View Full Version : Minor rant: Anime and gaming

Minor rant. I'm sick of anime inspired BS. Seriously. Are there that many people who pine over this crap? The school girl crap? Needs to go. The sailor outfits? They need to die. The *******ed up hair does with the massive pig tails, or hair that is seemingly impossible? Needs to be set afire.

If you play any RPG games, you'll run into this crap.. ALL the freaking time. Its tiring.

I mean, seriously.....
http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/images/392-1-1266007990.jpg

REALLY? So who exactly does one see through hair like that? Through one eye? What is this? Japan meets the rock group KISS? I suppose its better then the massive pigtails, but still.....

This crap here, encapsilates everything thats wrong with Japan. All were missing is tenticales shaped like penises. Why in the hell would anyone want to make a tolkenesque RPG setting look like this is well beyond me.

http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/images/855-1-1268355228.jpg

This crap, never ceases to make my eyes roll. Japanese anime idea for armor? Yeah.... I suppose if i was 14, didn't have a girlfriend, and spanked the monkey to a computer game or japanese cartoons. :nope:

So Just have to say.... Japanese Anime....SICK OF IT.

Anime art motiff is very distinctive, arguably a reflection on Japanese social quirks (and they've got a ton of em) and very tiresome. Really tired of this crap. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't pervade in so many areas of gaming. The more you look for mods.. the more you see it. Ughhhh.

I never could get the idea of anime in the first place... although I was a Tenchi Muyo fan back in the day. I'd have thought it was merely a passing fad but... unfortunately we're probably stuck with it until something even more revolting comes along to push anime games off to the dustiest corners of forgotten history. :dead:

Great screengrabs, btw. I'm assuming the armor is supplanted by some sort of magic - there's really nothing else protecting her bared areas.

....:hmmm:

And the bikini line is waaay off. :O::D

I haven't seen anything like that in a RPG so far, except as mods. :hmm2:
But I only play a handful of RPGs so it's quiet possible I missed something there.
From what game are those screenshots?

Never seen these models before.

But to answer the OP's question in two words "Sex Sells".

Don't like it, don't use it.

But yeah, like Steamwake says, Sex sells. Anime girls have a massive following so it's easy bucks to cater for that.

Hey could you mod these into SH4. What a crew I could have! :har: Sorry Duci...could not resist. But yeah, anime is just plain odd to me. To each their own.

FWIW, Tentacles (and associated other goings on) is from Hentai.:03:

Anime is just a Japanese art form, albeit a very stylised one.

What you have an issue with is not necessarily the attempted reproduction of the Anime style in a RPG but rather, what I call, the 'School Girl Syndrome' that most orientals suffer from.

Anyway, nothing wrong with some digitised eye candy.

The hell have the they done to Morrigan and Lelianna??? Blasphemy!

I personally love the manga style, but you're right, they need to give it a rest in video games. It works in 2d for cartoons and books, but not in 3d.

Yeah I know. But when your bored and you decided to look for some cool mods, and I start seeing more anime inspired BS, and less what I would call, "real attempts" i find myself slightly annoyed. But it wasn't just this game that bothered me. This rant of mine has steam gathered over 3 different games over the course of a few years. Seems like every freaking RPG game that has mods... you find a glut of anime/manga garbage. So then you have to sort out the real mods, from the garbage.

FWIW, Tentacles (and associated other goings on) is from Hentai.:03:

.

yes I know. Believe me i know. I work for an internet security and filtering corp. I've seen every bit of garbage the internet has to offer, for the last 10 years. You name it, ive seen it. Doesn't mean i like it, or get used to it all, or grow tired of seeing various crap.

But to answer the OP's question in two words "Sex Sells".

Ohhh i got a dilly for you then. You'll need to create and account to view it, but hell, someone made a mod and turned an RPG into a full on porno! That bit of ruckus from GTA some years back can't hold a candle to this user created content! :har:

NSFW. (http://www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=548) (Hell, may as well call it XXX rated )

Anyway, just venting. I never did see the draw to anime. I had a room mate drag me to some anime convention once in anahiem. Never did i see the largest collection of the mutants, freaks, and people with severe hormonal imbalances. You walked in and the first thing you were greeted with was a chorus of freaks in various costumes standing around and laughing.. over and over and over again. I looked at my room mate, with what must have been the most puzzled look on my face, and before i could say the words, "what the hell is that?!", he explained to me.. "oh thats the anime laugh......." Ummm hmmm... oooohhhh kaaayyy. I would not be surprised if he's still single. Guy never had a date or a girl while i knew him.

I said it sells I dident say I was buying it :haha:

I'm not very likely to create an account just to look at some digital boobies.

Besides as you probably know any site of that sort comes with risks...

Over the past 18 hours or so the Nexus sites have been sporadically serving a trojan file through the ads on the site. Thanks to the logs of a few astute members on the forums I was able to identify the source of the trojan attack and have hopefully now nullified it. The Nexus sites should, touch wood, no longer be serving these compromised ads any more.

Japanese anime idea for armor?
That goes all the way back to the '70s, when magazines and suplements for the original RPGs had paintings of sword-wielding women going into battle dressed like that.

Dragon magazine once featured a wonderful cartoon showing a woman warrior sitting in a tavern. She is wearing a chainmail bikini with several arrows stuck in the top and bottom, and saying to the guy sitting next to her "Good thing I had my armor on!"

Western games can be cute and cuddly just fine by themselves:

I really thought it was awesome everyone in my guild thought I was cute teen girl rather than, say, a muscular middle-aged man w/a shaved head. I mean, would you help a muscular middle-aged man on his quests? Of course not!!

Personally, i always thought that WoW was most definitely influenced by anime. Not a direct copy, but definitely influenced by it. Perhaps as foresight for appeal to the asian market?

At any rate, the pic there is sporting the anime like pigtails. Night elf hair styles also have simularities to anime.

Every action in an anime show is like overemphasized to the point of insanity. If a character takes a dump He has to do 4 backflips through messed up air and come down screaming pounding his fist into the ground and making the ground split in two. for a dump. And they all look like crack addicts with those bug eyes and gravity/all physics-defying hairdo.

its the mental projection of what a normal human does from a mentally insane, high-as-a-kite-in-a-hurricane, brain dead, banzaaaaaaiiiiiiii-type japanese dude who had FUBAR brain surgery from a nutless monkey, and this japanese dude melted a cookie and injected it into his bloodstream. Aaaaaaand he has
Schizophrenia and the IQ of a 6 year old african child living faaaar away from any kind of civilization.

Remember one side of the magazine was Dragons (for players), when you flipped the mag over the other side was Dungeons (for DM's).

Wasn't Red Sonja was it?:hmmm:

The only thing that can be said is that the Japanese have a very strange attitude to women.

For example, take Ghost in the Shell, in it's various guises. Major Kusanagi is meant to be the field commander of an elite counter terrorism unit. But the way the character is designed, she's the series' eye candy. Looks like a supermodel in a skintight outfit, but is able to command a bunch of burly men?

I always find it highly amusing that in the first season of the "Stand Alone Complex" tv series, she starts out in what is effectively a basque, but by the end, thay actually had her wearing trousers! That's a bit unusual by anime standards!

Now, have a look at this:http://pitroad.s232.xrea.com/soreyuke/

I feel sorry for any Japanese woman trying to build a career in the Defence Forces if they're reduced to that!

Pretty broad statement seeing there is very little more than a CINEMATIC trailer released. :)

Japan does seem to be, from an outsiders point of view, a very male orientated country, and their anime and manga does tend to reflect that, however exposure to western media and attitudes is swinging the balance in the media.

Visual kei...always makes me think of an episode of Excel Saga.
Still I have my favourites and there are several Japanese songs on my MP3 player, Yoko Kanno is a particularly good artist, and of course we can't forget the legend that is Nobuo Uematsu. :yeah:

That stuff gives RPG a bad rep. Actually, role-play games aren't all about fantasy crud. Now the term RPG has become synonymous with that.

Role play is a great pastime, but I could never get into the majic, monsters, and wizard stuff.

I think you have it backwards. The very first RPG to be published was Dungeons & Dragons, in 1974. Traveller was the first Science Fiction RPG, in 1977. All others followed later.
