View Full Version : Mohammed tops list of English baby names

Gerald

London, England (CNN) - Hit the road, Jack.

Last year's most popular name for baby boys in England has been knocked off -- by Mohammed.

That's not immediately obvious from data put out this week by the Office of National Statistics, which declared Wednesday that Oliver was the single most popular name for boys born in 2009.

I don't get it... Teddy bears aren't allowed to be named Mohammed. Cartoons on paper aren't allowed to be named Mohammed. But those things are just toys and drawings, which physically can't really do anything...

In the meantime, it's statistically true that a large proportion of people across all cultures grow up to be a-holes. Even in the best of families, there's always one. So... why can't we name innocent toys after Mohammed, but we can name future a-holes after him?

Life's funny like that :D

It does not work, it is premature entry into the EU, the country must clean up its own house first, and there are many disturbances already

Might have something to do with the fact that at one time, the british empire encompassed just about all of the then civilised (and the not so civilised) world - it's only natural for children to gravitate toward their parents, after all...
in context, there's more of us than there are of them, for the most part anyway.

I hate Islam.

Yep. It is a backwards set of ideas that preaches misogyny, bronze-age science, everything I hate. I like some Muslims, but I hate their set of beliefs. I hate other sets of beliefs, too. Nazism, Communism, any literalist religious faith. There is no difference, they are voluntarily held sets of beliefs, and deserve to be liked, disliked, loved, or hated based on their merits. Literalist religion has no positive merits, or none that outweigh the negatives.

That out of the way, this is a non-story. What % of all the given names to boys in the UK is a variant of Muhammad? 1%? The sad reality is that Muslims are not very inventive in naming, and a large % of boys are named Muhammad (or some spelling variant).

If every Mexican in the US named his kid "Juan," Juan would WTF Pwn all other US boy names.

Heck, if all the jews in the US used "Ari" or something (not, Joel, please, that's my son's name ;) ), they'd own the #1 boy name spot.

Doesn't take much when a given minority uses the same name like 80% of the time or more.

Nothing to see, move along...

(though I suppose it shows a lack of desire to integrate on their part, else they'd be naming their kids "John" etc)

"The first reason why people keep the children's name Mohammed is because of their love of the prophet Mohammed, because they want to emulate him," said Imam Abdullah al-Hasan of the East London Mosque.

"They want to copy him not just through his behavior and conduct, but also his name," said the imam, who is thinking about naming his own newborn son after the founder of Islam.

The essence of Islam.

The answer that you serve here representing many countries in the region.

Good eh? :)
The city I live in has many peoples and there's a tendency for some to hold the opinion that there is an imbalance in the population here. I don't subscribe to it myself. Over all these ideas of invasion are grossly misrepresented; look at many cities in the midlands - you could be forgiven for believing it.

I should generally be more concerned with the reasons behind such scaremongering, than the cast of those who live around me.

My experience is that all the colours that live in my city have the same established view on immigration - it's funny in some ways and shows just how much we are all of the same mind. I shall explain, without any bias on my part, the observation of second and third generation Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims (some for their religious means), Indians, Pakistanis, Somalis, Nigerians, Jamaicans and many other peoples besides, too numerous to detail here. All, pretty much without exception made the same comment and regard concerning the influx of recent european economic migrants, more specifically eastern european workers. Bluntly, 'who are they to come here and take all of our jobs?' Exactly what the white peoples of britain said about them so many years ago. We are all in some way suspicious of outsiders - what better compass of a nations people could such a thing be, that all have the same view?

I believe this show much about people. Not about whites, or blacks, browns, english, pakistani, indian or pole. But the one thing we all have in common - the roots we have that makes this land feel like ours (that's about as much national pride you are likely to see me convey). I like that. It's somehow very british and gives meaning to what I said before about the empire - it may have been just that once, but now it is all of those people with some common history that they would not have had otherwise, and which makes us very different today.

Numbers are not a real concern for me - I live in a diverse place - living as a majority, equal or minority has no meaning. Attitude is what is important. That the UK is a predominantly white country, reveals much when fears of cultural invasion are broached. There is much to be said for casual racism and stereotyping, but the truth is we all do it here, to ourselves and others, as a passing thing. What is more important is the underlying fabric of how we all live and share more than we often care to admit or see.

There are many in my community. For the most part, I like that too, same as everyone else here.
