View Full Version : 'smell of frying bacon offends Muslims'

Well there you go....Brits are afraid of Muslims. A surrender nation.
hard-working cafe owner has been ordered to tear down an extractor fan - because the smell of her frying bacon 'offends' Muslims. Planning bosses acted against Beverley Akciecek, 49, after being told her next-door neighbour's Muslim friends had felt 'physically sick' due to the 'foul odour'.
I don't know about you, but bacon frying is a pleasant, no great smell, to me. Jews aren't great on pork either, but you don't hear them complaining about others cooking pork.

OK first it is the dailymail which makes the reporting suspect, ie, how much have they taken it out of context. Second it sounds like a grumpy old git of a neighbour who is using a spurious reason knowing it might get him sympathy.
It is a storm in a teacup and not a sign of how things really are in the UK.

There is some evidence that cooked food, especially fat rich, cooked food contributed to the higher level of intellegence that humans have attained. The theory is based on the amount of energy required to digest raw food versus that required to digest cooked food. And the amount of energy (fat) required for higher brain function and development as apposed to digestion.

Anyone describing the smell of bacon as disgusting is deranged.
Yeah, you can not be allowed to eat it, but your nose is still wired like anyone else. It's disgusting for the same reason unhidden women are likely disgusting to that person—smells yummy but can't have.
There are some smells and flavors that need to be "learned" to appreciate. Bacon is NOT one of them. :)

My father in law has a jewish background (ethnically, anyway, he's an atheist). He was on the Atkins diet for a while (he was in his 70s at the time), and I had my family's standard Christmas morning meal going when they came to see the kids Christmas morning—bagels and lox (my dad (catholic) always went out for the paper and some breakfast stuff, and on xmas the only place open was a jewish deli, so every year he'd bring bagels and lox for xmas breakfast).
Anyway, I'm making bagels, and my father in law proceeds to take out his bag of Atkins snack food—pork rinds (yum!). He smears cream cheese on one, then puts lox on top.
I asked if there was some special jewish hell for that. He thought there probably was.

That is the root of confict here lol :
In October 2008 the Association of Lebanese Industrialists petitioned to the Lebanese ministry of Economy to request protected status from the European Commission (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/European_Commission) for hummus as a uniquely Lebanese food, similar to the Protected Geographical Status (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Protected_Geographical_Status) rights held over regional food items by various European Union (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/European_Union) countries.[36] (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/#cite_note-35)[37] (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/#cite_note-36)[38] (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/#cite_note-37) Fadi Abboud (president of the Lebanese Industrialists Association), stated that "Israelis have usurped several Lebanese and oriental products",[1] (http://www.ali.org.lb/foodcampaignarticles.html). According to Abboud, Lebanon exported the first hummus dish in 1959.[39] (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/#cite_note-libnan-38) As a response, food critic Janna Gur wrote: "The success of certain brands of Israeli hummus abroad may have been what brought about Abboud's anger", leading him to claim that Israel has been "stealing" their country's national dishes, like hummus, falafel (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Falafel), tabbouleh (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Tabbouleh) and baba ghanouj (http://www.subsim.com/wiki/Baba_ghanouj).[40] (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/#cite_note-gur-39) In response, Shooky Galili, an Israeli journalist specialising in food who writes a blog dedicated to hummus),[2] (http://humus101.com/EN) said that "trying to make a copyright claim over hummus is like claiming for the rights to bread or wine. Hummus is a centuries old Arab dish—nobody owns it, it belongs to the region.[41] (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/#cite_note-big_one-40) As of late 2009, the Lebanese Industrialists Association was still "preparing documents and proof" to support its claim.[42] (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/#cite_note-41)

The theory is based on the amount of energy required to digest raw food versus that required to digest cooked food. And the amount of energy (fat) required for higher brain function and development as apposed to digestion.
It was this new meat diet, full of densely-packed nutrients, that provided the catalyst for human evolution, particularly the growth of the brain, said Katharine Milton, an authority on primate diet.
Without meat, said Milton, it's unlikely that proto humans could have secured enough energy and nutrition from the plants available in their African environment at that time to evolve into the active, sociable, intelligent creatures they became. Receding forests would have deprived them of the more nutritious leaves and fruits that forest-dwelling primates survive on, said Milton.

Interesting. I wonder if a current theory exists, as this one is 11 years old. It does not invalidate the theory, but I am wondering if there is something more current.
You are aware that theory paraphrased in the article you have linked borrows heavily on human evolutionary theory, are you not? It essentially tells us that the human desire for fats and salts is rooted in the requirements for the evolutionary development of the human brain that would have transpired on as man evolved into the modern Homo sapien.

The reason that (Orthodox) Jews and any other practicing denomination that chooses to, doesn't eat pork, is that traditionally i.e 1000's to hundreds of years ago, pork carried trichinosis. Perhaps it still does, but with modern manufacturing process, that danger has been minimized to eliminated.
It is a traditional practice based on common sense, for health reasons.
My guess is that it is the same for Muslims.
You may not choose to eat it for whatever health reasons...but it does smell delicious!

The only thing I find unusual is that someone who has such a lengthy post history detailing utter distain for evolutionary science would cite it to support an assertion. It is an assertion that I have come to agree with, but from the stance of your stated personal philosophy, it is very illogical.

Hopefully with the cutbacks some of these cretins will be removed from circulation, let them see what a dole queue is like for a change.
I remember something about the fact that you cannot keep pork for as long as beef, plus pork has other worms and parasites in the meat itself. I suppose the rationale behind not eating pork back then was because pigs eat the stuff humans throw away and in a desert country, that's gotta stink.

Living in So Ca. It's as common as salt+pepper for seasoning dishes.
Given that stuffing season is coming up, here's a stuffing recipe I've been making for years (from New Mexico Magazine) I have some of my notes in there since I hand-typed this from a photocopy:
Corn bread, chorizo and toasted piñon nut stuffing (from New Mexico Magazine)
Ingredients:
1 T. oil
1lb [b]mexican chorizo (bulk works best) (the bright, unnatural red stuff—NOT spanish/portuguese)
4 T. butter (recipe doesn't say, but I use unsalted, and adjust salt myself)
1 onion, chopped fine
1/4 cup diced celery
4 serrano chiles, seeded, deribbed, and finely minced (adjust this down to control the heat, I use 2 usually, 4 is too much for some guests, IMO)
6 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
1 t. minced fresh thyme
1 t. minced fresh sage
1 T. chopped fresh cilantro
1 cup piñon nuts (our local pine nuts, any will do), toasted and coarsely chopped
8 cups coarsely crumbled corn bread (home made best, can use boxed mix, too. You can
also use blue cornmeal cornbread if you want it more "southwestern")
1 cup chicken or turkey stock (again, home made stock always trumps store bought, but
it's still good with the latter)
Directions:
Toast piñon nuts by spreading on a baking pan, and cooking them until they get golden
brown. Very roughly chop them to get lots of sizes.
In a sauté pan, heat the oil over medium heat and add the chorizo, breaking it up with a
wooden spoon as it browns for about 5 minutes. Remove the sausage with a slotted spoon
and set in a large mixing bowl. Set aside.
Remove all the greese from the sauté pan (dump it, no need to be too careful). Put the
butter in the pan, and once it is melted add the onions, celery, chiles, and garlic.. Sauté
over medium heat 4-5 minutes until veggies are translucent and soft.
Remove the pan from the heat and add the herbs (thyme, sage, and cilantro). Pour the
mixture into the bowl with the chorizo, add the cornbread chunks and piñon nuts. Moisten
with the chicken (or turkey) stock using a little stock at a time.
You can either stuff the bird with it (I never do), or put it in a greased casserole and bake
at 350 for ~45 minutes.
This stuffing is stunningly good. I usually tone the serranos way down since we have a wide
array of people over, and not all like it really hot, and 4 is pretty hot. For many people not
in the southwest, 1 serrano might be fine (I have to admit I don't deseed/derib them
terribly much though).

You can cook it outside the bird, actually. I usually do since thanksgiving is not usually at our house, so I bring the "stuffing" in a large, dutch oven. The bird is only useful fro producing gravy, IMHO (and crispy skin). I can take or leave turkey as meat. Rather have duck, frankly. :)

tater, sometimes we have stuffing baked thinly on a tray, so it goes just a little bit crispy on top, kind of like a savoury flapjack. Typical 'stuffing of the bird' has a layer of ground sausage meat pressed into the chest/neck area of the turkey, followed by the aforementioned stuffing mix.
You gotta do your roasties in goose fat though, makes 'em all lovely and crispy delicious mmmmm

My mother in law made that a couple times. The trouble is that the duck needs to be cooked so the skin crisps up and you render out all that lovely fat to cook other stuff with.
It was good, but not as good as just the duck, IMHO. Goose works, too, because it has that wild "gotta keep warm!" fat like the duck.

Good idea; I think I might do that. I stopped eating meat for health reasons, but the excitement of doing good things for your body is quickly tempered by the realization that much of the vegetarian cuisine does in fact suck. I loved the way my body and mind felt and worked, but eating became a chore until I found a few cook books that really changed things up for me. I've got a few recipies that are really fantastic, if I can put my hand to them. I can't remember cooking recipies for squat. :88)

What I don't understand about the premise of this thread is that of all the Muslims I know, NONE of them object to anyone, not a Muslim, eating pork. They just don't eat it themselves.
I think this is more an individual attitude than a common religious attitude. Just like there are "militant" vegetarians who seem to have to "prove their point" in front of people and are generally considered jerks, most vegetarians I know don't give a crap what anyone else eats.
I think that would also apply to many Muslims too.

...and now my outing:
Hello, my name is Penguin and I am a vegetarian! And the smell of bacon doesn't really smell appealing to me...:o - but it neither offends me.
I must say that the best smelling meat to my nose is the one at a bbq - especially when it has been marinaded.
Despite beeing meatfree since almost 19 years I do taste it from time to time, seing if I miss something - guess the german in me needs his sausage from time to time...
For some sorts of meat there are some good substitutes - like for ground meat and yes, even pork - I cook a good veggie gyros - all a matter of seasoning. We have a great chinese restaurant here, they make the best veggie duck in the world - even with the crispy skin! On the other hand there are some distinctive flavors of meat where I haven't found a substitute for, game and bacon fall into this category.
I support the idea of a vegetarian recipe threat, not with recipes where you just change the meat to a vegetarian alternative, but where the whole composition is coherent without meat - like in many indian dishes. Though I am too sick and uncreative to write about recipes atm.
Well there you go....Brits are afraid of Muslims. A surrender nation.
I don't know about you, but bacon frying is a pleasant, no great smell, to me. Jews aren't great on pork either, but you don't hear them complaining about others cooking pork.

Ahh is that the smell of bacon? or is it the stench of 'selective' horse manure.
pure tabloid gold !!!
If it was any one else complaining about the smell of any other type of food it wouldnt even be a story!
There must be thousand of cases where residents have complained about the smells from extractor fans from cafes and takeaways, hell I used to live next door to a chinese and my flat mate complained about the stench to the council - why didnt he end up in the papers I wonder?
Also British people complain about the noise from local pubs all the time, though I bet if a muslim complained about that - we'd have to accuse him of enforcing the islamic law which forbids alchahol consumption!
Thankfully most people arent stupid enough to take this kind of thing seriously,
But of course there will be a select few unable to join up the dots, who cry:
"Ohh look everyone, the evil muslims took away our freedom to cook bacon... Jews would would never do this" (or perhaps they would, but the media just woudn't treat it as news worthy since we are not at war with the Jews ;) )

Its ham until you throw it in the frying pan and heat it up for a bit, then it becomes bacon. :yep: :D

I can't be bothered to read 12 bacon-related pages, so if this has already been raised re the original post please forgive.
The British are afraid of muslims, eh? Does the original poster believe everything they read in the papers, or only that which fits with their insular world view? Another poster explained about the reliability of the Daily Mail.
A friend of mine works for the local authority involved (Stockport Council). The facts:
1. The planning permission is retrospective, in that the vent was placed without permission, and it is now being sought after a complaint by:
2. A non-muslim neighbour.
3. No decision about the incident has yet been made by the council.
4. Interestingly, the cafe owner IS a muslim, unlike the complainant. Don't see that little detail in the Daily Mail article, do we? Perhaps it does not fit in with their insular world view?

Can't be bothered? Sounds arrogant. "Don't have time", "more important things to do" are hardly better.

Sorry, can't be bothered.

Not getting enough bacon products today Steve? :03:
Anyhow I am vegetarian too, was actually raised as one. Though I did go through an experimental period (mainly when I studied to be a French Chef, and a few times earlier), I pretty much reverted back after a few years as it was simpler for me and saves me the moral/ethical headaches (I have huge ethical issues with current farming & fishing practices, particularly the factory farms).
So as for starting a vegetarian thread with recipes, I am game. I can supply a ton of non-substitute recipes (I HATE veg recipes which scratch out the word meat and write in tofu instead). In fact I think Ill get it started after this post.
I recently spent 10 days staying at a friends place in wales - he's a vegetarian and would not let us cook any meat in his house. We were there doing some building work to help him out. Most of the food we ate was veggie. As a confirmed omnivore, I don't mind the alternatives to proper meat, but I did find a noticeable lack of energy/warmth that I don't normally experience. Not to mention some of the worst windy-pops ever :o
We had several trips to the nearest town for macdonalds burgers (not the best, but better than no meat whatsoever).
Unless that guy was really screwing up (which is possible), your problem was likely psychosomatic (in your head). Veg food has a ton of energy (carbs, fats, & sugars) unless it's like all leafy greens. Protein actually is one of the hardest things for the body to process and excessive quantities (aside from nitrogen poisoning) will make you feel exhausted (common problem with body builders who don't understand nutrition and take way to much protein). The best energy sources are the sugars family (including carbs) and fats, both offer high amounts of energy, and are cleanly metabolized.
As for the gas, ya that's a problem, especially with high fiber diets.
I'm almost as non-vegetarian as Tony Bourdain. That said, I could almost imagine being a vegetarian in India. There were periods in Nepal where I was effectively vegetarian, and I absolutely craved meat. Even a fried egg was like having a steak after a while.
Still, having good vegie recipes would be really useful since I do have vegetarian friends, and I'd like to have "foodie" stuff on the table for them, too.
Funny story. Knew a vegetarian guy (from NYC) who loved asian food. We went out to a vietnamese place, and he got tyhe vegetarian spring rolls. The spring rolls indeed had no meat in them. He's dipping the things in nam pla, lol.
I didn't say anything. He'd been eating such food for years, and it had never occurred to him that the thin "sweet/sour" sauce he always got was fish juice.
A friend who is a more careful vegetarian said it's hard because many thai and vietnamese places call it vegetarian if there is no chunks of meat (or seafood) in the dish, but since fish sauce is their salt... it never occurs to them not to put THAT in. There's really no such thing as thai food without it...

Ha i lieved with a guy who was a fishetarian. Fine that was his decision but myself I like everything. Now we had to live together as we both worked for the same school in Moscow and when ever I cooked bacon he had to make snooty comments about how it smelled...as if his fish that he did sometimes didn't smell.
That's what bugs me about some vegetarians..most i have know are cool and don't mind if I cooked meat but I have known a few who were real nazis.
not getting at you neon, but I can understand where jumpy was coming from.

Oh no worries mate :) I just wanted to address a common misconception that vegetarians have energy problems (the weak pasty tree-hugger image). As for that guy, well I can understand his desire to keep the stuff out of his home. Some vegetarians find the stuff very offensive (to the point of making them feel physically ill).
I have to admit I generally do not care for the smell of cooking meat, and I really dislike the smell of fish (that rotting mucous smell). But then I have also had some really bad experiences in the restaurant industry.
I've also known plenty of non vegetarian who are equally nazi-esque in their attitudes and behaviour. Your diet is not what makes you an ass****. ;)

If you do not want to have any contact with meat products, you almost have to avoid eating out. It is very difficult to avoid in most kinds of restaurants. They may coat pans with lard, or use meat stocks, or the pile of other ways you can have it present. Good Chinese restaurants are a bit better as they do have a long history of vegetarian cooking with some of the Buddhist sects. Some of the Thai stuff doesn't have fish sauce though, but ya you gotta watch it.

I remember back in teh day that the vegetarian option on British menus was some variant of a nut roast.
There are a lot of veggy things I like.

I read somewhere, that GB has the highest percentage of vegetarians from all western countries. Regarding the choice of british supermarkets and restaurants, I tend to believe so.
However peas with mint are not a vegetarian dish, they are a crime against humanity!

I meant the guy Jumpy was referring to, not your flat mate as I don't think he had any right to complain. I can't think of anything worse smelling then old fish.
