View Full Version : So who just made 2nd degree black belt?
frau kaleun

OH THAT'S RIGHT I DID. :D
Am home after celebratory dinner, did my presentation for sensei and a couple invited onlookers (family, friend and fellow student) and was duly promoted to the rank of Nidan (= 2nd Dan). :yeah:
I was allowed to put together my own presentation so I chose one sword kata and two other (unarmed) kata, all stuff that I either learned or fine-tuned while working towards this promotion. But a couple weeks ago it occurred to me that, technically speaking, none of these kata are 2nd Black material, they're just things my sensei decided to work on with me over the past couple of years. So I started playing around with some of the actual techniques that are required at this level, and ended up stringing them together in one long presentation.
I previewed it for my sensei a couple days ago when I was finishing up my last pre-promotion session and he was pretty knocked out.
"You made up your own kata? You made up your own kata."
"Well, yeah, I guess so, but the transitions still need some work..."
"Get out of here, go home, I have nothing to add, you're ready. You have seen the big picture. YOU MADE UP YOUR OWN KATA."
Turned out I was the first student he'd ever had who made up a kata all on their own just cuz they felt like it. I did some more fine-tuning on it and I have to say, it turned out pretty good. So, yeah, I'm awesome. :D

What martial art do you practice?
Kenpo jiu-jitsu aka kenpo karate.
Also, show us a video of your kata:up:
Well you could search for "Tracy's Karate" videos of the three established ones I did, I'm sure they're out there somewhere. Although I won't vouch for anyone else's performance of them, a lot depends on who you learn it from. It's one way that those in the know can tell you who studied with, every instructor tends to put his/her own little tweaks on things and pass it on. But the ones I did were:
#1 Sword
Little Tiger
the Book Set aka the Panther Set. Although I did the complete version, I don't know how frequently that's taught. I learned the shorter version first and only learned the "missing section" recently.
There is no video of the one I made up, cuz it didn't exist until about six days ago. :O:

Congratulation, do you still carry pepper spray? :O:
or switch that to katana . . . .
When I used to walk a lot around the neighborhood for exercise I had a small canister of pepper spray on a keyring... but the closest I ever came to using it was on some dog that was running around the lot next to where I live. The owners were within eyesight but didn't have it on a leash. They kept saying "oh he's friendly" but he was growling and charging me, getting closer every time. I'm supposed to take their word for it? I don't think so. I love animals but I'm not getting bit by some strange dog because its owners can't be bothered to obey the law. I told them I had pepper spray and would use it if they didn't get their pet under control and they just laughed. :nope:
It was a katana kata that I did, actually. I have a wooden practice one (bokken) that I use. I keep it handy at home, it's my version of the baseball bat that some people keep under their beds. :O:

Yea I noticed that it was a Katana kata. Is your Katana a really good one? Or rather do you have a real Katana other than the wooden practice one?
Or even made by a Japanese sword master craftsman? That could cost considerable money.
Katana is simply the sharpest edge of a blade ever made by man. Really cool weapon. I admire Japanese medieval armors and weapons. Those people at the time were really obsessed with their craftsmanship.

Should you change your username to Tomoe Gozen?
Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a mighty bow; and she performed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors.

There is this company in Japan that I have been dreaming of dealing with. They make swords the traditional way. Just the blade of a Katana is about $1500 and you still need the rest of the stuff. These are custom made swords. I have a "nice" one I used to pathetically practice iaidō. as well as some bokken and shinai.
It has always been one of my dreams to make the time to really get into iaidō. Watching it is a spiritual experience. :yep:

Well people who practice martial arts in essence are building up their mind as a weapon. The greatest weapon is not the limbs or the sword but the mind of the one who wields them. It's more about philosophy than combat. But of course many practice martial arts for its practicality but I guess these would not count as true warrior. What define a warrior is their mind not merely their skill.
Just my 2 cents anyway.

I bet you thought 'Kung fu hustle' was a good flick:hmmm:
One of my favorite movies ever. Probably my favorite martial arts film, right up there with Kung Fu Panda. I have odd tastes in martial arts film, lol.
Obviously I think they're both very funny, which I enjoy - but I find they also capture something else that is vital on a spiritual/psychological level, which often gets missed in other "chop-socky" films. And I don't think I expected that from either film, so it was doubly impressive.

Nope, I just have the wooden one - a real, proper katana would be outrageously expensive, and I don't think I'd want one that wasn't made the traditional way.
I do have a big Shun (kitchen) knife, one of their selling points (and they are not cheap either, when it comes to fine cutlery) is that the same process is used to forge their blades as was/is used for the making of traditional katana blades, and supposedly they are made to the same high standards of quality. I can tell you the blade is a thing of beauty, and boy is it sharp. You could cut the end of a finger off with that thing and not even know it until you wondered why your broccoli was bleeding.

A fairly mediocre movie, but the cameos (Eli Wallach, Christopher Lee, Roddy MacDowell) and the repartee make it fun.

my grandfather is an (unofficial) instructor and somewhere in the black belt range, in the northwestern Illinois area. Frau Kaleun has proven in a very short time to be a master of witty debate, verbal wrestling and advanced put-down. Your response to my comments was rambling and incoherent to myself, and obviously from your quoted response to another post, to others as well. My response was to point out that if you're going to try to sound important by using a lot of big words you should at least get the small ones right. It has nothing to do with forum rules or "contractual obligations"; it has everything to do with common sense.
Nothing wrong with any of that, but if you're going to play word games you should expect others to play also.

if you're going to play word games you should expect others to play also. No, I do not agree. Common sense is a basic, it is sometimes so basic that I am not familiar with certain terms. I do not play, my way of thinking is beyond. I think different, let me explain, I shall simplify : If you were walking past an old lady waiting public transport, to wit Bus/coach and she says "excuse me, do you know what time it is" ? Knowing your way of thinking and assuming you were wearing a watch, (that was not broken and set at the correct time, in your locus zone) you would most likely answer her request kindly and correctly. But I think differently, to the same question I would reply, "yes I do. It is an abstract fundamental concept, a category of sense, if you will, involving the recognition of an idea of before and after, past, present and future.. regarded theoretically as having a beginning and an end, as something limited by the duration of the external universe, as contrasted with eternity. :yep: However, not withstanding here-tofore, I surmise that your original misconstrued query relates not to the metaphyscial concept of time per say, but rather to its mode of computing, ie its reckoning, in the chronographical sense." at this juncture I would offer some advice to help her "specifically your question could be precise as follows... A-hem (Am I in possession of knowledge relating to the present particular hour of the day and, If relevant, the fraction thereof, as reckoned in this given latitude? ) :hmmm:
There is a word for that sort of behavior. I don't use that kind of language in public.

Could even be next year's race, if he has a Tardis.

It's an attempt to introduce a 4chan meme (http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/verbose-memes), don't ask me why.
The meme can be amusing if one has enough command of the language to pull if off. And is, you know, actually funny. :O:

I am pleased that some one is able to bring themself to a disipline which allows them a 2nd degree belt.
The reality is if you are not willing to use the profeciency it is worth nothing. A person who has no training will win the battle, because he/she has no rules.

Not really. When caught off guard the tendency is always to freeze. Training takes over at those moments. This is true of pilots as well - and musicians.

Therein lies the purpose of the martial arts; training so that one does not freeze under strain. It is also why water is often used as a metaphor; one must be fluid and flexible in action.

I have run into a few folks who claim to be trained in the asian martial arts. But the reality I would kill them.........because I have nothing to lose.

:yep:
Muscle memory, and "no mind."
Ideally the body has gone through the motions so many times, and in so many variations, that it will react to protect itself without one having to think about it first. Thinking about it would only delay the reaction.
Many of the basic movements we are taught derive from the natural instinct to protect one's vital areas, which we all do without thinking about it. A lot of our basic stuff just takes the natural instinctive reaction and retrains the body to do it in a way that is more effective, more efficient, and which leaves you in a much more stable position from which to strike back or continue evasive tactics as needed.

Yeah. After months of screwing something up and thinking "Oh crap! Where was I supposed to go? Where am I supposed to be now?", it's nice to be on stage, make a mistake and think "Oops. I hope nobody noticed that."
Nicer still to not make mistakes at all, but it's going to happen no matter what.
