Can't load from external torp storage

So, I've just made a successful attack run on a large convoy. Took apart 4 BIG ships, and have seriously crippled many others. Used up all of my internal torpedos. I took a 2+ hour pounding from enraged destroyers, but managed to evade, no damages.

Surfaced and secured from silent running. Bow and stern torpedo rooms are fully staffed, no red exclamation points denoting tired crews.

Why won't they load from the external torpedo storage?! Auto loading is set to On.

I run the GWX 3.0 mod if that helps. Windows Vista 32bit home edition.

You'll have to manually order them (drag and drop the torpedo) to move the torpedo from the external slots to the internal ones. When the torpedo is within the sub, in the internal slots, they will auto load it.

Ahh, I see. I think that was what I was doing wrong. I was dragging the torp directly from the external storage to the actual tube I wanted loaded. Thanks very much!

This very thing caught me out last night as well, took me 10 minutes to figure out what the hell I was missing.

Yep, external eels are stored in special compartments in between the exposed decks and the inner pressure hull. They've got to be moved inside the pressure hull for storage there or loading into empty tubes before they can be used.

In RL this was quite the operation as special equipment had to be set up on the deck in order for the men to hoist the eels out of external storage and angle them down through the torpedo loading hatches into the innards of the boat.

At sea in potentially unfriendly waters this would all be complicated by the added vulnerability of the boat to attack (particularly from the air) during the process.

Ah, so that's where the extra fish went. I wasn't sure where they would go. (I think I see one of the containers aft of the conning tower on the type IX.)

Just loading torpedos in general seems far too daunting of a task, let alone from external sources on an open and rough ocean.

IIRC the game will let you transfer external torps in pretty much any conditions so long as you're surfaced - but that would be far from realistic.

A lot of players up the realism by only ordering the procedure under ideal weather conditions and when the boat is stopped or barely moving to better reflect what was possible in real life. And I personally won't attempt it anywhere where I expect to be within range of Allied aircraft or heavy shipping traffic.

Not sure, judging by the surroundings they were docked somewhere when that picture was taken. But it was the first one I found that showed them loading an eel into the pressure hull with (what looks like) the onboard equipment. There might have been other stuff going on that accounts for the rest of the stuff on the deck.

It does look like the deck covering of the loading hatch is propped up against that stack of stuff though.

A 21 inch diameter torpedo doesn't sound like much.

And then you compare it to a person.

Makes me realize that taking a torpedo from the aft storage to the for'd storage is completely unrealistic, something I curse in-game.

I wonder if that stack of bricks is boxed ammunition for the flak mount(s)? :hmmm:
