View Full Version : Optimistic about the future of my nation...for the first time in a while.

I have never been accused of being an optimist, at times I am a bit of a cynic to be honest.I prob have not been confident in the future of America since 2006 or so.The last two years(almost) under Barry O , Pelosi, and Reid have really put a damper on my outlook for this country, their dangerous agenda is just too much.
Now as we approach the most important mid term election prob of our lifetime, I feel some optimism. The Conservative movement known as the Tea Party has helped purge some of the RINO's and other useless Republicans from the GOP.We have a wave of real conservatives about to come to Congress.Things will not be easy, they will no doubt have to constantly battle with Barry O and his regime but at least there will be something that will put the brakes on his agenda, which gives me some hope that he won't have free reign as he has.
The thing that gives me the most optimism is people who seemingly never paid attention are now involved. Not the political types like myself but people who normally would not pay attention(how we got into this situation) are interested. The one good thing about Barry's election in 08, it woke a lot of people up, lit a fire, awoken a sleeping giant etc I have confidence that the new congress will be mostly different, will stop Barry and hopefully we can throw him out in 2012.Because the greatest danger is if he gets a second term, with nothing to lose, there is no telling what he will do.Barry shows some restraint now(little but some) because he knows he has to run for reelection, but if he got a second term, we will be up a certain creek without a paddle.
Bottom line, our best days are ahead of us, sometimes it takes being brought down a peg or two as we have to get back on top, we will.
Anyone else share my optimism?

Being brought down a peg or two is fine, if the lesson is learnt, if not and somebody is in a rush to get back to their 'place' then it's dangerous for all :nope:

No. So long as the Republican Party is controlled by Neo-Conservatives, I see little to be excited about. They are no better than their Progressive counterparts, as their track records are indistiguishable. If only we could eject the real RINOs.
I'm not optimistic except that Obama will be unable to do more through congress. Sadly, the laws passed already give huge power to unelected regulators.
I think we're screwed, frankly.
The US desperately need to massively cut spending. The discretionary budget is chump change. We need the congresscritters to man-up, look the camera in the eye, and step on the "third rail." SS, Medicare, and medicaid are going to destroy the country. Raising taxes will NOT solve the problem, raising marginal rates will not massively increase revenues for more than 1 year, then it will drop back to the same % of GDP range it always is regardless of marginal rates (as it stifles growth).
Cutting entitlements is the only hope. The demographics are all wrong with baby boomers demanding more free loot than they have a right to expect (there is no reason for anyone to expect anything past what they would have expected had they retired in the middle of their working life—as far as I'm concerned Bush's idiotic medicare drug thing should only be given to people who started paying FICA the year it was passed). Everyone else should be SOL on that, they never expected it, taking it away is taking away NOTHING they paid for.

The rules of the global game already have irreversibly changed, and still do so, taking power away from the traditional strong national actors that once were known, towards supranational (/=non-national) corporations and new national actors, namely China. A Republican or Democrat president does not make a difference in that. Both would need to face the same new playfield and the same new rules.
And it are not as much their rules anymore as it once used to be in the past.

IMO we are well down the path of ruin and decline already. For many reasons, some of which have already been cited. I think the country our children and grandchildren will inherit will be a run down, dilapidated and poor, second world nation. Our infrastructure is crumbling, most of our industry has gone overseas to places like china, we're drowning in debt, cost of living keeps increasing, the list goes on. We are well, and truly, farked.
But hey, we can all look up to the corporate executives for keeping the "American dream" alive eh? HA!
edit: Add crap like this (http://money.cnn.com/2010/10/29/news/economy/australians_real_estate/index.htm), on top of all that. Hell, we won't even own our own properties anymore with stuff like that going on. On the bright side.. maybe we wont have an illegal immigration problem anymore when the mexicans realize the land of milk and honey has dried up, and theres nothing left to be had.

I agree. The United States of America is a setting sun, and that is not a new development. Like Rome, the politicians of all persuasions are her undoing; keeping themselves in power while neglecting their duty. Should she perish, her epitaph would read 'Here Lies America, Died of Polemics.'

Funny - and I don't at all mean to take a stance on this - but this EXACT quote is what I heard from several of my more liberal-oriented friends back in 2008. And look where that got you :hmmm:
Sadly, behind the partisan slogans and big promises, politicians on all sides aren't all that different... the problems are a lot deeper than any election can fix right now.

Normally I agree with Bubblehead1980, but in this case he is wrong in using MOB's words when expressing himself. It shows a lack of imagination and gives the opponents a heads up which is unneccessary.

Oh rot! None of this is new to politics, only the methods have been refined. Go read some newspapers from 100 years ago and see. :shifty:
