I'm playing with TMO 2.0, RSRD. I would like to know if anyone have tried to do a harbor aid, i.e., attacking anchored ships on light protected harbors. I tried to do that on Wake Island, got inside the harbor and almost got to fire at the ships. I got detected because I made a stupid mistake at the harbor aproach, then I got to load the game and try something else.

I know that some very brave captains went as far as bombarding enemy ports with the deck gun, but I believe that was very rare. Also, I believe that most of japanese harbors, be it at home or away would have some kind of anti-submarine device like mines or underwater nets. So, going to an enemy harbor and just firing torpedoes at the stationed ships seem to far fetched. Does anyone know if that was possible or not?

I do it all the time. Taking out any armed ships first is a good idea though, they will shoot back even though they're anchored, after that it's like shootin' fish in a barrel :)

Nothing like going into a nice, quiet harbor, lining up a shot on a big tanker, and then finding a task force sailing in.

That was a fun bit of panic time. I decided to take my chances and take out a heavy cruiser on my way out of the harbor. The task force apparently reached it's last waypoint, though. It just disappeared.

Harbor raiding is unrealistically easy in game compared to history. If you're gonna do it, you might as well do it big....go to Truk,:D

With RSRD a few harbors have subnets and mines. I've never hit a mine in a port that I know of, but having looked at the mission editor they're some big mine fields around some harbors.

Some have some escorts, some don't. Harbors like Truk and Palau is where you can find many capital ships, but they're patrolled. If you time it, it's fairly easy to get past them, sink ships and escape. Also some big capital ships in some of the ports around Japan that are easy to get at.
