Before you judge remember that these people believed that we'd literally eat their babies. With your own death imminent could you surrender your own child to that fate?

I understand and respect their need for honour and all that stuff, but I doubt many things they did were honourable

It is war on the front lines, honour does not really come into play there, it's pure survival.

This is a good example of just how powerful the Japanese governments propaganda machine worked....especially on the lower classes within their system.
