its a video of fake injuries and dives.

some of which are blatantly obvious. others are terrible over acting.

they are like children throwing tantrums to get mommy's attention.

why is there the need to do this?

It has to be football but let's be fair here....it is probably the biggest sport in terms of numbers of countries and participants throughout the world.

no doubt about it

but whats with the theatrics?

you just dont see "American Footballers" mysteriously tripping and pointing at an opposing player some 5 feet away while feigning agony and holding their stomach or head etc.

im not implying its a nationality thing... but a sport thing overall.

why the need for dives?

is there some sort of advantage offered by it? do people believe this garbage?

does mysteriously flopping down onto the ground and rolling around as if you had been shot in the groin by some unseen foe help win the game?

Exactly the reason I don't watch football, ridiculous. :nope:

Gamesmanship gone haywire, I guess.

does mysteriously flopping down onto the ground and rolling around as if you had been shot in the groin by some unseen foe help win the game?If it gets your side a penalty kick, then yes it does offer an advantage.

Worldwide, I'd say European football.

In the US, professional basketball:

Football (soccer) is prone to this thing because of the structure of the game.

A single goal can be a very big deal in this game. Getting a good free kick, or better yet, a penalty, by means of a well acted dive can set up goals.

It is particularly the case when a forward is being tackled by a defender, close to the goal, in situations where it is clear that the defender has successfully shut off the attack and there is no major chance of a shot on target this time. Diving becomes best option.

Coupled with this, is that in almost all cases there is no penalty for diving, except in the most blatant cases. In general, the worst that happens to the diver is that he has failed to win a free kick or penalty.

So the situation with the diving issue is that can be summed up as a low risk to high potential reward activity.

There is possibly a cultural component that determines how willing players are to do this sort of thing, but the cost-reward equation is such that it is nonetheless common even with countries like England that officially deplore the activity.

sissies

I strongly disagree. :stare:
Following what happened at the last world cup, I was thinking none would doubt French soccer players redefine the meaning of "sissies". :D

Of the footballers it seems to be the mediterranean nations who dive and wimp the most.

I generally can't stand football. I prefer my motor racing.

It's definately NOT Rugby League

You gotta love a sport where the players duct-tape their ears to their heads to keep 'em from getting ripped off. :D

It's a huge problem over here, I'm a massive football fan and of course, my teams players (Blackburn Rovers) never dive. Never mind that footage of El Haj Diouf diving in that video whilst wearing a rovers shirt :O: Most players usually dive when they are facing the "last man" as they are heading towards the defenders. If the defender brings them down in an unfair way it's a straight red card so most players who haven't got the decency to know when they've been beaten, will dive and hope to get the other player sent off. The worst thing that can happen to them is a yellow card. I hate diving, but now thanks to twats like Cristiano Ronaldo, all you see when you see kids playing the beautiful game is six year olds chucking themselves on the floor like father christmas has been too handsy with them. It's plagued football for years, but give it another 10 years and the way things are going and the way most of the children emulate their stars, football will be a non contact sport very soon.
