View Full Version : I'm not sure I ever made an introduction yet.
Here's my intro that I use on other forums usually, so here goes:
Hello, the name's Destiny. I'm an 18 year old American high school student, gamer, Teenagist, political activist, and web designer. I have played hundreds of games for different platforms and collect video game consoles. My collection currently consists of a Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, GameCube, Dreamcast, SNES, NES, and Sega Game Gear.
My favorite video game console would have to be the Nintendo GameCube. My favorite video games are SWAT 3, StarCraft, Warcraft III, Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition, Diablo II, Diablo, Star Wars: X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Age of Empires, Resident Evil: REmake, Resident Evil, Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence, Descent, Descent 2, Descent FreeSpace, Geist, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, MechWarrior 3, MechWarrior 4: Vengeance, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, Rogue Spear, Total Annihilation, Civilization II: Test of Time, Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, Tribes 2, Unreal Tournament 2004, Half-Life, and Left 4 Dead.
I'm emo and my favorite band is Paramore. My role models are Hayley Williams and my uncle. My favorite movies are the original Star Wars trilogy, Inception, Twilight, Casino Royale, Alien, and Aliens. My favorite TV shows are the new Battlestar Galactica, LOST, Firefly, Stargate, Star Trek, Andromeda, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Farscape, Babylon 5, and a few others. My favorite books are The Terrible Hours by Peter Maas, StarCraft: Ghost - Nova by Keith DeCandido, and the Star Wars: Young Jedi Knight books by Kevin J. Anderson. I'm currently reading Twilight by Stephanie Meyer and Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry.
After high school I'm going to further my education through college and become a high school counselor. It may not sound like a job most people want, but it's what I want to do, I like helping people, and as it turns out, I'm good at it. I am the leader of the Teenagist Party of the United States, the only political party dedicated teen rights. I'm also a strong advocate of lowering the voting age so that thirteen year olds get one-fourth vote and sixteen year olds get 1/2 vote. I speak English, German, Spanish, and I'm learning Lithuanian. My philosophy is that knowledge is in fact power and that we should all strive to further our knowledge, as well as our physical prowess.
The first message board I ever joined was the official Code Lyoko forum, there I found out about a fan-made Code Lyoko forum that was simply called 'Code Lyoko Forum' and quickly became an adminsitrator there. I later joined a forum called 'The Animated World', which was a forum about anime. Again I was entrusted with administrative powers by the head admin. Later I became an administrator on Explosmertacular and Planet Mac. I've administrated and moderated many other forums as well.
Recently I have created my own forums. On November 11, 2010 I teamed up with girl gamer, Lightning, and together we created Gameforia, a video game forum. Gameforia quickly grew popular and soar high with members and posts. Recently we've hit a spout of inactivity, as my fellow administrator has seemingly been too busy with high school and playing Vindictus.
On November 21, 2010 I created Religious Boards, a forum dedicated to discussing religion. Unlike Gameforia, Religious Boards is off to a rough start. We have only have a handful of members, however I'm not giving up on it, it's still pretty new. On November 22, 2010, I created my latest forum, Lifestyle Boards. Lifestyle Boards is in the same situation as Religious Boards, as in it could also use some more members, but I'm also not giving up on it.
I am a moderator or administrator on a lot of forums, and a normal member on even more. Aside from my own, some of the forums I frequent are Melonie Mac, the Duke Nukem Reloaded forum, LiveWire, Gaia Online, Giant Bomb, swtor.com, Best Buy Community, Debate Politics, Playfire, TheTwilightSaga.com, Subsim, Cheap Ass Gamer, AskMen, AimGirl, Apolyton, Virtual Teen, TeenSpot, GoTeen, Space Sim Central, Space.com, PSU, Neoseeker, GirlGamer.com, Politics Forum, NSider2, TechRadar, and others, just ask and I'll give you a full list.
At this time I'm currently single, and I just got out of a relationship. I'll only date individuals 13 to say 29 (maybe a little older, depending on the person). I enjoy playing video games, posting on forums, helping other people, and bettering myself. When it comes to religion I'm a Christian. Well, that's about it for now.

These are a favorite of a few here at SS. Any interest in Tokio Hotel? My daughter likes Paramore.
My favorite movies are the original Star Wars trilogy Second only to Gladiator for me. But yeah, showing my age. I watched these when they were first out in the theaters waaaayyyyyy back in 1977. My youngest watched them with me not long ago. She loves the trilogy. Funny how through the years these movies are still very popular and the characters are still evident in todays world via advertising, Halloween costumes, etc.

Gee, I did some Googling on the "Teenagist Party" and found this posted at Livewire, one of the forums the OP says he frequents:
The Teenagist Party was formed to work towards full equal rights for individuals the age of thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen. We hope to accomplish the following:
-Full equal rights for teens under the United States Constitution, as well as federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
-Either classify anyone thirteen-years-old or older as an adult or give teenagers their own separate legally recognized classification.
-Bring universal suffrage to teenagers by making the voting age 13. 13 year olds get 1/4 vote and 16 year olds get 1/2 vote.
-Lower the drinking age to atleast 18.
-The ability for teenage individuals to sign legally binding documents.
-Lower the age of consent to 13 with other individuals between the ages of 13-21.
-Enact laws preventing public schools from ever implementing a school uniform. -Enact laws making it illegal for public schools to beat their students.
(Emphasis mine.)

I get what you're saying, but puberty is not something that happens overnight. Most people have not finished it at 13 (some have not even started it).
Plus, while sexual attraction to a young-but-physically-matured girl may be natural, that doesn't make it right to act on it.

"Age of consent" does not refer to dating. Legally speaking it refers to sexual relations, or age of consent to marry, which it is assumed will include sexual relations.

No, you said that 18 is considered a teenager. This is not true. An 18-year-old in the United States of America had legally attained the age of majority with exception of the states of Alabama, Nebraska and Mississippi. Accordingly, even though the suffix -teen appears at the end of the name, the same person is opened to a series of legal and civil liabilities pertaining to romatic engagement with minors.
So let me get this right... you want to date a 13-year-old only if she's hot because you like her personality?

That reminds me of a conversation The Frau and I had with her daughter who was in highschool at the time.
Every year, in Virginia, the topic of school uniforms comes up. Her daughter was absolutely against it. Wearing a uniform would stifle her individuality.
I told her that she currently wears a school uniform.
"No I don't!!"
Yes, you do. You wear exactly what your peer group wears and nothing else. The colour, style and brand name must match what all your friends wear. When you peer group changes how they dress, you follow theirs lead and change also. Where is the individuality when you wear only what your peer group wants you to wear?

School uniforms do kill individuality. And it's not like there's just one group, there's preps, emos, jocks, cheerleaders, geeks, band, scene, stoners, and other groups all separate. Then there are the rebels who just wear and do whatever they want.

Yeah, he absolutely doesn't want adults to have sex with kids. He just wants kids to be free to consent to have sex with adults, without the adults getting hassled by The Man over it. That's totally different. :shifty:

Sorry.
But an 18 year old Male can not have a non-sexual relationship with a 13 year old.
In theory it could happen.
But RARELY does.
I was 18 and dated a 14 year old.
I know what happens and how it happens!
I have a great Son and Daughter from that time in my life.
But I'll be damned if I agree it was OK in the first place.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure I ever properly introduced myself.
I'm Frau Kaleun, and I frequent places like Subsim and my cubicle at work and the local martial arts dojo. I'm also the founder of a new political party, the Frau Kaleun Hits People Over The Head With An Angry Wombat Party.
Our platform is simple and to the point: we advocate the legalization of Frau Kaleun hitting people over the head with an angry wombat.
Now, I'm not saying I would ever hit anyone over the head with an angry wombat. I certainly do not view the act of hitting people over the head with ill-tempered Australian mammals in a favorable light. However I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to pursue the kinds of relationships where other people might find themselves getting hit over the head in that fashion, provided the other people involved are the kinds of people whose noggins appear worthy (to me) of a good hard smack with a small marsupial who is already having a really bad day. All I want is to give other people the freedom to be hit over the head with an angry wombat, by me, should they choose to engage in that activity.

I'm with OLC and most others here, you only have to look at the average 13yo girl then look at typical 18yo man to see the difference in maturity is vast, a 13yo girl is just that, a girl!! A man does not go out with a 13yo.:nope:

School uniforms do kill individuality.
Not at all, anymore than military uniforms or pilots' uniforms. I attended a private shool for awhile, and some of us were highly individualistic. It's not the clothes that make an individual.
You are too young to understand this, yet you think that young teens should be given full adult rights?

I looked at the Teenagist website, and I've changed my mind. Everyone should be declared an adult at age thirteen. Additionally, everyone should have to move out of their parents' house, get a job and act like an adult at age thirteen.
Good luck with that.

This. So Much this.
Even for being one of the "younger" members of subsim at 20, I completely agree with this. In fact, uniforms would be a great boon to education anywhere, it eliminates another arm of the "class system" that has been mentioned to exist in schools. It's not about creating fascists, it's about improving performance and enhancing focus.

She then tried to explain that they are all acting as individuals.... together. :damn:It's not necessarily about "individuality" per se, but more about connecting yourself to a certain group, as you say. However, your daughter is also right in that a group as a whole can often want to be "individual": independent and clearly distinguishable.
Me myself, I'm a metalhead. Metalheads have a pretty distinct culture, with different clothing, hair and even behaviour codes. Being forced to wear a uniform would severely limit the possibility for me to affirm my membership to this group.
BTW, what is the advantage of school uniforms? I can't think of any.

BTW, what is the advantage of school uniforms? I can't think of any.
So everybody is equal, nobody gets picked on (in school) for not having the latest trainers (sneakers to the merry-cans :)) or clothes. It doesn't always work but it's a good starter.
My wife is a teacher at my old school, where uniform didn't really get a look in after your first year - now they all have exactly the same, there is a fund for the less well-off kids (most of them, it's a very deprived area!). Aside from the uniform the school has returned to a house-system with hard fought competitions. Because of these two things, and a few smaller adjustments, the school now has a waiting list where just five years ago it was very much not a popular school to be at!
Pupils are allowed to be individuals - for the 75% of the week they're not in school, plus the 14/15 weeks holiday they get per year. Kids need discipline and structure and uniform is just one part of that.
Oh, look at me being all serious for a change! :nope:
frau kaleun
12-08-10, 11:03 AM
BTW, what is the advantage of school uniforms? I can't think of any.
They make it much harder for kids to use clothes as status symbols for the purposes of excluding, bullying, ridiculing other kids who don't wear the preferred styles, brand names, etc. They remove "what everybody else is wearing" as a subject of focus and concern and encourage kids to come up with other, more clever ways of expressing their individuality (which, if they wish, they can still do via clothing when they are "off the clock" anyway).
They can save parents a great deal of time, money, and hassle, since buying school clothes becomes a relatively simple matter and one that is less likely to be accompanied by sounds of whining, begging, sulking, and adolescent threats of "If I can't have [x] I'll just die!"
From an adult point of view, where I work I didn't have to wear a "medical office" uniform when I started since I'm not a member of the medical staff. A few years into it they brought up the idea of having all the staff dress to the same standard and offered to purchase the first set of approved clothing for us.
I was dead set against it, not for "individuality" reasons but because when I took the job I'd spent a good bit of my own money buying the appropriate "business casual" wardrobe that was required at the time, which I would have no use for if I didn't wear it to work.
The majority wanted the uniforms, though, and that's what we went with. It wasn't long before I came around and I wouldn't go back now if I could. Putting together an outfit five mornings a week no longer requires the kind of thought and planning that it used to and instead of making a weekly trip to the drycleaners, everything I wear to work now goes in the washer/dryer with the rest of my stuff. Over the long run it has saved me a lot of time, energy, and money. Even if I buy my own uniforms to supplement what my employer provided, it's still much cheaper than keeping a business casual wardrobe together.
There are no real advantages to having a school uniform. Those who think "it will put an end to bullying" are just naive. What do you think that just because your high school has a uniform everyone loves each other and nobody will ever say or do anything that is inappropriate?
edit
Would you rather have someone say "your shirt is so 2009, get with the times" or "you're a ****ing faggot who..." and say things that are actually hurtful and cause you serious emotional distress and possibly depression (and along with it more teen suicides)? Thank god school uniforms aren't used in America (except in some private schools).

Nobody claimed it would put an end to bullying. That's a strawman argument. It removes clothes as status symbols and a basis for bullying in an environment where distractions like who's wearing what should be minimized. You're there to learn, not to take part in a fashion show.
There are no disadvantages to requiring uniforms.

High school isn't really about learning. It's about:
-Discovering who you are and what you want to do with your life after high school.
-Chillin with friends.

Sure, mathematics may be useful to an extent, but they teach one-sided versions of history and most of their science information is totally outdated. Did you know they still teach that there are only 9 primary objects in the solar system? What the ****? I mean there are 8 known planets and 5 known dwarf planets, with several other dwarf planets which are unconfirmed but the evidence supports they exist. Half the stuff they teach in both social and physical science classes is either biased or wrong.

What about the numerous school districts that already require them?
In 2007–08, about 18 percent of public school principals reported that their school required students to wear uniforms. In 1999–2000, the percentage of principals who reported that their school required students to wear uniforms was 12 percent.
Also, in 2007–08, approximately 55 percent of public school principals reported that their school enforced a strict dress code, an increase from 47 percent in 1999-2000.

We're not talking about tax brackets, we're discussing uniform policy. Apples and oranges.
A student is a student is a student. Regardless of income bracket, teenagers are going to be teenagers. Distractions are distractions. Cliques are cliques. Geographic location/income differentials will play in the population count of each clique...but they're going to be there.
The advent of a uniform policy defends against the outward display of clique affiliation (being an intern in the police department of the city I attend college at, I think "gang affiliation"); cutting down on propensity for distraction in the form of scuffles or heated argument/verbal disagreements. It can also be argued that a uniform policy would protect against the possibility of teachers showing preference for upper-class students...the difference would be less obvious because everyone would be wearing the same clothes, same colors. Because, let's face it, most of us tend to think more highly of well-dressed individuals, no?

The advent of a uniform policy defends against the outward display of clique affiliation (being an intern in the police department of the city I attend college at, I think "gang affiliation"); cutting down on propensity for distraction in the form of scuffles or heated argument/verbal disagreements. It can also be argued that a uniform policy would protect against the possibility of teachers showing preference for upper-class students...the difference would be less obvious because everyone would be wearing the same clothes, same colors. Because, let's face it, most of us tend to think more highly of well-dressed individuals, no?
The poor people have school uniforms usually because they can't afford clothing.
In the real world you'd never have to worry about what colleges do or don't require if you believe high school is for "chillin with friends" instead of learning.
Few things of value are learned from classes in high school.

We don't learn by having things spewed at us, we learn through discourse and rhetoric. Uniforms simply level the playing field of the forum. Those who can't hang will raise cane about it "killing the individual".

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter if uniforms exist or not. I certainly HOPE that by the time I have kids and they're going to school, it's a fixture. If not, that's fine too. Those who want to learn will learn, those who don't will focus on the minutiae.

No. Just no.
Other countries will advance technologically. We'll buy or inherit those technologies or ideas; but it's going to be a long time until America is once again an innovator. That's how the cookie crumbles. Nations rise and fall. We've been on top for 200 years, I'd say we've had a good run...but as I stated previously, we've signed away our producing power. All we have now is purchasing power, and that's the only thing that's keeping us safe. Once all the jobs are gone, we may not even have that.

I understand completely. I was old enough to understand what was happening when I watched NAFTA drive the last nail in the coffin of Bethlehem Steel, a company that helped build some little known projects as the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge. That was a very sad day for America.
Now the old Bethlehem Steel Works is a friggin' casino. This isn't AC or Vegas, so people do not come to the Lehigh Valley to gamble. That casino preys on the community, leeching much more money from them than it ever returns in the way of employment figures.

Wow, a fecesload of interesting topics derived from this troll's thread.
ok, I try to adress some points:
Bolly-/Hollywood:
from the output of films they are both equal in amount, but for most of us who are raised in western culture the Bollywood productions look strange and unappealing. On a global scale I would just say that Hollywood productions just meet the taste of the masses - and have the biggest production and PR budget ;)
When we speak of Hollywood outside of the US we mean generally all big-budget productions from the States, regardless if they were shot in Berlin, Germany or Berlin, KY.
Yes, Hollywood dominates the global market, but in terms of quality I am a big fan of the independent cinema. USA, Scandinavia today, France, Italy, Japan in the 60s-80s.
Personally I think the most innovative moving pictures which come from the states are series productions of the cable networks, They have great authors and most important take the time to tell a story and don't shy off to touch controversial themes.
the decline of the heavy industry
The region where I was raised was also dominated by the heavy industry. It went down in the 80s till the 00's. Sadly it never fully recovered from it's decline. I must add that our tertiary sector (service industry) was much lower in terms of percentages than in North America, but anyway it was not able to replace all the lost jobs. So I cannot give away muich hope here...
next: the dumbing down of the people/pupils (us:students :03:) - gotta grab some food and a beer first
