View Full Version : Goodbye to SH3 on W7

I can't take it anymore. Today I lost another career, or rather gave up on it after another patrol experienced more crashes in one day than the entire Kamikaze fleet off of Okinawa. I had high hopes that W7-64 on my new notebook would run fine, but I can't take the crashes any more, especially after you just torpedo a couple of ships and the game decides to CTD. Is it my hardware, the OS, the game? I can't take it anymore.

But all is not lost. I still have two XP desktops capable of running it well, GWX all the way, of course. And, I'll not be abandoning this forum. My wife will be glad now that she will not be hearing torpedo explosions from my side of the bed.

Beano before dinner. I'm just sayin'. :O:

Glad you've got another rig to play on, would hate to see you give up on the game entirely. I enjoy your contributions here. :salute:

I think I'm lucky in that department. Beans don't repeat on me for some reason. And I'm glad you like my posts; I also enjoy yours. :salute:

Lol - doesn't have to be beans... Beano is a product that, shall we say, belays the digestive order to Feuer Frei no matter what you've eaten.

Not that I would know, since I'm a lay-dee and we are genetically incapable of producing any such emissions. :O:

Yeah, my wife saves up until night time and then blows ballast in her sleep. She thinks she's in silent running mode, but I am an elite GWX DD.

Thats a good one; I might save it for future reference :har::har:

Glad ya'll liked that one. My wife is English and somewhat self-conscious about bodily sounds. The odd time she lets one go in the daytime she apologizes for it. I try to tell her that it's just like burping, but it doesn't help. She also doesn't sweat, merely perspires. Myself as a simple Canuck colonial, I am full of crude and vulgar habits.

1. May be the best description I have ever seen or read for this function!
2. A very wise choice to continue playing and staying with us.

Re your problem with W7 64, try to find and use the 4gb patch to be applied on the SH3 exe file.
IIRC, I found this tip somewhere in the LSH3 V5 thread in the SH3 Workshop forum.
Everything works fine since then and also can be applied to other old games which have problem handling the 4Gb RAM.
Sorry don't have the time to dig for it, but I'm rather sure it's in that thread.

Excellent! Thank you to both of you for mentioning and finding this. I am going to give it a try. It would be a shame to have this top end rig and not be able to use it for SH3. This is my first 8 GB system and it runs everything else just fine. If I can get SH3 running on it in a stable manner then I will be a happy Kaleun.

I have only run SH3 on Win 7 64-bit, so I can't compare it to another Windows OS, but I did notice a decrease in crashes after using the 4GB patch. It's been in use for nearly 2 months now.

Will this patch work on systems with 8 GB or more? Do I have to physically set up the Windows page file to 4 GB of virtual RAM?

One other thing: I use SH3 Commander to launch my game. Using the 4 GB patch mods the SH3.exe file. Would I be correct in assuming that Commander still uses the same SH3.exe file to launch the game? It would seem logical to assume so, but you know the old saying, "Assumption is the mother of all ..."

You need do no more than point it to the SH3 exe file.

From the link:

This very little tool patches x86 executables in order to let them have 4GB (instead of only 2) of virtual memory on x64 platforms. This tool comes very handy for applications which need a great amount of virtual memory like games, 3D renderization, multimedia etc. To gain these 2GB, you just have to use this tool to patch the executable (*.exe file) of the software you want to have these additional GBs of virtual memory. It can be used by clicking on it and choosing the file or through command line (e.g.: "4gb_patch file.exe"). It automatically creates a backup copy of the original executable.

I reinstalled SH3 and my mods, then applied the patch. No crashes yet, but I need to test it over many hours to reach a conclusion. One weird thing I noted, when I exit the game I get the message from Windows about the program no longer working, but since it happens after I exit the game it doesn't affect anything.

Things seem fine, although I did sink a Granville freighter in the Hebrides and received no entry in my logbook. I was surfaced and pounding her with the deck gun to finish her off after taking a torpedo; she sank and as I was watching her go under a patrol craft came along. I dove and left the area, but no credit for the sinking.

I am pleased to report that I have successfully concluded my first patrol, with no CTD's though I always get the "SH3 has stopped working" message after exiting the game. I also saved, exited and reloaded several times with no problems. Continuous testing will tell me if this tweak works for me. Fingers crossed...

It seems your wife will need to get used to the sound of explosions coming from your side of the bed again.:D

Aye, there is that possibility again. In any event, I should get my gaming desktop up to scratch again, if only to enjoy the larger display.

I am pleased to report that I have now conducted three career patrols with the 4GB patch installed and have had no CTD's, although one saved game screwed up on loading. I did have multiple saves for the same patrol so I loaded a previous save; all I lost was a few hours of patrol time, during which there was no action, so there was no real loss at all. I make a habit of having five saves per patrol which I cycle through and overwrite from time to time. Before and after any significant game event I save.

Glad to see it's now working on your rig. In the old days I remember it was a common advice not to handle more than 3 saves at any time, although I don't remember quite well the reason for it. I stick to it and can't remember a CTD
either on my XP Pro sytem or on my laptop with W7/64.
A good rule was also to save only surfaced or when only your sub is there. (Although I must say on some circumstances I had to save in the middle of a convoy tracking or even submerged in the middle of a destroyer attack and never had any problem reloading... may be I was just lucky...)
