View Full Version : I don't like my boat!
Having only 5 torpedoes really sux. I looked through the GWX manual but can't find a reference to when I'd get an upgrade. For some reason the idea of starting a career in the "middle" of the war, didn't seem right and figured I could suffer for a bit. When can I expect to get a better load of weapons?? :o

Start your career in the 2nd Flotilla out of Wilhelmshaven and you'll begin with a Type VIIB
You may not be offered another boat until you have accumulated enough renown to purchase one. The lower your difficulty settings, the longer it will take you to accumulate the required renown. If you do not wish to wait, you could simply start a new career in a different flotilla that has the boat you wish to use. SH3 Commander allows you to choose the flotilla and boat of your choice. It has been so long since I played without it that I cannot even remember if the stock game allows you to do this.

Nothing wrong with the Type II, it makes you select targets more carefully. I've had some good patrols in one, but if thats not your thing you could always go for a Type IX.

Yes Stock allows you to choose flotilla, but not you boat..but technically since boat is dependent on which flotilla you pick then you can pick your boat....so yea,, if that makes any sense.

Gonna have to second this one. I actually *PREFER* the Type II's, the only limitation that irks me about the kleineboot is that you can't go as deep as the bigger boats.

You can learn so much about stealth and tactics with a II that I think any beginner is cheating himself/herself to try to instantly jump to at VII or IX. If you can't patrol successfully with the limitations a II presents, then, paradoxically, you are probably going to find the better-equipped VII even more difficult.

I started my current series of careers (Aug 39) in a type II out fo Kiel. Whilst I'm glad of the skills it helped me develop, I was glad to be rid of it once I had the opportunity to upgrade. I watched far too many damaged ships sail away from me whilst I shadowed them with empty torp tubes for my liking.

Btw. Is there a lightmap for VIIb, like those by Flakmonkey for VIIc and IIa?
Hi everyone. (first post!) :salute:
Just started a new career with type II and I love the tiny sub.
I'm biased though when it comes to the boat because it's the only submarine I have seen in RL.
Finnish Type II "Vesikko" currently serves as a museum ship in Suomenlinna (open during summertime) and I visited it when I was just a kid. It did not look so small back when I was around 8 years old!
She is the only remaining type II submarine in the world by the way.

I saw a picture spread of that sub on U-boat.net (19 pics). I wish I could afford to go see it in real life. :) http://www.uboat.net/gallery/index.html?gallery=Vesikko

WELCOME ABOARD, arctic! :sunny:
Nice to see someone else who likes the Type II. I just like the older, more primitive hardware. In SH4 it's the 'S' class for me.
Many of us are very familiar with Vesikko, and some members in the past have posted many photographs of her.

Amazing forum you guys have. I was more than supprised to see that game as old as SH3 had such a active forum and loyal community. I'm very glad to join you.

Kaleuns follow along...everybody.
If you don't know what to do, then its training for you, in a type two, fits like glove and bobs like a dutch wooden shoe.
But when your at sea you will get quite dizzy, bobbing about, just listen to me.......
you will get a bit pissed and throw up your fists when your torpedo missed cause you only have three!
The u boat you want is like a sports car, go for the VII cause its driven by the stars. It can go deep where you can creep, away from the cans that want to blow you apart!
You will be just like Prein, ya know what I mean, in this submarine that's a German piece of art.
In the type IX you should do just fine as long as you don't have to dive they will never take you alive. It can be found by sonar whether near or really far, its just to large like an undersea barge!:haha:

Personally I love the guppy sub. Having to go through the Kiel canal is a pain, so I usually transfer with it to Wilhelmshaven for a shorter round trip. But the type II really is perfect for the North Sea.

The Type II is a good boat to cut your teeth on http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
Lot of great captain's got their first commands with one of the 'ducks'. Operationaly they weren't sent west of the North Sea that often due to their small opertaing range, the type II's have their distinct flavor and appeal; just like the type IX's. Some like the smaller and more restrictive characteristics of the II's that make them a challenge while other's prefer the Cadillac size and comforts of the IX's.
I prefer the IX Boats as I like to go further out to sea, yes its got lots of ells but I don't waste them on small ships. :)

I prefer the IX types (IXB and IXC) better than the VIIB/C types. They have longer range , more torpedoes meaning more tonnage. They also have a larger deck gun , which is good for the early stages of the war.
Indeed , they can be spotted easier but they have stronger hulls and can take more damage (not though a hedgehog hit).

The II are nice. I do not mind starting with them. I like to get a feel for every boat. The IID has a fast dive time. Once U get to the VII boats U will be with them awhile unless going for a big one. Cherish the times in the II's.
