GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- Crystal Cathedral, the megachurch birthplace of the televangelist show "Hour of Power," filed for bankruptcy Monday in Southern California after struggling to emerge from debt that exceeds $43 million.

In addition to a $36 million mortgage, the Orange County-based church owes $7.5 million to several hundred vendors for services ranging from advertising to the use of live animals in Easter and Christmas services.

A coworker and I think it should be turned into a strip club. Shame it's not on indian land, it would make an awesome casino.

Here's a thought. If this monstrosity was claiming tax exempt status for religous reasons (no reason why they wouldn't), do they still get protection under chapter 11?

Yes sir.. this is best news i've heard awhile! I know, i know, I shouldn't be grinning, should i? lol. Well, i am! I'm such a terrible person! :rotfl2:

As an aside, some nifty pictures of this abominations "humble" beginnings:

"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites [are]: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward."

Even when I was a devout believer I hated ostentation. A building like that serves no purpose but to inflate the ego of the one who had it built.

I think the Prayer Spire would make a great looking ICBM.

Raoul: And over here is our church.

Fry: Wow. You guys worship an unexploded nuclear bomb?

Vyolet: Yeah, but nobody's that observant. It's mainly a Christmas and Easter thing.

"Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones!"

Maybe they could turn it into a green house. They could grow pot to bring in the money! A "higher" power indeed!:|\\

I dunno man, they'd have to pay homage to a heathen god:

no different to those others that use their faith for greed. Benny hinn is another. We have our very own televangelist - The destiny church who have now spread their word to Australia. Warning to Aussies avoid Destiny Church like the plague.

You need to have mafia connections, money laundring, realestate embezelment and shady financing to avoid bankrupcy. In other words, you need to be a roman catcholic church

If religion merges with business, both merge for a result of business exclusively, with any religious claim or intention gone.
