Many Christmas's I'm reminded of an event in 1914 which came to symbolise the humanity in war. The Christmas Truce. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_truce)
It was not without its incidents, and some firing did occur, but some hundred thousand troops along the Western front from both sides, for one night laid down their weapons and greeted each other, not as enemies, but as fellow men.
It always touches me, and brings a tear to my eye, to think of that moment of peace in a storm of terrible bloodshed.
