Forgive me if this question has been pointed out earlier...
But I was wondering how one could change the length of days between patrols?

In Data/Cfg/Basic.cfg find the lines :
[TIME]
NbDaysInBase=xx

Change xx to the number of days that suits your taste.

Mush easier is to use SH3Commander and set how many days you want to spend in base (milk cow or whatever) in options.

And the best option in Commander is 'Random', AKA 'Surprise Me'. :D

Not forgetting....any damage will result in one additional day per % point.

I haven't noticed that. Thank you.

Whats are the ranges for 'random'?

Could I possibly finish my third patrol in early '40and then all of sudden be in exile in Argentina with grandkids?

Here's the data from the relevant file:

;"Randomise number of days spent in base" option
;YEAR=<MinDaysInBase>|<MaxDaysInBase>
1939=5|30
1940=5|45
1941=10|50
1942=15|55
1943=20|60
1944=25|65
1945=25|65

The min/max figures are based on the actual historical averages for each time period.

Whatever number Commander gives you, the game will also add 1 extra day for every 1% loss in hull integrity. Looks like 3 months or more could be a possibility later in the war if you come back really beat up, but you shouldn't have to worry about ending up on the other side of the globe with a grandchild on your knee. Even sailors don't work that fast. :O:

Random (if you have 100% hull when you return) I think can be as short as week or as long as a month and a half. Historically this would be the closet you can get to the way things really were; though after particullarly long patrols (120+ days), a very hard/taxing or very successul patrol the crew might have gotten extended shore leave to actually go home and visit family (Kriegsmarine, especially the U-boats were very good about taking care of their sailors and giving them generous leave when they returned from any patrol).
