I'm practising manual targeting right now and while overall I think I'm getting hang of it, from time to time my torpedoes steam in totally unexpected direction. Most glaring example was when I fired on previously damaged ship - target speed 0, bearing 0, and the torpedo goes off at about 15 degree angle from my boat's axis... I clicked "X" on notepad to delete previous input (thought this may be the case), tried once more and once again she steams in some weird direction.

Probably I'm doing something very basic very wrong, but I'm at a loss what exactly... so, how to reliably "reset" the torpedo settings?

Next time that situation comes up, hit F6 to go the TDC screen, and check the settings. Alternatively, you could "become" the weapon officer and check the TDC in the boat. For a ship that is stopped that you are abeam of, the settings should be AOB 90 (doesn't matter if port or starboard if the ship is stopped), speed 0.

Learning to use the TDC manually helped me to understand the AoB/bearing and the whole targeting process better. Notebook just got me confused.

Check the gyroangle before firing.
If you are turned towards the enemy ship (more or less) and gyroangle says something like 050 you know you got something wrong.

I had some nooby failures shooting static ships before I realised that I need to input the range too unless I'm shooting exactly towards bearing 0.
