Can someone recommend a good beginner sub game that requires very little technical skill, just to get started (and good graphics)? What I would love to do is to easily be able to look through the scope and shoot passing ships and also shoot boats or planes whiles surfaced. This would be an introduction game for me. Someone gave me Sub Command and I could not make heads or tails out of it. I look forward to your suggestions.

Ehm, think they released a new arcade one not too long ago. Don't recall much about it though, not even the title, but I'm sure there's someone around that does.
The Battlestations games might interest you too, though it's focused on surface combat. Subs are in there, but very basic control and no real way to target. Think there's a demo for both Battlestations Midway and Pacific.

Theres a game on the 360 called Silent something or nother that's pretty much what you're asking for.
Also the battlestations games do have very basic sub components.

Jeesh, found it. That was a lot more difficult to find than expected.
Naval Assault: The Killing Tide (http://www.el33tonline.com/past/2010/4/1/505_games_set_to_launch/)
Should be exactly what you're looking for, but it's a 360 exclusive.

I don't know why I thought Silent was in its title. I swear there is a game out there called Silent something that is pretty much what he asked for.
:hmmm:

You sure it's not just because 9 out of 10 sub games have "silent" in the title? :06:
Just asking really, can't say I keep track of the more arcadey sub games.

For the PC, there's at least Enigma: Rising Tide and another game whose name I forgot.
EDIT: Ah, Steel Tide, I remembered this one existed, but I've never played it.

Maybe that's it.
He could also try Silent Hunter 5. The gameplay obviously has to be simple if it was on the 360. :haha:

Odd, after doing research apparently its not. But I swore that I saw something mentioning that it was coming to the 360 at some point. :hmmm:
Although it may have been people joking around.

I just found out that a friend of mine has Steel Tide. Would that be a good starter game? Also, instead of just pointing and shooting through the periscope, I would love to get into all the aspects of sub simulation. With that in mind, is there one single game you can recommend that would be the best to start? Thanks in advance for your help with what some may consider "stupid questions..."

Jump in at the deep end like I did with Silent Hunter 3 or 4. There's plenty of vid tutorials available on site to get you started.

I've no idea whether Steel Tide is good or not.
I think the best you can do is get Silent Hunter 3/4/(5? Maybe) straight away, in any case.

Agreed, just turn the realism down. Certainly manageable then. Far cry from the complexity of SubCom.

Yeah there was a lot of nonsense around SH5, the usual "it's so arcade" that accompanies every release, to name one thing.

Thanks for all the advice you have given me. I just purchased Silent Hunter III off Ebay for $6 (including S/H) and it is complete with manual(s) and maps. I read the reviews on several of the games you captains mentioned and the one thing that caught my eye with SH III was the Naval Academy which I thought would be very useful for a newbie such as myself. I just hope it is not to difficult to learn. Needless to say, I am excited about how much fun this game could be. Again, thanks!
