View Full Version : Heavy snow and ice bring travel chaos across UK

Gerald
12-18-10, 09:41 AM
Christmas travellers are facing severe disruption as heavy snow falls across many parts of the UK. Heathrow and Gatwick airports were forced to close all runways amid severe Met Office warnings for parts of London, the Home Counties and Surrey.Roads, railways and airports were all affected across Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England.Airports in Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands are also suffering cancellations and delays. Meanwhile hundreds of drivers were stranded overnight on the M6 motorway in Greater Manchester. Similar conditions in Germany and Italy also saw drivers stuck on icy roads, as temperatures plummeted.

I'm amazed every year when the first Snows fall.
:haha:

Fact: It does happen EVERY year. (Snow and Ice)
Fact: Most people have lived here thier whole lives.
Fact: Every year at the first Snow fall? Some Minds are erased!
(That is based on the observation that people forget Ice on the road will cause you to slide and I count them in the ditches!)
Fact: It's not just young kids doing this!
Fact: We have signs that say Bridges freeze over faster then Roads, but no one seems able to read them?
Fact? Was Ice and Snow one of Natures way of weeding out the Unfit?

If you can not drive on Ice and Snow after living your Whole life in the same area?

I'm tempted to get a Subaru Impreza WRX and a co-driver and have at when the snow falls. Alone in an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme can get a bit hairy, no matter how confident you are. Oh how I wish to be a rally driver...

If you can not drive on Ice and Snow after living your Whole life in the same area?
Don't Drive! I'm sure our friends in Finland will be along any moment to explain the driving conditions there.
my girlfriend always told me that they go fast no matter what the roads are like there. :dead:

(Hmmm a new Ice show I'm sure!)
:yep:

But I think everyone understands what I mean.
If you spent your whole life in Ohio where I'm at?
And it does snow every year?
Why in the name of all that is Holy do you
FORGET HOW TO DRIVE ON THIS STUFF!

Let's see,
I fall down on the way to the Car cause it's slippery.
That seems to ring no bells for the "Ones that should not survive".
Car won't stop when I hit the brake!
That seems to ring no bells for the "Ones that should not survive".
It's the weathers fault!
BS! You grew up here! When did the weather change? It does this EVERY Year!
That seems to ring no bells for the "Ones that should not survive".

Well, when my mother visited Phoenix this year she was detoured around a serious pileup on the freeway. The pileup was caused when a thunderstorm rolled through and everyone forgot how to drive. All that from a rain storm?? My God, man. The Midwest would kill them. :haha:

One tiny thin sprinkling of snow here. But ice...yeah, plenty of that stuff. Will make the walk into work at half six tomorrow interesting no doubt. Almost wound up sliding down Church hill on my arse back in Jan when we had the snow, and for Suffolk, land of the flat, it's a pretty steep hill.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=52.154906,1.60197&spn=0.00235,0.006866&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=52.154906,1.60197&panoid=e2bSeKE-qbb3Nv42DeXGog&cbp=12,279.26,,0,13.44

The pavements will get sand on them no doubt...but probably not until after I've slid into work which is just round the corner, so perhaps the momentum will deliver me there. :hmmm:

Snow leaves travellers stranded at Heathrow and Gatwick! Thousands of travellers have been stranded at Heathrow airport overnight, and hundreds more at Gatwick, as snow continues to disrupt much of the UK.There will be no flight arrivals at Heathrow on Sunday and only a handful of departures, while many Gatwick flights are affected.Problems persist at airports UK-wide, while the Met Office is warning of icy roads across much of England and Wales.More heavy snow is expected in eastern Scotland and north-east England.Up to 10cm of snow are expected in these areas, and up to 20cm in hilly areas.Forecasters said the UK was hit by extremely low temperatures overnight, with most parts of the country struggling to get above minus 5C, while fresh snow fell in eastern Scotland and north-east England.

I get fed up of the people moaning.

Some do not seem to realise the amount of snow that has fallen in a short space of time, eg the stuff that has shut Heathrow and Gatwick.

It easy to say "THey knew it was coming" but a forecast is just that. The forecast where I live has said heavy snow and then there has been none.

If you get 8 inches of snow dumpe on you and in freezing temperatures you can plow all you want but it has to be constant.

Heathrow has the machines I was watching them on the news yesterday.

Also people are told "Don't travel unless you have to" but hey people have to do their christmas shopping....deserve to get stuck.

Fact: These wintery conditions in the UK are NOT the norm, the trend has been for warmer and wetter winters. If the government had spent billions on salt and snow clearing kit and then we had a mild winter they would have been accused of wasting money. Also take a look at France and Germany, they are not doing much better either.

I really wish Brits would stop moaning and just effing get on with it. I hope moaning is made an olympic sport with various categories. We would be garunteed golds. Then again we would teach everyone else in the world and they would do it better, then we could moan again how we used to be great at a sport....

Partial chaos in Germany the past days as well. However, in my home town Münster, with lots and lots of snow and ice during the past 2 weeks - it is amazing to see how many people still ride their bicycles in snow that by falling down or moving it around reaches heights of up to 20 cm! In other pictures from other German cities, bicycles are alomost erased from the public sight. Not so here.

I plan to buy myself a second bike next year before winter, a not so special one but with very wide spike-tyres. Currently, spike tyres are sold out everywhere. I had one belly-crash so far this winter, on bike.

However, the paradoxical effect of two white winters in a row now is only local weather, no global climate trend. Climatologists already rate 2010 as one of the globally warmest years of the past 100 years, it could even become the third-warmest once the analysis is finished.

Not much snow round here in either, we had a light covering yesterday, not much and everything is working as normal. Even the local council got the gritters out before the snow hit.

Saying all that, I'm still waiting on a parcel I ordered 1 week ago, been tracking it via Amazons site and they said it would be delivered by the 14th. Well its 19th of december right now and I'm still waiting. Least I am not the only one, with around a 4 million parcel backlog.

(Just checked, my parcel is still in Warrington. Might just go there and pick it up myself.)

The problem at the airports isn't the amount of snow because your right, the ploughs can shift it very quickly....the problem is the below freezing temperature that turns it immediately into ice...the ploughs can't lower their blades enough for fear of destroying the runway surface.

I've recently taken to collecting 1/72 die cast aircraft and out of seventeen separate orders in the past fortnight have only received six thus far.

I heard on the news today that Stockholm airport can be cleared of snow and ice in approximately ten minutes....I'd love to know how because we may be able to learn something from them there.

Stranded traveler: 'All I want for Christmas is to hug my daughter'

London (CNN) -- Lisa Suarez's voice breaks as she stands in the snow outside London's Heathrow airport, unable to get a flight home to Dallas, Texas.

"It's very hard," she says. "All I want for Christmas is to hug my daughter."

She and her family are among hundreds of thousands of people stranded by "freak weather conditions" that dumped unexpected tons of snow on Europe this weekend, snarling flight schedules at the continent's busiest airports.Heathrow planned to cancel all arrivals Sunday, but later said it might allow three planes to land. A dozen long-haul flights are scheduled to take off Sunday night, spokesman Andrew Teacher said. He did not say which ones.

Depends for what, in mild temperatures it will speed up melting and make it easier to scrape off the ice. However, even at -20 celsius, it will still melt through the ice and give you increased traction. I use it on my driveway during the winter.

The EU has heavily criticised European airports for failing to deal with recent freezing weather, which has left thousands of travellers stranded.Around 1,000 flights were cancelled across the continent on Tuesday. European transport commissioner Siim Kallas urged airports to "get serious" about planning, and labelled them a "weak link" in the infrastructure.

London (CNN) -- Airline and rail operators were making progress Wednesday clearing a backlog of passengers stranded after heavy snow across Europe threw travel plans into chaos.London's Heathrow Airport, one of the worst-affected hubs, opened its second runway Tuesday evening, easing overcrowding in the airport's terminals where thousands of passengers had faced days of delays.

"We had a good start this morning. Both runways are opened and taxis are waiting in their stands," a spokesman for the airport operator BAA said.

I had an interesting read yesterday, about the problems in air traffic. I only say: bad preparation, bad training of the winter crews, bad equipment, and bad imagination (why should you expect ice and snow in winter, eh?) .

I read the comparsion between the airports in Frankfurt and Stockholm. In Frankfurt, the winter service needs 30 minutes to de-ice one runway with their full group of vehicles and servicemen. In Stockholm, they need - world record holder they are - 5 minutes. They run a swift ballet with their deicing vehicles, which is better coordinated and moving faster than anywhere else.

Imagine: while the Germans would have cleaned one half of the first runway, the Swedes already would have cleared all three of Frankfurt's runways completely!

The article said Stockholm is inviting other European airports to take classes in winter services there. :DL

The immense problems with the German rail services, are selfmade. Too much resources and reserves were killed in order to prepare for bringing it to the stockmarket. Too much money got sunk in prestigious mamoth projects, money that was not spend for maintaining proper train and railnet maintenance. And the S-Bahn in Berlin - don't get me started. I assume in many third world countries they have more capable train systems than in Berlin.

It's not *looks out of window* doing anything out there now though, clear starry skies. One of the things about being slap bang next to the sea I guess.

It must fall on London to be official, every where else dose not count. I've be glad when all this damn blasted snow & ice melts, hate it.

Lazy sods around here not cleaning there pathways should be fined £1000 in my book. So much for community spirit in mucking in & helping out.

Snow has to actually fall, lying snow doesn't count but then again the bookies were probably on the right side of the profit line.

Boxing Day started exceptionally cold with -16C (10F) being recorded in Pershore, Worcestershire. In fact if December continues as cold as it has been so far, it will be the United Kingdom's coldest December since records began in 1910. However, with temperatures in most areas set to rise from Tuesday this is still not guaranteed. While this weekend has been visibly white for many of us across the country with plenty of lying snow, only the cities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Lincoln, as well as parts of North Yorkshire, had an official white Christmas this year with fresh falling snow on Christmas Day.

Some passengers spent a second night stranded at airports.Anger is mounting in New York and New Jersey over the slow pace of snow removal following the major storms which brought the region to a halt.Major thoroughfares in Manhattan have been cleared, but large parts of the city have yet to be ploughed. Many residents are stuck in their homes unable to get to work, and piles of snow are hindering ambulances.New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn called the clean-up operation the worst in memory."We're hearing reports from all over of people not even having seen a plough by the afternoon of the day after," Ms Quinn told reporters. "This is a level of lack of clean-up that I really can't recall."

You do realise that we usually get the US East Coasts weather about a week or so after they've had it. So...there's a reasonably good chance that General Winter will be returning in force within a fortnight?

Although I could be rather wrong in that, so in two weeks you can quote this and say "Oberon...where's that snow?!" to which I will probably reply "Driven off by curry farts from Newcastle." :O::03:

While the storms weren't related, at the same time we here in CA got mammoth amounts of rain. Here in San Diego we got enough rain in this last storm that puts us 5" above the yearly average already. Granted heavy rain is nothing new to Europe, the terrain is better suited to handle it. Since the state is on fire (literally from firestorms) half of the year it leaves no vegetation to soak up the rain. The mudslides in some places were mind boggling. One person had his entire first floor of his 2 story house completely filled with mud, looking at it from the street it now looks like a single story house. This past storm (which coincided with the ones in Europe) wreaked havoc and caused massive amounts of damage, most parts of CA can't handle 10"-15" of rain all at once.

Gerald
12-30-10, 03:11 AM
It is clear that it is not related but for some it still came as a surprise, and the authorities, "are not familiar" with this type of snow amounts as is normal in countries such as Sweden or Finland

NI Water have said it could be next week before all homes and businesses in Northern Ireland are reconnected. Ministers in NI are to hold an emergency meeting to discuss how to help the 36,000 people still affected as it emerged that two hospitals have experienced supply problems.South Tyrone Hospital in Dungannon has been relying on the NI Fire Service and bottled water. The state-owned company, which is the sole provider of water and sewerage services in Northern Ireland, said an unprecedented number of leaks caused by the thaw following the long period of FREEZING WEATHER had been putting "big pressure" on its systems.

Last month was the coldest December documented for the UK since nationwide records began 100 years ago, the Met Office has confirmed. For central England, it was the second coldest December since 1659.However, the first analysis released of global temperatures shows 2010 was one of the warmest years on record. The UK's harsh weather was caused by anomalously high air pressure that blocked mild westerly winds and brought cold air south from the Arctic. The provisional monthly Met Office figures show the UK temperature averaged -1C - a long way below the previous coldest December, in 1981, which registered -0.1C.The December average for the century-long series is 4.2C.It was also the coldest calendar month since February 1986, the Met Office reports.

"It's been an exceptional month, there's no question about that - it will go down in history as one to remember," said chief meteorologist Ewen McCallum.

"Our records go back to 1910 and it's certainly the coldest since then, so it's the coldest December in 100 years," he told BBC News.
