I just had an amazing patrol where I sunk 82,000 tons!! Thus, before my question, a quick story: The first was a lone medium cargo -- easy prey for my deck guns. All the others came from a large convoy. It is October, 1939 (just started a new career) and the convoy had only a single escort. At first, I played the silent game, and had two different sneak attack encounters, both sinking a few ships. On the second, I hit HMS Revenge (a WW1 BB) which was in convoy formation and easy prey!

On my third pass at the convoy, with just 3 fish left, I was spotted by the only lead destroyer. Instead of hiding though, my brave captain decided to take him on. The destroyer did get my exact position before I submerged, so was circling an area pinging for me. As he came around my aft, I fired. Aft torpedo missed. He came around again, this time finding my periscope just before he came into 0 degrees -- I took the punishment and fired two torpedoes. Both hit, and sunk him immediately! After that, well, I was licking my chops, expending every last bit of ammo my boat had! How fun! :)

Now my question. I decided to use Sub Commander to give my crew awards, etc (I'm also using GWX 3). In the stock game, I can only give ONE qualification per patrol. In Sub Commander, I seemed to have an unlimited amount?? I tried to stay "modest" and "only" gave out six qualifications, but it seems like cheating?? Anyway, I also had lots of iron cross's, etc, available, when the stock game had only awarded me 4. When I reload into the stock game after giving out five Iron cross's 2nd class, I see the game still gives me the 4 I won. Is this working as designed?

Everyone has their own system as to exactly how many Quals and rewards to give out. Yes, SH3Cmdr allows an "unlimited" amount - thus it is totally up to you how you want to play it out. Most of us research the real life requirements, and base our decisions on that - and a heavy dose of roleplay!

As SH3Cmdr is an app outside of the actual game, it's changes are directly to the files, and thus the game doesn't "see" them. You can either ignore the ingame award screen, or use it and then once you are out and in SH3Cmdr amplify on that. Either way is "correct" - it's YOUR game!

Here is something to consider: There is no such thing as an unqualified petty officer. Every sailor is a PO in training, and a rate in training. In the US navy they are described by rating - Radioman 1st class, Machinists Mate 3rd class etc. The German terminology is different, but the effect is the same. Once a man has come far enough along to be called something, it's because he is that something.

The first thing I do at the start of a new career is to run a false patrol. I take a quick tour of the harbor and exit the patrol. This lets me do two things - first, it means my career doesn't always start at the first of the month, and second, All my petty officers are properly qualified. It's the Navy way. :sunny:

On some incredible feat was accomplished on the patrol like sinking a BB, flat top, or one of the times when they did something else extraordinary like sink 50,000 tons in a single patrol the captain usually got his RK, and then the entire crew was awarded an EK2 (or EK1 for the few that already had an EK2 previously). You could maybe count the number of times such events where the entire crew was given an EK2/EK1 on two hands. Of hand would say it happened maybe 7 or 8 times total that an entire crew was decorated simultaneously at the end of a patrol.

Another example of such an (real) event was from a minelaying mission done at Portsmouth that was so successful that it caused the British to close the harbor down and bring in minesweepers to clean it up after it sunk at least 2 big ships and damaged a couple more. Was done in either late 39 early 40 and am almost to 42 in the book right now, can't remember the exact details without flipping through it :P

Actually, I believe there is no such thang as an unqualified sailor above the rank of Matrose - and as the lowest rank allowed in SH3 is Matrosengefreiter ALL of my crew have Quals - if for no other reason (as SS stated) than to show what he is trained on and thus which compartment he should be assigned. YMMV .....

And remember... for game play purposes:

You can give three quals to officers and they all work
Only one qual to POs works
No qual for a sailor works
Helmsman qual does not work
Radioman qualification for officers does not work.
