View Full Version : Question About Refuel / Refit Stops

Hey guys!

For now I'm still based out of Pearl, just now heading out to Truk on my second patrol. In case you haven't noticed there's a LOT of blue space between Point A and Point B. It's my own personal "thing" to make a port call at the closest place to my patrol area to top off the tanks.

Over the course of the patrol I make lots of visits to refuel and rearm. Does this have any affect on my renown? I mean if I can complete the patrol with only making a couple pitstops would I have a higher score than if I make four port calls...assuming I'd sunk equal tonnage.

Just wondering...

Some of the old salts here have said that the only thing that really matters at the end of a patrol is the tonnage. Even ignoring the patrol orders and just going out and sinking ships will give you all the renown you could want. There's really not much to spend it on anyway. Just go out & have fun Captain. :DL

Word of caution:
Multiple refits/rearmings may cause your save files to "grow" a fact that is suspected to cause CTDs.

I've never heard why refitting would cause CTD's, do it all the time. It's possbile saving many times over the same save could cause them, moreso if you save near contacts with lower system specs. Most CTD's are file related to improper mods, residue files leftover, ect. I've played for two years and can't remember the last CTD I had, except when playing with mod files on a seperate game install.

You can refit away, it takes two refits to fill a empty sub with torps and has no effect on points.

I'm assuming you've gone through a war from start to finish in those two years. I have SH4 with U-boats and I'm generally getting CTD's anywhere after 2 to 5 patrols. I've tried the game with all the different mods, and no mods, or just a few of Webster's on a stock game. I'm pretty sure I haven't done a year in game time yet.
I tend to save and restart the game from the same save. When I'm ready to shut down, I save to my previous save, then restart from that again the next time I play. I delete any of the auto-saves. Is this a problem?? I'm thinking 89 saved games would take a lot of room on my hard drive LOL. Would this cause CTD's ??
Thanx! :)

CTD's can come from a host of issues, mostly screwed up mods, so always look there first. If you have DX9, current drivers, correct sys specs and proper mods, CTD's should be a thing of the past. Also, make sure you point your shortcut to sh4, not gu.

I don't save a lot, basically one save per patrol, but I never stack on top of it. Don't save around any contacts.

Alky,
have you checked how big are the save files that cause the CTD?

Hmm, no, I'll look at that the next time I get one.

I don't have the time to do a complete patrol in one sitting, I think I'll try to make a new save each time and delete previous ones and make sure there are no anomalies or contacts nearby when I do :)
Constantly having to start new careers is annoying, being committed to one career and one boat would be more fun :)

Heh, I idly wonder if it's possible to play the game from the start of the war to the end on a single patrol, just by not ending your patrol. :P

Probably would cause the CTD issue, tho.

If you're talking about one patrol, I highly doubt it. Could it be done, sure, if you don't take any damage, which eventually you will. I guess if you used saves over and over and did about 40 refits to deal with game issues.
However, the time involved. I've finished the war twice, one time dying once, but so close I just had to finish. I've yet to finish a complete war cycle without dying at least once.

Plus, you would be stuck in the same boat, same crew.

I respectfully disagree wrt CTDs and save files. I have had absolutely no CTDs for literally years. Just recently however I have had CTD (although only in loading a saved file) and the only thing I've done recently that I've never done before is to save a lot of 'replay' files. I can't reload the last five files I saved (all replays). I've deleted all the replay files except for one but still no joy. I can start from a save in-port but not a mid-mission. The last mid-mission saved game was en route to my next patrol zone (Luzon) and no traffic, storms etc so there was nothing out of the ordinary in the save file itself.
In short, the evidence seems to indicate the number of saved files but having said that it's also the first time I've had this problem. I have only 3 mods installed (TMO, TMO patch and RSRD) and they have been the only mods I've ever used.
My system is an i7 with 6 Gb RAM and a Radeon HD 5700 PCE card (i.e. smokin!).

Sorry, but somebody's got to ask em!

What's a CTD?

:hmmm:

Crash To Desktop. The game just shuts down without warning.

Question; Concerning replays, as I've never saved one, What do you get with a replay file??:hmmm: Is it like a movie play or what?

Dogfish40;
to be honest it's been awhile but yes the replay files are essentially 'recordings' of your mission. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but it saves your entire mission from leaving port to the point you 'saved'. I believe that's why saving a lot of replays can quickly become an issue. If you save a replay at point 'X' then a few minutes later save another replay at point 'Y' you will have two replays which both start at base and continue up to each of the save points, obviously a quick way to chew up space.
If I'm not mistaken you can jump in at any point and "refight" the mission.

It is handy if you want to film (i.e. use FRAPS) to create your own recording. You can record the replay thereby giving you some flexibility in editing/stopping/pausing etc. In my old rig I found that FPS hit when trying to use FRAPS was less when doing it using a replay file than trying to use FRAPS while in-game. I hope that makes sense. In my new rig, filming is not a problem.
I suggest you do a quick test replay save in a mission then have a look at what you can do with it.
Hope this helps.

I hardly ever experience a CTD. They do occur but, they are quite rare and have no effect on my game saves. I simply click on the task bar icon and reopen the game with no ill effect. As far as a game failing to load, I used to experience them often enough to elicit some concern on my part. Then, somebody over at the UBI forum (forget who) suggested that I save all my games from the Control Room. Since then, I rarely get a failure to load crash, though they are still the most frustrating type of crash to me.

Tonnage does, stops dont really matter. Know this, if your boat gets damage, you can only fix it at homeport.

I mean if I can complete the patrol with only making a couple pitstops would I have a higher score than if I make four port calls...assuming I'd sunk equal tonnage.

No, you get the same amount of renown. If you're able to do more pitstops, sink more ships and fat merchants, then your renown will definitely increase.

Somewhere was a file which told how much renown you get from doing different things...

*Checks*

*Finds something offtopic*

In some file was time compression settings, there was maximum setting, that 8120 or something, can you rise it to ridiculous amounts or does the game crash..?

Well, it may be that I didn't remember correctly, every aircraft file has the amount of renown you get from shooting one down...

I have got pretty good renown amounts by just going to the biggest party in the sea and sinking enough ships but if I remember correctly leaving object not completed gives you 500 renown penalty.. Sounds quite big.. :hmmm: Perhaps I'm wrong... :timeout:

Speed: 15 kts
Running time: 1 minute
TC: 8120
Running length: 3750 km
Time to circulate the entire planet: 10 minutes...

Does it really need to get more ridicolous than that?? :o

Besides your little Sempron would probably bleed to death before even reaching the 8120 mark...

Reg. renowns: have no idea, but since you're a pirate with enough renowns, why care? :arrgh!:

Happy Hunting!

Disabling a mod makes a differance and than re-enabling while at port does help prevent CTD and still you are still in your boat at the start of the new patrol

Yea it does it at approx 500 somehting.. xD

Well, it depends on where I am, if there is any land nearby or any ships it is totally terrible, I have 1-4 FPS at 8120 so it's faster to use 2000 something when I have less eye-rape FPS :D

Besides that... you'll miss a lot of stuff when using these high time compresisions. I think the engine shut things down the more it struggles to keep up and many contacts the system simply can't respond to, when your raceboat passes it with 200000 km/hour.... and you'll probably sometimes find yourself dead without knowing what hit you... or what you hit...

If you find patrolling "boring", there are loads of very cool single missions and single patrols out there. Highly recommended!

Me? I've ended up with never going beyond TC 128 - but then again, I'm as old and rusty as my beloved Silversides
