View Full Version : Retired seaman builds his own U-boat
A retired British seaman has built his own U-boat by converting a canal barge. The writer of the article is blind, as it resembles nothing like a WW2 U-boat, but have a look for yourself:

From the comments:
Is this the coalitions new version of trident???

I am looking forward to a model aircraft enthusiast building a to-scale replica of an RAF Shorts S.25 Sunderland to depth charge it.

Beat me to it, frau kaleun!
I sure the RN is now thinking of adding it to the fleet!

Dont think the canal is quite deep enough for a crash dive:har:

Flabbergasted anglers have been falling over their fishing rods as the 70ft vessel bobs past them.
Its top speed is 3mph and the only way it would be able to dive is by springing a hole in the side.

We'll probably cancell the sister ships to the Astute Class seeing as how this vessel will be cheaper
And we Canucks will probably buy the old RN subs and have them burn up on the way over here. There's nothing like a bargain, eh?

I agree. This is NOT a replica of an Uboat , not even a XXI.
One more thing: There was never a U-8047 boat (uboat.net search)
This man has done a remarkable effort though and he did spent a lot of money doing it.
Can you imagine the faces of those who first saw it sailing in the canal?
Seen other pictures of it in motion in papers
After spending all that money. why steer from the 'narrow boat tiller'? I'd have rigged it to operate from the conning tower.
I admire the old boy for what he did. It is not him that is making the claims that it is a replica U-boat; that is the work of the lemmings in the Press. They are so abysmally weak on history that I hang my head in despair when I read most articles written by graduates of modern "journalism" schools these days. At least, though, the writer didn't call it a "Nazi sub" fifty times. As far as the non-historical number, I'm pretty sure he knew that was not a number corresponding to a real U-boat. He probably chose it for reasons not mentioned in the article. I wish him all the best with his new toy. I'd love to rent it for a convention/party of SH3 groupies. We could all dress up in our leathers and sing Village People songs like, "In the Navy." The "Navy Dude" guy from Subsim would probably show up.

haha re-read the article for fun.
It looks just like one of the feared attack vessels that sank 3,000 Allied ships during the Second World War.
had me cracking up. :har::haha:
