TMO 2.0, RSRD - USS-Plunger (SS-179) -July 1942 - Third patrol - First patrol with SJ radar - 90 % realism - Map updates on - Event Camera on

Got off Pearl to the Aleutians in order to do a barrier patrol.
Halfway there I receive a radio message saying that a Japanese task force will try to ressuply Kiska (you gotta love RSRD!).

So, I order full ahead and get there two days later, right in time to intercept a merchant ship and its escort destroyer traveling at 18 kts. Fire at the two, got the merchant with two hits but the destroyer escapes. (unfortunately I don't have any screen shots for that). Now I'm the hunted and she is pretty insistent. Four hours later I manage to escape, and I take an extra two hours to surface far away from that destroyer. Of course, my feeling for revenge is at the max and then the opportunity presents itself. My surface radar detects a single target stopped at the same region where the merchant was sunk.
I start to get there and then what I see in my sights???

Yep, that's right, my very own Bungo Pete! At zero speed. What is it doing, rescuing survivors?

Anyway, the good 'old Plunger is going for the kill.

I submerge, do all the interceptions and calculations needed to get that sitting duck (Asashio Destroyer).

Then, at the right distance I fire two fishes at her. The DD detects and start moving. But it is too late. As one torp misses her astern, the other one hits right in the middle.

And there she blows!!!

Very nice! So my question is: does RSRD simulates survivor rescue? Or because I managed to destroy the merchant ship, the destroyer didn't have any more ships to escort so it just stayed there not knowing what to do?
Anyway, it may be not a great kill (BB or cruiser or something), but it was my first warship kill and I wanted to share!

And this is good'old Plunger, sailing in the setting sun to get even with the Rising Sun!

Usually the escorts move on, even if their merchants are gone. However, he may been sitting to listen. Some escorts are persistent, even more so after the merchants are gone.I think more than likely the destroyer was in sleeper mode trying to listening for you, TMO DD's are sneaky like that.

Well, maybe you have an answer there.

Because it was very unusual. That destroyer was just sitting there, doing nothing. Only moved when it detected two torpedoes going its way. Anyway, maybe he was trying to listen, but that didn't turned out good for him in the end...

I usually dont waste my torpedos on escorts unless its out of desperation, such as a down the throat shot.I dont attack them because in most cases(this is where you got lucky) they can speed up rapidly even after sitting still and avoid the torpedos, escort acceleration times are a bit unrealistic so you got lucky in that sense but he was no doubt listening for you.The exception is when I have Mark 18 wakeless torpedos, I fire, they never know they are coming, just sitting there after an attack and then boom, they are gone.Makes follow up attacks on convoy a bit easier later on.
