I've been working my way up in difficulty (GWX) and I noticed that when you turn map updates on/off it doesn't change the difficulty percentage any.
Does anyone know why?
I'm probably going to turn map updates off soon, and I was looking at the difficulty settings today, and I noticed that.
Also,
Is it the general consensus that turning off periscope stabilization makes the periscope more wobbly than it really was?

There have been u-boats with periscope optics similar to the split prism as you can use in SH4 (US submarines). There you have both images moving up and down. Adjusting that angle would be alot easier than keeping the waterline at the appropriate level while measuring the mast. But I believe Hitman did some investigation on this, but not all u-boats had this feature. So some still had to use the 'old fashioned' periscopes. And according to him distance was mostly eyeballed anyway.

Go to C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\GWX3.0\data\Cfg and open the gameplay settings CFG. Alter the map update figure to what you want but ensure the summ total of all the settings =100

It doesn't bother me that it add 0% to the difficulty. I was just wondering if there was a reason why it's set like that by default?

It's not set like that by default.
I don't know why it doesn't in your setup, but Map Contact Updates does make a difference in the stock game and in most of the supermods. It doesn't for me because I use the Assisted Plotting Mod, which requires Map Contact Updates to be on.

It should add 12% to your difficulty level.
