I have an old version of Silent Hunter 4 in which Ubisoft has a Gold Edition which has the so called UBoat Missions - my question is that one of the disclaimers is that as a American Sub Commnder in Campaign mode you can participate in battles or hear radio chatter...

Here's what got my attention from Amazon.com:

"Large-Scale Naval Engagements - Witness epic naval engagements either firsthand or via radio messages and orders from high command"

Is this a nice selling point or is this legit? I did run into a portion of remanants of the Japanese fleet during the Battle of Midway which was about 108 degrees latitude / 30 degrees longitude ( I think). I remember taking out a battleship, a carrier and two destroyers but this was in version 1.4. I guess I got lucky coming across them. But would the Gold edition give Japanese task forces to engage in or should I just look for a Mod to download?

The Gold edition gives you the U-boat war in the Pacific and with the Ops Monsun mod, you'll have the Atlantic war to play in.
I don't think it does anything for the US Pacific campain unless it fixes some technical issues. However, the Mods are an absolute must, eg. TMO, RFB. They use version 1.5 now which is the "Gold Edition" :)

I was looking at mods to install.....would the Jonesoft be my best bet for downloading mods or is there something updated?

The stock traffic layers have some of the battles, poorly scripted, but they're there. If you want historic traffic, large invasion forces, about every battle big and small then you'll want to load a mod called RSRD. Yep, you can watch some large suface battles between ships, planes and hopefully you in the middle of it.

Yes, you'll want JSGME for mods.

Jonesoft or JSGME doesn't download mods, it applies them to SH4 so that you don't have to worry about what folders to copy what files to. You download the mods, then put them in JSGME's mod folder then run JSGME to apply them to SH4 :)
