View Full Version : The future of simulations
Skybird

simHQ has published a round table interview where participants discussed and exchnaged their views of the genre's future. If half of the names of participants have a meaning to me, then this is a gremium that catches my attention. Among them are Oleg Maddox (IL2-series), Nils Hinrichsen (eSim: Steel Beasts Pro), Vladmimir Zayarnyi (Graviteam: Tiger versus T34), and Richard Flexman Hawley (Tricubic Studios: the helicopter simulation he developes by himself).

An excellent read, Sky. Let us hope that publishers don't completely abandon the PC.

you also forgot to mention 777 Studios, makers of Rise of flight.
Jason talked about the game. I'm and avid player od RoF myself.

The general impression I got was one of slight pessimism.
They seem to be concerned that the future of PC simulations relies on nvidia and ATi staying in the PC GFX market.

Why aren't there any navel sim developers?
personally, i believe that the simulation genre will die
I'm pretty sure creating a sim is more expensive than creating a more casual game, and sims sell less copies. And anyways, when was the last time you saw a sim break into the mainstream market?

Because there are no naval sim games in development... :03:
SCS has nothing in the pipeline for the general public as far as we know.
Ubi has got nothing official in the works.
that leaves what?
Akell and their 2nd PT boat game?
Todem Games next Ironclads if any?
VSTEP and Ship Simulator?
Ilan Papini's Virtual Sailor?
Mike Hense and Dr. Sid?
No real hard hitters on that list
... if only I remembered some of that C++ they tried to teach me in school... :damn:

Good find Skybird  @ Gimpy I am also a RoF+ICE owner. Best $30.00 I ever spent. :yep:

what about the battlestations series? (sure its not exactly a sim, but i enjoyed it)
Anyways, you do have some good 3d modeling skills, and i'll probably buy "TLAM Strike's Modern Submarine Warfare"
just use the engine for Danger from the Deep
oddly, simulation sales in china are increasing, though the only type of sim that is gaining in popularity is the "H-game"

I can't say I have not been tempted... Unfortunately there is a big empty spot in my brain that use to have info on BASIC, C++ and Visual BASIC. I think I store Pizza recipes there or something now...

Back to the topic, I think this project has quite a lot of ambition:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dangerdeep/
(I have a feeling that one of us is behind this project)
It has all the basics, i guess maybe if we find some dedicated modders, give us some time, and we can actually create a top quality game

That sounds greay Gimpy . I've always wanted to try online but, was not sure how to do it.
Maybe you can help see how to do it. :salute:

My opinion on the future of simulations:
Yes it's all blank and empty spaces: There's none. :damn:

Gotta love your optimision :haha::up:
It died sometime in 2009. Killed while walking on the sidewalk while we were heading to a local rib cuisine eatery to be exact. Missed me but he got my optimism. R I P. :haha:
On the serious note. The proof is in my PC's current hard disk.
My simulation:
Dangerous Waters
Free Falcon and
ArmA 2+OA
Recent released sim: OA
Simulation on the to buy list or ones that have caught my interest:
none
I may use my current PC for the next 10 year because games which really interest me have dwindled down to almost zero per year for some time.
The only saving grace recently are ArmA 2 and Total War series aside from Dragon Age and Mass Effect series. But that only means 1-2 PC games a year. There are simply not enough good new games to be excited about.

Disgusting.
It will be the developers who kill the PC in their quest to simplify the sim for the casual gamer.
I loved how many times Falcon 4.0 came up and how they claim the 'bubble burst' with it's release. As one of the original purchasers of that sim I remember how hard it was to learn, and how much more I loved the sim when hobbyists introduced mods that increased the realism, and how disappointed I was when a developer purchased the rights to some of those mods and released it as a new sim (that was a bug ridden mess). The best thing to happen to F4 was it's release to the public domain, again hobbyists have taken it back to something the original developers could only dream of in complexity, tho issues do arise they are addressed in weeks instead of months (or never) from previous commercial devs.
It should take 20 minutes to start the engines in F4, thats why it's called a SIMULATION.
What?
I had falcon4, but had too many issues with it after I tried to install a mod, and No a clean install won't help. Where can I find this wonderful piece of software you speak of?

Google free falcon
or head to flightsim section and see Free Falcon 5.5.3 thread.

If you're using NVIDIA GPU you may want to rename the game exe to FalconAF.exe and download the latest driver which support FalconAF. Especially if you're running Windows 7.
If you're looking for MP session either dogfight gun fighting or multiplayer campaign drop me a PM to setup when.

If someone is looking for a proper sim, google "DCS A-10"
startup video.

I am using Nvidia, and I will do that.
I used to play a lot of falcon 3 back in my High school days. Used to be on a ladder on AOL, did dial up dogfight tournies. Never seemed to get F4 to work correctly, like starting, with 0 speed, 100ft off the runway. Thats 100ft up. (kinda like the gnomish teleporter error in WoW lol)
