View Full Version : Enemy AI

Morning! I realise that what I'm about to ask may, amongst the dedicated realism simmers here, be viewed as being some manner of heresy. Please forgive my wayward soul. :D

I'm interested to know whether there is a way - a low-down, dirty, cheating way - to shut off enemy AI in 'real' campaigns and engagements so that they don't detect you at all. The reasoning is twofold:

I'm back playing SH4 after a reasonably long lull and I want to brush up manual targeting skills that were never very good in the first place; and once you've done the cruiser exercise you've done it and there's little variety to be had in terms of the initial setup. I want to practise, you know, like angles and that. Ahem.
Also, I want to cheat like a complete creature and sink lots of ships, for fun.

Please select whichever explanation above you find least offensive. :arrgh!:

I assume that if there's any way to do this, there are probably two ways, if you take my meaning. Either I can look to switch off the enemy's own ability to detect me; or I can adjust some element of my own boat to make it silent and invisible.

If anyone can help me out with this, I promise it's only to be used for a short period of practice. I also undertake not to come to the forums and brag about great and noble victories whilst using such wretched and underhanded tactics.

Well, one thing you can try is to set the difficulty level on the easiest settings, keeping only manual targeting. This way, you'd have unlimited fuel, unlimited compressed air, no CO2 buildup, unlimited batteries and reloads would occur in a flash. If you're playing the stock version, there isn't much in the way of enemy AI to begin with so, this should make it easy enough without being completely outlandish.

Have a search for the slightly nuclear torpedo mod. And there are some gun mods that'll give you like 1000000 rounds per minute and if you can't find it yourself, I have a AI visual "hack" that should make you invisible to the "enemy" :D

You'll probably also want the speedboat? Someone made subs run like 80 knots...

Superfortress Titan mod iirc? Didn't someone make a fleetboat stuffed with all kinds of über-cannons and all?

You'll find many mods on this forum that should be to your current flavour

On the other hand, if you want to "brush up skills", you could use the Submarine school in SH IV?

If you really want to make the AI as dumb as a box of dried grapes, edit the values in sim.cfg.... just go the opposite direction a realism mod goes with them and it will be just like taking candy from a baby!

Ah, excellent.

/cracks knuckles; rolls up sleeves.

There will be sneakiness, oh yes. :arrgh!:

Thanks for that. One thing, though (and I appreciate it's probably addressed on some previous thread somewhere): looking at the numbers for detection time in each category - what's the maximum figure those entries can handle? I gather from looking around that the sensitivity setting is a modifier for detection at range, and surface factor relates to aspect angle - but if I tweak the main detection time figure I reason there shouldn't be any need to dabble with those. Would that be right?

'Slightly nuclear'? What a troublingly lovely idea. :D

On the other hand, if you want to "brush up skills", you could use the Submarine school in SH IV?Erm. Oh. Yes. Right. Absolutely, right. Yes. That's the honest thing to do, and that's precisely what I'm going to do*.

Fair suggestion.. Although in my case "not much in the way of AI" does represent a significant challenge. I am, not to put too fine a point on it, rubbish. But once I've tired of out-and-out chea... I mean 'applying customised simulation parameters', I'll go with that.

you have come to the right place, to get further help!

So it seems! Thanks for all your replies. :salute:

I think every setting is important as well as time and don't know about the maximum numbers, you'll just have to experiment.

This thing you're trying to do can be as complicated as you like. You could also go into the campaign files and edit the crews of the escorts to be easily distracted by shiny objects....

I'm hoping after a lot of experimentation you figure these relationships out, get bored sinking easy shipping, and make a nice realistic tweak mod.

Most of the nuclear weapons and invisible sub mods have already been made.

Happy Hunting!
