Japanese, being weird as hell since the nukes failed to finish their job in '45 :D
Just kidding. I do think a lot of the "weapon-tan" pictures really jump the shark though. I preferred it when they stuck to things like Windows versions.
Either we didn't bomb them enough, or we bombed them too much. Not sure which.

Japanese pop culture and even nerd culture isn't all that dense, to be honest. It's just this rather weird 'moe' segment of nerd-dom that can't help but seem creepy - essentially grown men obsessed with cute, sexualized cartoon portrayals of young girl characters. It's a mix between fantasies of being a guardian of said girls' innocence (usually of a specific character one is 'moe' over, though, commonly referred to as being one's "waifu", i.e. Engrish for 'wife'), and the fantasy of ahem... saving her cherry for yourself. It's especially hilarious to watch Japanese nerds rage over this. Couple of years ago there was an anime series where it was mildly implied that a leading girl character may possibly have had a boyfriend in the past, which was immediately interpreted by the fanbase as her being 'impure'. Flaming and breaking/burning of large amounts of merchandize featuring said character ensued, all because there was a risk she was not innocent and could not possibly be obsessed over.
Should be noted that despite the apparent creepiness of that, rates of things like child pornography/abuse in Japan are reported to be notably lower than in most of the developed world. I say let them nerds have their fantasy cake, as long as they stay away from the 'real thing' :hmmm:
The Japanese public generally seems really into the idea of indulging in fantasies without carrying them over into the real world. Perhaps that's an inevitable venting of crushed/repressed nationalism and rigorous drone-like work ethic that comes with their economy.

I know you're just teasing me, but I am interested in feudal Japanese history as well as being a practitioner of the martial arts. However, I find anime to be rather creepy. Not into it. Same with JRPGs. A little too much lusting after sister.
I like some of it, and some others I find a bit , but each to their own. I'm not a major fan of moe, yeah it's cute but that's about it.

The large woman in the middle is the naval port of Kiel. The rest are as follows...
1st row (top): "Molch" midget submarine, heavy cruiser Admiral Graf Spee, Type VII submarine, aircraft carrier "Graf Zeppelin"
2nd row: "S-Boot" patrol craft, light cruiser "Leipzig", battlecruiser "Scharnhorst", Battlecruiser "Gneisenau", Arado Ar 196 recon plane, light cruiser "Emden", "Neger" midget submarine
3rd row: Pocket battleship "Deutschland"/"Lützow", battleship "Tirpitz", Battleship "Bismarck", heavy cruiser "Prinz Eugen", pocket battleship "Admiral Scheer"
4th row (bottom): Light cruiser "Karlsruhe", battleship "Schlesien", Battleship "Schleswig-Holstein", type XIV "Milchcow" support submarine
The actual term is Mecha Musume and there's quite the following, there's even an anime 'Strike Witches' which naturally features as much panty shots as it does actual aircraft references, must confess I've never watched it, I like seeing how they work the design into the costume and yeah, some of them are cute, but I'm not that into it all.
But yeah, there's tons of them out there, from warships to fighters to tanks to trains to Transformers and Gundam, you name it, someone's done it.

From a purely technical ability point of view, the artwork is very good indeed. As for the subject matter... well, that's more difficult to assess.
There seems to be a definite sense of humour here, mixed with a rather obvious sexual undertone (but that's anime all over no?), often confused by the rather 'cutsie' look to the characters.
Of all the cartoons made these days, I'd have to say that the japanese have some of the very best - in fact it does the genre a slight disservice to refer to them as mere cartoons - From Legend Of the Overfiend, to Akira or Ghost In The Shell and all the other scifi/fantasy bizzaro films, you have to appreciate the vision of some of them; perhaps it's that special japanese slant (absolutely no pun intended here) that gives them that something that's missing from mere western ideals of cartoons as something just for children.

Yes, I mean, western animation for adults, well, there's not a massive choice really, not that is aimed at an age above say thirteen. Family Guy, American Dad, Bevis and Butthead, King of the Hill, South Park, those are about the only ones that come to mind, although some animations for the younger members have jokes that are aimed at the adults who might be watching as well, the Simpsons and the Flintstones come to mind here. However the common denominator in these animations is that they are done as comedy, even the ones aimed at adults (although there is an exception for animations aimed at younger members which may have more serious subjects, X-men, X-men evolution, etc).
Japanese animation covers the whole spectrum, now whether or not you like the art style, you cannot deny that there are some animes out there which are definitely not aimed at children. Things like Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Black Lagoon, the former being a mind-f..erm...yeah, of the highest order and the latter being guns, action and swearing. Both deal with some heavy themes, NGE in particular, and whilst they're not exactly realistic in many areas, they deal with human emotions quite well.
If there are any anime fans here who have not watched the two aforementioned series, I do urge them to do so, NGE will probably confuse you (it did me) but it is a classic, and Black Lagoon is just rip-roaringly good fun and well made.
Now, I'm not going to change any minds who have already been made up, and there's a good deal of looking down on the Japanese here, which is the victors privilege I guess, but I wasn't particularly an anime or manga fan before I met my fiancé, nor was I particularly enthralled with JRPGs. Since then though, I'm quite into anime and manga and a fan of the occasional JRPG (mostly the FF series up to IX). So if I can find something in it, then some people who don't give it a passing glance (as I once didn't) might well do also, but it's not something I can do for them, and they might never get into it and miss something that they may have otherwise enjoyed.
Yeah, there's some bloody weird stuff in Japan, I'm not going to deny it...one only has to look at their game shows to realise that...but at the same time, there are some bloody fantastic things to be found there if you look.

Most of NGE wasn't that confusing, though it was a lot of other things. It was just the ending which was really confusing (Actually, probably the most confusing thing I can think of).
And doesn't it defeat the point if you say that there are things besides weirdness in Japan while citing NGE? :O:

That brings up an interesting (to me, at least) point. In the Solomon Islands drawing, the [American] figure on the left cowers and writhes in pain when attacked by the defiant [Japanese] figure on the right. Contrast this with the drawing of the Yamato sinking, where the attacking figure in the upper left [this time an American] wears an expression of concern and regret upon assaulting the Japanese warship, who continues to be depicted as proud and defiant, albeit bloodied. On that level, it serves as a contrast of perceived strength and weakness on the cultural level.
Very much a mirror of the attitude that the Japanese continue to have about that war.

:haha: "Always protent you in the sky", in mini pants?
Or as it have a double meaning....
It's Japan...
That looks like a PLAAF star and bar, and they do have a sort of AWACS, but why is she blonde? Shouldn't she be a chinese chick?

S'anime, the laws of hair colour based on nationality go out of the window.
BUT...
I do believe that it's a KJ-2000 AWACs, which means that it's basically an IL-76 with a dome, so technically it's not Chinese, it's Russian...and there are blonde Russians, so they can dodge that bullet through that route I guess. :haha:

There is a myth in china saying that textbooks in Japan denies war crimes and claim that WWII is justified
but my friend in the JSDF says that its not true, those are supplementary textbooks that students could buy themselves but are not generally used in schools
Textbook or not, there is a cultural attitide that the Japanese fought an honorable, albeit losing war against a dishonorable enemy, and regard their crimes in China and on Bataan as justified. It is a view that their government does little to discourage, which is in total contrast to Germany.

In all fairness the Japanese did try to forewarn us the attack was comming on Peal Harbor. It was our own incompetitance or complacincy that prevented it from being delivered on time.
But honerable war?
Like convincing the population that the Americans were hidous monsters comming to eat their children. So convincingly many threw themselves to their death rather than befall a hidous fate.

As a subject matter Japanese animation, AKA Animé is odd. It is an answer to the out right ban on pornography. So to embrace the media is to embrace pornography, and for the most part under age pornography because the use of an underage look is the driving image in Animé.
The OP's pics show the underage principle to Animé.

They could have warned us with a declaration of war. So, no, they did not attempt forewarning. That is not to say that incompetence did not play a large part; it most certainly did.
The only culture I am aware of to have developed the used panty vending machine.

Huh? It was Japanese incompetence. They waited to send the coded declaration til the last minute, and their code guy in DC could not decode and write it out fast enough to deliver it on time.
There was no forewarning, and had the declaration been delivered as they wanted, the bombs would have been falling before so much as a phone call got made to PH.
PS—to be more in line with my earlier post, I will suggest my theory that the decoder at the embassy was busy looking at "up the skirt" cartoons of school girls and lost track of time, hence late decoding.
