no baby Jesus in front of the court house.
But you don't get to push your religion and only your religion in the public square. If you want a nativity scene on public land, fine. Does someone else, and everyone else, get equal access to put up their holiday display? If so, fine. Otherwise, go decorate your house, your church, your business, your car, or anything else that is your property.

Not so easy razark. In Philadelphia a open market was asked by the city to change the name of the open market that is erected every year for Christmas. It was called Christmas Village. They changed it to Holiday Village. A few days later the market told the mayor they are changing it back to Christmas Village. There was enough upset to warrant that. It is not as cut and dry as you like to think. Every year it is the same attack. Same song and dance.

Christ is the Jewish Messiah, The Word made flesh known as The Living Torah. Unfortunately nothing in the bible indicates any commandment from God to worship a birthday on the 25th of December. This date as with most of it's practices are a mixture of pagan and so called christian traditions. Most who study surmise He was most likely born around the time or on Yom Teruah. During the fall season but I wouldn't think much later as I can't imagine that even Ceasar would cause people to travel for the census in the dead of winter.
This tradition is on a Sabbath. People will follow their traditions rather than how God would have them keep Sabbath.

I have a big problem with nativity scenes. Not because of the pushing of religion, but because they are mostly inaccurate according to their own book. Can't really take it seriously if the nativity people can't even read the directions. :D

Yeah, I know. I understand there are valid issues when it comes to using public space to uphold one religious tradition to the exclusion of others... but as far as what people say to each other this time of year in terms of season's greetings... eh, I can't see the point in being upset.
My rule of thumb is, if I don't know a person well enough to know what they celebrate, I say "Happy Holidays." It covers everything, and even if they don't celebrate anything of a religious nature, it's very unlikely that they are not getting a "holiday" of some kind because they're going to be out of school or have a couple extra days off work. If someone wants to get peeved at me for not saying "Merry Christmas" that's their problem.
As for what people say to me, I don't care. Happy this, merry that, they are wishing me well in whatever way they can according to their own understanding of what the "season" is all about. I'm not going to be offended because someone told me to have a happy version of the wrong freakin' thing. :D

Merry Christmas, DarkFish. It seems you get me all wrong. My intention was definitely not to belittle or condemn it, and how is it even possible not to recognize a festivity? Best I could do is not recognize the reason for it.
I'm not against christmas, you can have all holidays you want the way you want them. Besides, "christmas" is a holiday in my religion as well.
I didn't mean anything with my post, except what it says: that I find it amusing that christmas historically is a largely Pagan holiday, while most christians believe they are in fact celebrating some christian holiday. This is a purely cultural/historical/religious thing, as I'm quite sure that all christians pay homage to the christian god on christmas and not to any of the Pagan gods, so on a personal level it's still a christian holiday.

*WARNING--SPOILERS!!--DANGER WILL ROBINSON!*

the dumpster and the landfill and the shredder and the inferno and all the toys were safe and home again and in the proper boxes and although I had gotten a little misty-eyed in a couple places I had yet to shed a proper tear. I THOUGHT IT WAS OVER.
But NOOOOOOOOO.
So, yeah: :wah: :wah: :wah: :wah: :D
And now to throw a little Christmas into the mix - after the first and second movies had come out on DVD, my best friend told me she'd never seen either of them. The first one, for some reason, didn't pique her interest. But she saw a trailer or whatever for the second one, I guess on another DVD, and decided she'd like to see it, only she wanted to see the first one before that so she knew the whole story.
By this time I had both movies, so we got together and watched them and she enjoyed them both immensely and we both had a couple of good cries and a lot of laughs. At some point I confessed that I had a bit of a crush on Buzz Lightyear (er... there may have been alcohol involved), the thing was I really liked Buzz best when he first came out of the box and didn't know he was a toy and thought he was a real space ranger. I'd been worried that we wouldn't get that in the second movie but, whaddya know, they managed to work in the dim-bulb Buzz "right out of the box" for me. This led to a short period of her teasing me about having a crush on what was not only a toy, but an imaginary toy in a kids' movie.
Anyway a few months go by and it's coming on to Christmas and one day my friend walks into the office where we both work, looks at me, and cracks up laughing. So I say, "what?" and she says, "oh nothing, I went out Christmas shopping yesterday." She doesn't say another word about it.
So come Christmas I stop by her place for a bit to visit and exchange gifts. The gifts are duly exchanged and opened and mine are very nice and to my taste but nothing out of the ordinary, certainly nothing that would make someone crack up laughing just thinking about it. So I figure, whatever, she was just having a goofy day that day.
After a while I get up to go and we're saying our goodbyes and I'm almost out the door when suddenly she says, "Oh wait I forgot one of your gifts!" and reaches behind something and pulls out this box all wrapped up. So now I'm thinking "aha" and I open it and we both crack up laughing because it's a 12" high, talking Buzz Lightyear doll with expandable wings and blinking lasers and sound effects and everything. He stands guard over my living room from the top of a bookshelf to this very day and, as you can imagine, is also one reason why the person who gave it to me is my best friend.
Anyway... once again I went into this movie wondering if it would be nothing but the "I know I'm a toy" Buzz Lightyear who is fine but not as endearing. And once again, Pixar throws me for a loop and gives me...
BUZZ LIGHTYEAR IN SPANISH MODE! Ay, caramba!
Totally awesome for that reason and many others and this is probably my favorite Toy Story of them all. Definitely gonna add it to my collection. :yeah:

Christmas is actually a pagan celebration. Christ was not born on the 25th Dec the Christians used the pagan celebration to celebrate the birth of Christ but they know its not the correct date - just like Easter has nothing to do with the death of Christ they borrowed the pagan celebration of Easter the God of fertility and the symbol of the rabbit ( rabbit = fertility) to mark the death of Christ. No one knows the correct date when Christ was born or when he died, except maybe the rabbis have the dates kept in some secret scrolls but they ain't saying anything cause they don't worship Christ - mas :haha:
So anyways Merry Christmas - I always celebrate Christmas and New Years time to cook the pig on a spit and drink some beers.

There are many kind of Christians.
Ones who jump the bandwagon because they think it's the trend and cool and subject being fooled and misled(If many people believe it it must be true! or is it?!)
. . .
Ones who believe Jesus is the Messiah because he's easy to believe anything and subject being fooled and misled
. . .
Ones who wish for miracles and figured Jesus is the only way to worldly abundance and excesses!
. . .
Ones who started being a naive believer but went on to build a real relationship with God and know God personally however little. These are the people who would endure anything because they simply know what they believe in. These are the witnesses and much are expected of them. Among the rarest and few.
. . .
Ones who believe because they are using their common sense(sensibility) after gaining much knowledge and weighing many known factors. These are the wisest people but unfortunately the rarest.
. . .
Those who believe Christ is their savior for being stupid and insist on believing it without seeing anything or experiencing anything substantial to substantiate their belief but endure everything and keep believing until the end of their lives even when they struggle with doubts all their life especially when life is pressing on them. These are the gold, truly blessed people.
God may not be for everyone but Christmas is certainly is!
Merry Christmas and happy holiday to you all! Enjoy the blessings of life regardless of your belief this holiday season!

The Parable of the Sower.
The seed = the kingdom.
The hard ground:
Someone who hears but does not understand the Word. Making it hard for them to believe.
The Stony ground:
pictures a man who professes delight with the Word; however, his heart is not changed, and when trouble arises, his so-called faith quickly disappears.
The thorny ground
depicts one who seems to receive the Word, but whose heart is full of riches, pleasures, and lusts; the things of this world take his time and attention away from the Word, and he ends up having no time for it.
The good ground
portrays the one who hears, understands, and receives the Word—and then allows the Word to accomplish its result in his life. The man represented by the “good ground” is the only one of the four who is truly saved, because salvation’s proof is fruit

December always airs something relaxing and fun and happy about it. It's the one month I'd happily choose over any other. I mean if we could do just with a single month in a year, you see year end bonuses would become a monthly thing . . . .LOL. . .and we would suddenly live to over a thousand years. . .

I feel offended by the people who feel offended when they hear "merry christmas". Seriously, it's only a phrase, no try to convince anybody that Santa or Jesus exists or forcing someone to believe. Hell, I don't believe in the easter bunny, but i wish people happy Easter! If I would live in a black neighbourhood and people would wish me happy kwanzaa I also wouldn't mind - or happy festivus if you live in certain parts of Queens ;). **** it, let the people have the celebrations they want.
On christmas day, I will be at my parents-in-law. There will only be outspoken atheists/agnostics there. We give presents to each other, eat christmas dinner and wish each other happy christmas! Later we may have some drinks and a smoke while looking at the christmas tress! It's just a ****ing tradition, people need to relax.

Christmas isn't so much of a religious holiday anymore as it is an excuse to get stinking drunk with the family and watch Bond movies all afternoon. And good food. And receiving presents. And trying to scoot around the kitchen on the nephew's new Tonka truck.
And passing out awkwardly on the end table (the one that shall not have anything on it except 'clean' magazines (no SI or Freak Brothers :nope:) and decorative flower arrangements). :yeah:
No end tables or decorative flower arrangements were harmed during the manufacture of this half-baked anecdote. :smug:
I wish you all a happy and Blessed Christmas, non Christians can celebrate Xmas and Santa Claus, Christians (I am one) can celebrate Christmas and the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (the real meaning of Christmas).:yep:

Most socalled Christians in the West are not suddenly any Christian at all just when all year long they do not give a dman for Christian ethics, but once a year suddenly running into the church and singing "Holy Night".
However, no matter our individual religious orientation, or lack of, for most of us Westerners, Christmas holds childhood memories, and has a sentimental and social meaning that most of us cannot deny. Granmted, for me it has no religious meaning, but it holds plenty of childhood memories - and very good and warm ones indeed. If I would have had children, I would have Christmas with the family, too, and try hard to make it something they would remember in later years, when they have left home.
That is why a convinced and confessing atheist like me nevertheless can wish all of you a Mery Christmas - and indeed mean it it serious. :salute:
And culture deniers and PC relativisers and hypersensitive Muslims and missionary atheists not liking us to stick with this habit - to hell with all four of them.

Jim, you remind me of a very old Doctor Who episode (The Chase, from season 3 [1966], I think). On top of the Empire State building a guided tour is going on. A visitor from Texas says something to effect of "Ah've nevah ben on top of a buildin' this hah before", and the New York tour guid looks at him and says "Youse shuah does tahk funny!"
As not offend; Merry Xmas as amended by the PC brigade!
Hello.
I wanted to send a greeting but it is so difficult in today's world to
know exactly what to say without offending someone.
Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes
for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress,
nonaddictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday,
practised with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or
secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious/secular
persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice
religious or secular traditions at all.
I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and
medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally
accepted calendar year 2011, but not without due respect for the
calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society
have helped make our country great, not to imply that the United Kingdom
(apologies to those of a republican persuasion) is necessarily greater
than any other country, and without regard to the race, creed, colour,
age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the
wishee.
Best regards,
Kaleun
By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:
This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely
transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no
promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for
her/himself or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is
revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted
to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for
a period of one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday
greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement
of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the
wisher.
Disclaimer: No trees were harmed in the sending of this message;
however, a significant number of electrons were slightly inconvenienced.

Can't say I recall the episode Steve but your example is a good one....you only need travel 5 mile down the road from here and the dialect becomes uncannily like cockney rhyming slang "wiys kiys are thiys"? but as we well know the same can be said of so many countries.

I (state your name) do solemnly swear that I shall not rest until Christmas becomes a grotesque bastardization of its original Christian meaning, ripe with pagan symbolism and secular rituals and is replaced by a thinly veiled worship of capitalism in which soulless corporations inexplicably compel a mindless populace to part with an obscene portion of their personal wealth for a bunch of crap that no one really needs in the first place.

Though I must remark that historically speaking, "...its original Pagan meaning, ripe with Christian symbolism.." would be more correct;)
One thing most of us can probably agree on though, is that Christmas nowadays for most people is more a cultural festivity (with some religion) than a religious one.
