View Full Version : Not Sure About Managing Crew?
I've just recently picked up SH3 and am not really accustomed to how it works. I have GWX3 and some of it's associated mods installed. I've had SH4 for a couple of years and should have used it more than I have, but I'm wondering if crew management in SH3 is more involved than in SH4? Can I just click the icon that says surface cruise or submerged attack as required and be done with it, or is it required to move the crew around manually? It seems most of them spend their time in bow & stern quarters. Should I be filling up all the other compartments with these lazy sailors?

DO NOT USE THOSE ICONS, they are a repeated source of ctd's.
If I were you I'd keep it simple and use the 'no fatigue' option that comes with SH3 Commander.

Crew management is a big dilemma for me.
1) In real life (and thus aiming for "reality" in the game), a skipper would not be micro-managing crew bedtimes. A watch bill (duty roster) would be set up long before leaving port, and the junior officers would have ensured it was kept. Thus, I opt for "no fatigue".
2) But "no fatigue" means no one gets tired. You can put Petty Officer Köhl in the hydrophone shack and he will sit there happily for your entire 55-day patrol. Obviously unrealistic.
Ideally, you would be able to set up port and starboard watches, or 3 watches, so that you had a rotating watch bill. But I am sure someone would have modded that ages ago if that was possible.
For now, I am sticking with the uncomfortably unrealistic option of "no fatigue."

lol. Used them loads of times never had CTD's after using them. It seems to me no one here can save underwater, near a ship, near land, listen to gramophone and use those buttons except me :smug:
What you should do with the crew is just leave them alone for the time being. When you don't need torpedoes reloaded left click on the quarters and right click on the torpedo room to move everyone out and double click the torpedo room when you need the reloaded. Do the same double click when someone has a red "!" sign on them to get them to rest automatically. Not really that hard I think and gives me something to do while going back home.

I looked at that and thought "Hmmm :hmmm:" and then I looked at your join date and decided "he's in for an education :know:."
If a 5%-10% chance of a CTD is OK with you, by all means -- save under water or in port.
Maybe it depends like other stability issues on your version (starforce, official starforce-free, inofficial starforce-free,...)

A good choice, and a good reason.

And that's why, though I hate the SH3 crew management I still use it. I just can't seem to stop the feeling that if they don't move around every four hours I'm not doing my job.

SH4 fixed that to have them automatically rotate shifts. On the other hand they broke the part with the gunners, so in the newer game you have to move them to their stations. :damn:
For now, I am sticking with the uncomfortably unrealistic option of "no fatigue."
Which, as I said, I recommend but can't seem to make myself use it.
<sigh>

55 days without a break, what a cabbage

The only variable that I've experienced that seems to give you a 50% or better chance of having a successfull underwater save is if you have 100.00% hull strength. Have had to savegames in emergencies (rl) where had to leave or shut my laptop off and that was my only option. Still when loading that savegame its a Russian Roulette even with the odds raised slightly in your favor.
I have reloaded several times right in the middle of convoy battles. Yesterday I was forced to do so after the game crashed on me [the first crash in six patrols after installing the 4GB patch] and upon reload it worked fine. I've been quite lucky in this respect, but I avoid such reloads if possible as I do not wish to tempt Neptune's wrath. Only when forced to.
