View Full Version : General Age of Sub Simmers?

Ok, one of my friends clams that only old people play submarine simulations.
He says that even hardcore flight sims and wargames appeal more to teens.
So please tell me your age, I want to know if this is true
Truthfully please(On the forums i moderate i pretend to be a 19 year old girl hacker who lives in Sweden)

Dishonest moderators are usually poor ones. I'm not saying that you are a poor moderator, only that you must be honest with the members if you expect them to be honest, and remain honest with you.

I'm 33. Joined SubSim 10 years ago. Started playing submarine simulators in my teens.

Most of the old movies you talk about, I saw in the theater. I picked up my first guitar in 1965. I saw the Beatles live in 1966. I was in Vietnam in 1970. Married in 1974. Divorced in 1985. My older daughter is about to turn 31. Her 'baby' sister is 28, and has given me two grandkids. I started playing tabletop wargames in 1973. My first subsim was Silent Service in 1986. On the other hand I still play rock 'n' roll and the blues, and some country, jazz, folk, and anything else I feel like.

I'm also absolutely honest about everything I do. The only reason I have a screen name is because when I first came here even Neal had one. I no longer pretend to be anything, excepting maybe human.

What can I say? I'm 60.

ps. Every Thursday night I play a truly hardcore flight sim, which involves pushing trolleys around on the floor of the local hobby shop, with model airplanes.

I'm 31 and started sub simming with Silent Hunter 2 and sub command ten years ago.

Joined subsim under different name somewhere in 2000-2002 if memory doesn't fail me but have since lost the account. Have since started going back as forum member from 2006

Started flight simming about 7 years earlier.

You know it's not true that only old people play subsim while younger ones play flightsim.
Just that sub sim titles are hard to come by and not everyone would want to take a try at them.
It's like when we were teen and we prefer to seek out and get attracted to the opposite sex teenagers but after a while(or maybe a long while) you just realize mature women could become more appealing than younger opposite sex. It's part of growing.
It's not the women or the female teenagers who have changed but your realization and perspective.

The general scene of opposite sex attraction is like
1. Male teenagers under 20s spotting a few hot or pretty teenagers->They go all crazy and without restraint to their explicit behavior about it I mean just by looking at them
2. Male young in his 20s spotting hot or pretty girl->They have a crush inside but show more explicit restraint
3. Male mid age in his 30s above spotting hot or pretty women-> Ummm...., Meh

When you're psychologically in category number 3 even when it doesn't mirror your biological age you're ready for sub simming LOL

Subsim is just more refined and takes more dedication and passion than the explosive flight simming in general.

Most of the old movies you talk about, I saw in the theater. I picked up my first guitar in 1965. I saw the Beatles live in 1966. I was in Vietnam in 1970. Married in 1974. Divorced in 1985. Hello, my name is razark, and I'm 34.

I've been a subsimmer since I was 8 years old. It all started when I got my hands on something called Gato:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e2/Gatoshot.png

It worked for a while, but then I started finding new and better subsims.
Silent Service, Red Storm Rising, 688 Attack Sub, Silent Service II, etc.

I just turned 46 a month ago.

I've been playing subsims since I was... 45. :D

Never did much gaming of any kind when I was a teenager, unless you count playing Trivial Pursuit with my dad. And watching Jeopardy to see who could yell out the correct answer first. And the occasional game of checkers. (Chinese checkers if we were feeling adventurous.)

Of course we didn't have personal computers back then, and I doubt I would have been into combat sims of any kind even if they were available.

But I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now. :O:

I've just turned 45 and have been playing sub sims only a few months, been playing all types of games however for decades. These days apart from Silent hunter 3 I play Flight Sims, Arma 2 and still enjoy a good ole game of Medieval 2 from time to time.

So you see? We're not all old folk....

Nah sometimes life doesn't deserve the commitment and serious effort that we've put in. When I realize crooks could be well praised and respected I know life is not to be taken seriously.

But still life is a blessing despite the many wrongs that are going on around us. Trying to enjoy what life we have and to be comfortable with ourselves is more than enough.

In the words of one of my lecturer she said something like The world is not fair and to accept that.
She got it wrong I'm sure and convinced even convicted. It's men who are unfair because men are fallible. Life is fair. It may need courage and faith to look it that way but life is fair when you know death isn't the finish line. To the sight(figure) I behold when I was a kid back a year after I was shown Christ then whose face shone beyond everything....what a power, what a Godly body, what a life!

Your buddy is right though about subsims appeal to a generally older crowd.
In 2001 I used to work for a company which provided telephone support for Ubisoft, (their support was outsourced back then) Every guy who called with SH2 Issues sounded no younger than 50, I kid you not! One of them evern told me he was a retired Officer in the Royal Navy.
Being 21 and an avid gamer, I was actually dead impressed that there were gamers out there in the same age group as my parents, I remember thinking 'good for you', when I spoke to an older guy :)

I'm 36.

My first sight of a subsim was SHII, on a mate's laptop in Iraq in 2003, played it for hours to while away the quiet nights. Thought about it early this year and bought SH3 thinking that's what I'd played before(two years before release!), stumbled amongst these wonderful folk here and have never looked back (or forward!).

Used to be a FS freak, from 98, 2000, 02, 04, and now X, and X-Plane 8 which I never got the hang of. Before that it was A320 on an Amiga :DL

Had my PS phase too, but I'm over that now apart from the odd blast on NFS with my stepson.

I don't speak, or read, any form of Chinese :nope:

46.

First sub game was 'Silent Service' which I thought was total utter crap lol. If you google SS your see it has an average score of 8 which is good and is highly rated by fans. I hated it and thought after playing that the PC will never ever be the platform for sub games. :haha: Well I got that wrong.
Some time later I brought Aces of the Deep & SH1 Those two games sealed my interests in sub sims for the PC.

My first subsim was actually the board game "submarine" by avalon hill which I played in the late 70s/early 80s. My first computer subsim was Jane's 688i HK around 1999. The only subsim I still play is DW, although I have not tried the latest LWAMI mod yet.

My first sub sim was probably Silent Service on NES -- I remember playing that for entire weekends at a friend's house. Somewhere along the line I got hooked on Microprose' F-117 Nighthawk, and CONFMEPS. I fell in love with simulations and strategy games, and ever since then it's been a round-robin of naval sim, strategy and flight sim.

My first sub sim was an antisub sim (and the term sim is used very liberally) called Code Name Sector

Anyone else remember that one? I thought this was the greatest game ever. And it had a "computer" ohhhhh

I have fond memories of Gato, Sub battle and Silent Service. Boy these games were the bestest when they first came out huh? :yeah:
