sounds like your missing a dll file....you should be able to sort it without resorting to DX10.

Sadly, Vista was never the best OS for the SH series or a whole lot more for that matter but like many before you, the above problem is not insurmountable and you should be playing the sim soon.

Try one of these links:

Hi and thanks for the welcome.

Jimbuna, thank you for the reply to my question and the links. I will check them out. Still waiting for the v 1.5 patch via snail mail.

Vista was never the best OS for the SH series It was never user friendly either. I've spent more time trying to break it. I have had some luck with old games on it though. The laptop doesn't have dx9. Just trying to get a heads up if the 1.5 patch is compatible with DX10. Just don't feel like:damn: with vista.

Just finished patching Sh 4 to v1.4 on the old computer. We shall see. OleGreyGhost

I want to thank you all for the warm welcome.:salute:

Jimbuna, the link you supplied @ http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3d9 (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3d9) was very helpful. It shows the DLL supplied by Ubi is not compatible with Vista.

So I went to M$ help & support looking for a solution.:har: Then I went to M$ technet. After much reading, I came away with the knowledge that they are the only ones who believe in DX9s' compatibiltiy with DX10. And any question about Vista immediately produced a thread for Win 7.:damn::damn::damn:

At least I can still enjoy the game on the other computer. They can't interfere with that. Thanks m8 for your assistance.

Just a quick note...

I haven't given up yet on installing SH 4 onto this laptop. I have one more ship that I am awaiting a message from. Thankfully it isn't M$.
Will report back with my findings.

Sincerely, OlGreyGhost...

My sub tender has arrived with needed supplies & intel. Seems that my Direct x install from Gatewy was flawed, from day 1, but functional.

An old friend explained a complete overhaul would solve my problem. Downloaded the directx Jun2010 redist.exe from CNET and installed. (Many files missing both from DX9 & DX10)

Installed SH 4 to the Program Files directory, applied the 1.4 patch, and we have a launch.:yeah: Took it for a two hours shakedown cruise @ max settings without any problems. Still waaaaaiting for the1.5 patch

So now it is back to sub school:know: to learn all over again..

One happy bilge rat.... OleGreyGhost

Welcome aboard. Since you are running Vista might I suggest -before you get to much into the game- that you reinstall it else where. I have mine installed to D:\Games\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific. The reason being for this is it will eliminate a headache with Vista/Win7 when you try to mod your game. Those two OS are pretty protective over the Program Files folders. Also you can have both DX9 and DX10 installed on the same machine for future reference.

ETR3(SS), thanks for the heads up & the welcome.

I am aware of Vistas' quirks, but it wasn't my choice. Came with the machine. After using it for awhile, I tried to get the company to to downgrade the machine to XP. They wouldn't agree. But I did learn to control the files. I put the virtual store out of business.

I know I won't have a problem with Win 7, Vista has convinced me of that. Ubi has convinced me not to upgrade by adding that DRM garbage onto their games. Enough said. Subsim has conviced me I can enjoy the game without the other two.

I am just going to use the laptop as a test bed for the mods. Hopefully, I'll learn a few things along the way. My old machine is my primary game machine with XP, and I'll use it to enjoy the game.

Sincerely, OleGreyGhost
