I spotted a large tanker close to the southern approaches to England (March '40).I dived, and came as close as 1200 m but there was no flag visible!!!
I decided to attack it although chances were it was American (most of the tankers i meet are americans) as soon as the torpedo hit it, i was sure it was neutral since there were no celebration from the crew ( i use GWX 3.0).

I used the deck gun to finish it and when it went down the green ship appeared in the map.I am sure there were no flag visible.Did i missed it or it has happened to others too?

It was a mine that sunk that Tanker as, you slowly turn away nonchalantly whistleing.

And don't for gods sake look guilty when BdU asks. :03:

No , I have never seen a large tanker with no flag. In fact I have never seen any ship without a flag.
Maybe a glitch in your system.

You will see some ships without flags if you use the Merchant Fleet Mod.

I had a random contact appear on the map that seemed to be moored in a Norwegian fjord. It's a Dithmarschen class tanker, but I'm in visual range and it definitely doesn't have a flag.

No screenshot because I'm running SH3 on my gaming desktop at the moment, but you can see where the flag should fly from on her mainmast and there's nothing there. Just the empty 'spike'.

She's armed, which is very unusual for Feb 1940, but I've sailed within 500m and her gunners haven't opened fire, so I guess she's a neutral. Very strange, though.

I picked up a tanker running fast toward England just south of Ireland and wasn't in the ideal spot, middle of the day in excellent visibility (1940). I took a gamble and surfaced, gunning ahead flank and chasing it for 50km before it came into view on the horizon. I knew I'd have to get in close as I was close to shallow waters and nearing the English coast and diving would just make me drop behind again. Taking the risk I slowly made ground on her ready to dive the moment any deck guns opened up on me, then lo and behold, she just stopped. About the time she should have started zig zagging she just ground to a halt.

I literally came in to about 1000m and imagined myself looking over at the tanker captain with a slightly awestruck look on my face. Did they just abandon ship through cowardice? Did they think I'd bought cookies? I dunno but after about 20 rounds of high explosive whoopass I think I made my intentions clear as she slowly slipped under.

Errm, she had a flag, she was British so I've obviously gone off on a tangent here as I can't remember my original point, making this post irreversibly off topic, sorryyyyyyy.
